IF YOU’VE EVER BEEN DISAPPOINTED WITH A SLOPPY STENCIL DESIGN ON YOUR FRESHLY PAINTED PROJECT, YOU’RE GOING TO LOVE TODAY’S LAVENDER FIELDS MAKEOVER!
If you’ve ever been disappointed with a sloppy stencil design on your freshly painted project, you’re going to love today’s makeover! Have you heard of Adhesive Silk Screen Stencils for furniture? Until a few days ago, me neither!
But these are a game changer, my friends! No more paint seeping under the stencil because of an overloaded brush or uneven paint distribution…
But hey, I’m excited and getting ahead of myself. π Here’s what I started with.
I’m calling this my ‘Lavender Fields Secret Garden Makeover’ because it REALLY reminds me of the 100-year-old classic – The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. This was my Mum’s favorite book when she was a little girl. So, when I started reading books, she bought me my very own copy. I thought the story was sweet but I was more in love with the cover and illustrations. I guess I was a wannabe ar’tee’st even back then. π
Here’s the after… what do you think… Secret Garden worthy?

SILK SCREEN STENCILS::
Before I get into the How-To’s, a big thank you to ReDesign With Prima for providing the supplies for this project. Sometimes I have things sent to me that I’ve never even heard of – things I wouldn’t otherwise try. I feel super blessed and grateful I get to test new products and share them with YOU!
Here’s the Lavender Field Furniture Transfer along with the Silk Screen Stencil.
It’ also came with Icing Paste and an applicator. The applicator comes in a package with two sizes and the Icing Paste comes in a variety of finishes. I used the Gold to tie in with the gold in the furniture transfer.
To apply, I centered it on a drawer and it adheres really nicely. Then I took some Icing Paste and used the applicator to slide it on.
Once I covered the entire design, I pulled up the adhesive silk screen stencil and voila… crisp clean design! NO bleedthrough or uneven paint distribution.
To tie in the pattern and look to the rest of my vintage buffet, I whitewashed over the stencils and then burnished with a putty knife and distressed with sandpaper.
Here’s the finished look.
I hope you liked today’s makeover and as always, thanks for joining me… it means a lot. x
You may have noticed the last two weeks I’ve been publishing on a Tuesday. I’m going to try this for a while. Publishing on Monday mornings has been consuming my weekends with work. I miss spending time with my family and friends. I’m doing my best to find a balance… as I’m sure many of you are.
That said, I’d love to hear your thoughts on this new schedule and hope it’s convenient for you too. π
LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK OF THIS LAVENDER FIELD BUFFET MAKEOVER… OR FEEL FREE TO ASK ANY QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE… I ALWAYS LOVE HEARING FROM YOU.
Happy furniture painting my friends!

Hi,
I am in love with this. I can’t seem to find the lavender transfer, do you know where I can find it?
Denise says
Thank you! I found the lavender fields transfer selling here Racheal.
Racheal says
Thanks Denise. Unfortunately it only gives me an ERROR when I click on your suggestion. If you ever find it again please let me know. I’m just crazy about that transfer.
Denise says
Okay, will do Racheal. π
Denise Hardy says
Hi Denise – this is the first time I have seen your website and love what I have seen on it. Hence why I have joined in to receive your ‘Newsletters’ today and will look forward to receiving them π
This is an absolutely stunning piece of furniture you have created and love the thought of using a Silk Screen Stencil and the transfers. My problem is I live in Spain and it is very difficult to find these sorts of items and usually, if they come from America I either have a job finding them or if I find what I like – most places don’t deliver to Spain.:( or, if they do – they charge mega bucks. Anyway, needless to say, I will try to find them and see if I can get a delivery to Spain. Happy Painting
Denise says
Hi Denise and WELCOME! So happy you’ve found the #siblog! I really hope you can find similar products to create with but if not, there are a few ways around it. I created my own diy stencil here (and many patterns can be downloaded online so long as it’s for your personal use) and decorative napkins can be substituted for transfers. Just a few idea cuz my brains always thinking of new ways to do things. Hope to chat again soon. π
Jasmin says

Thanks Debra! XO π
Tracy says
Love how you randomly placed the flowers on both sides to avoid a contrived look.. You gave this piece such a softly faded, ethereal feel.. I can picture it in a Claude Monet painting or in his garden holding all his painting tools as he sat creating his gardens… This one really needs a before picture to even fathom how it started out..
