If you’re looking for an easy way to transform and age a plain piece of furniture, you’re going to love today’s post. Because why wait years to get a time-worn piece when you can create your own? I’ve used a variety of distressing methods over the years and never get tired of the results. I really hope this roundup of old-worn finishes inspires you to try these distressing techniques on your painted furniture!
But be forewarned, once you start playing around with distressed finishes, it’s kind of addictive! 😉
Below are 10 favorite Painted Distressed Furniture Makeovers in no particular order. If you’d like to read the full tutorial including colors, the step-by-step paint tutorial, and all the supplies used, I’ve included a link to the original post in the title above each image.
Enjoy the roundup friends!
1. Black Wash Painted Night Stands
These nightstands are distressed using a really simple black wash that leaves the original stain peeking through.
2. Woodubend Painted Dresser
Painted in a custom color, this dresser is distressed by layering glazes to create a worn finish. The vintage hardware is also a plus!
3. Console Table into Two Special Nightstands
Also distressed by layering glazes, these charming nightstands remind me of little sister mermaids or old treasure chests under the sea.
4. Rustic Red Dresser
Lovely dresser painted in Rustic Red, distressed by dry brushing a little bit of dark brown paint onto the appliques.
5. Painted Nightstands with Stencil Texture
White base coat and coffee bean in the distressed areas. Aged look just by light sanding the raised stencil areas.
6. Pumpkin Spice Mini Cabinet
Gorgeous golden orange contrasting the natural wood. Effortlessly distressed using sandpaper.
7. Patina Painted Waterfall Dresser
If you are really into a time-worn vintage look, you can’t miss the patina finish. The weathered look of this patina is just so perfect.
8. 70’s China Cabinet Painted with PINK Wax
Tinting with furniture wax is another way to give your piece an old look, pinkish hue made this cabinet have its gorgeously old-world finish.
9. Layering Chalk Paint Empire Dresser
By choosing the right color and layering paint, you can create depth and rich-blended-jewel tones while looking old-world-distressed.
10. Old World Finish French Provincial Dresser
Creating textures and layering techniques, old world finish is one of my favorite distressed finishes. It reminds me of ancient stone from an architectural ruin!
Bonus – Ornate Wet Distressed Dresser Makeover
This Red Ornate dresser was Wet Distressed giving its details a softer blended look while still aging the piece. Love those intricate patterns!
For all the years I’ve been painting furniture, I’m still in love with creating these old and worn finishes. The vintage look makes me feel that I am traveling through time. It may look to be a lot of work when you see it at first but distressing furniture is a surprisingly forgiving and easy paint technique.
I hope you enjoyed this RoundUp and it’s inspired you to give these worn and distressed paint techniques a try!

Love the painted velvet look!! You make it look easy!!
Denise, I want to thank you for your ideas and instruction. I may not always love the color choices but that is what I love about your post. You have a variety of colors and styles for a variety of people. Knowing the technique allows us to experiment with colors we need for our room. Some bloggers use the same colors and style over and over that gets boring. Thanks again for your inspiration!
Thanks, Janet! 💙 I have to admit, the variety in colors and styles is a little self-serving. I get bored pretty easily…lol.😉
You are an exceptionally talented furniture artist, Denise! I don’t do a lot of furniture makeovers anymore but whenever I’m stumped on distressing a piece, you are my go-to source.