Denise says
aaaahhhhh, in a Claude Monet garden holding his brushes and paint… ohhhh yaaaaa… that’s even BETTER than the Secret Garden Children’s Classic! LOL π
Janie says
Denise,
This piece is beautiful. A true piece of art.
Is the silk screen stencil a one time use?
Denise says
Thank Janie! On the package, it states these silk screen stencils can be used numerous times. For this project, tt adhered to the 3rd drawer just as well as it adhered to the 1st drawer… but I guess time will tell how many projects it will actually be used on. That said, for a $7 investment, even if it lasted for a few makeovers I’d be super happy. π
Monique says
Hi Denise. Another gorgeous project. I also loved the book βThe Secret Gardenβ when I was a young girl, and I agree wholeheartedly: This buffet reminds me of it. Absolutely stunning. And any day you decide to blog is fine by me. Iβm all for finding work/life balance:)
Denise says
Thank Monique!!! π And ya, I don’t know why I couldn’t get that book off my mind while working on this but whatever inspires me… I run with it…lol. π
DONNA KETZ says
Oh, Denise I have one question; after applying the stencil do you lightly sand it? And do you top coat seal at as well? Ok, two questions.π.BTW Tuesday’s work for me! Any day you blog is perfect! Can’t get over how beautiful this is!
Denise says
Thanks for chiming in on the blogging day Donna… appreciate it! And yes, I did whitewash/sand/burnish the stencil after I applied it and it was dry — but you don’t have to! The silk screen stencil created such precise gorgeous crisp lines and evenly distributed the paste… the stencil looked flawless! So you definitely could leave as is if that is the look you’re after. And yes, I did topcoat with wax but I’m not 100% sure if this icing paste requires topcoat or not?? When I go back down to my studio I’ll see if it says on the package and then get back to you. π
DONNA KETZ says
Ty Denise! Oops, I screwed up! Meant to ask you if you sanded and waxed the TRANSFER as well!π³
Denise says
lol…n/p…YES! I did the exact same distressing technique and topcoat to the stencil AND floral transfer… the only difference was I didn’t whitewash the transfer. π
Nicki says
You’re a true artist and you inspire and amaze me with every piece you do. This is beyond beautiful, Denise. It’s a work of art! And whatever day you decide to share your creations I’m always eager to click through!
Denise says
Thanks so much, Nicki! This put a big smile on my face. π
nelda parks says
You do beautiful work. I am going to paint my baby grand I was thinking of using chalk paint. Do you have any suggestions on what kind of paint to use?
Thank you
Denise says
Hi Nelda… thank you! This is a loaded question because there are SO many brands of chalk/mineral paint that will work nicely on your baby grand. I’ve used Annie Sloan which is wonderful but a little pricey. Fusion, Bluestone House are a few of my other favs and lately I’ve been using a TON of Dixie Belle because they offer amazing value and extensive color pallet. Hope this helps. π
Kimberly O'Donoghue says
Always read your blog posts whenever they come in Iβm all about balance and a slower pace of life good for you! Love the dresser. Keep up the good work and the inspiration you always send
Denise says
Thanks Kimberly! Ya, I’m looking forward to having a more balanced weekend… and couldn’t agree more with the slower pace. Hugs π
John says
nice project, me and my girlfriend are just getting into transfer and everything else. you said supplies were given to you to try out. what do you think a ballpark number is for the supplies you used in this project
Denise says
Hi John! The Lavender Fields transfer retails for $30, the stencil for $7 and the paste for $12. I’ve linked to a few under the “Source List” but I couldn’t find the silicone applicators. I would imagine they are only a few dollars tho. π
Bev says
Denise, I am speechless at the beauty of this piece! I studied design in college, along with other things, but, I’ve never seen anything like this. It’s difficult to put into words, but, something of your beautiful spirit comes out in your designs. So uplifting! I searched all over your site, but haven’t yet seen a demonstration of applying the transfers. Can you direct me to this? Thank you again for sharing your talent with us.
Denise says
Bev, you’ve touched my heart – THANK YOU! I can’t tell you how much this means to me. π Here is a tutorial on How To Apply Furniture Transfers. They’re super easy, fun, and make a huge statement on anything you use them on. π
Jackie Cooley says
It’s beautiful; love the lavendar!
Denise says
Thanks Jackie!! π
Laura R says
Hi Denise, I love your Lavender Fields Buffet. Do you have a tutorial on the background paint technique and products used?
Denise says
Thanks Laura! The colors/products used can be found under the Source List and the painting technique was similar to this Blending and Layering Technique here. Hope this helps. π
Carole Atkins says
Just beautiful Denise!
Denise says
Thanks my friend. Hope you’re staying warm and thanks so much for the FB share! xo
Cheryl Atkinson says
More questions, sorry. What was the creative mix to make the lavender, if you don’t mind me asking. Are all the flowers from the stencil?
Denise says
All the flowers are from the Lavender Fields Transfer and the flowers on the 3 drawer tops are from the silk screen stencil. As for the custom mix of lavender, I wish I could share the colors I used but I wasn’t the one that mixed them. I had Jules here for a day, and she mixed a few custom paint colors for me.
Cheryl Atkinson says
Oh Denise. This is the most beautiful piece i have ever seen and let me tell you girlfriend, i follow everyone. I am awestruck. So once the gold past dried , how did you do the whitewash? I wish i was half as talentet as you are. I wish you were on you tube so i could watch and learn. I am move of a visual learner. Heavenly!!
Denise says
Thanks so much Cheryl! That means so much to me!!! Once the gold icing paste dried, I took a damp brush with a little Fluff on the end of the bristles and dragged it across the stenciled design… nothing fancy – believe me. There were a few spots where the Fluff was slightly heavy so I took a shop cloth and ‘washed’ it off. Then sanded and burnished with the putty knife. With these types of paint techniques, I feel the less perfect the better… makes it look more ‘vintage’ authentic. π
Gail Craven says
Wow! Denise what ever day you choose to send your emails is a special day!
Denise says
Oh, thank YOU!!!! Gail, I appreciate that and thanks for chiming in. XOXOX
Marie says
WOW! Absolutely beautiful!! I am going to re-do my night stand and an old trunk my Dad made for me when I was little, we have been going through everything and getting rid of a bunch of stuff. My first time “upcycling” some furniture was right before Christmas and I LOVED IT! I do a lot of photography and paint my photos, but was always afraid I would ruin furniture.. I finally took the plunge! Thanks to YOU and few others! Your work is so beautiful and inspirational! I love this, it looks absolutely gorgeous! And I like that the stencils seem more sturdy – if that makes sense? I really wanted to try stencils but was afraid of messing up, I have MS, Lupus & Fibromyalgia so sometimes it makes it a little harder to work especially with stencils, but these seem like a great solution!
I love how you did the ombre color from a light to dark, I really love that! The design is not to bright, but faded so to look worn in, and the detail at the bottom, I have to say, this is one of my favorite pieces! Especially the colors! Thank you so much for sharing this, such an inspiration! Beautiful job!!
Denise says
Thanks so much, Marie! And what a sweet idea to redo the old trunk and nightstand your Dad made for you. Love it! And ya, I’m fairly experienced when it comes to stenciling but I found these adhesive silkscreen stencils really easy to work with. π
Elizabeth M McLean says
Wow, Denise. Really gorgeous. I don’t use stencils much for the overflow reason, even with spray adhesive. What a great idea. Thanks!
Denise says
Thanks so much, Elizabeth! π
Carol says
Wow! I canβt believ I found you. I love your projects. Iβm too old to do furniture like I used to but am living
Vicariously through you. Thank you.
Denise says
So glad you found the #siblog Carol… WELCOME! Visit as often as you like to say “hi” …. or feel free to chime in with some tips! …I love learning. π
Marie says
Wow, the makeover you gave this buffet is beyond what I expected. Absolutely stunning!
Denise says
Thanks Marie! I have to say the floral transfer and silk stencil were the heroes of this makeover! π
DONNA KETZ says
Stunning!π
Denise says
Thanks Donna! xo
Jan says
Your work is amazing! I love this piece. I admire your creativity and vision.
Denise says
Much appreciated Jan… thank you! π
Elle says
This is beautiful. The colors you decided to use on the stencils are just right.
Your new schedule with Tuesday posts is great!
Denise says
My goddaughter Jules spent a day painting with me a while back and decided to get experimental and mix a few ‘custom’ colors. It just so happened this Lavender Field Transfer matched the lavender custom mix almost perfectly! And thanks for chiming in on the new publishing day Elle! I really appreciate the input. xo
Kim says
This is gorgeous! I always look forward to seeing pictures of your work no matter when you publish them!
Denise says
Thanks so much Kim! XOXO π
