Happy Tuesday friends! I hope all is well and your week is off to a great start. It’s been a busy few weeks here, so it’s nice to finally sit down and connect.
Along with finishing up some custom pieces and enjoying the last of summer (can you believe it’s already mid August?!) I took time over the weekend to update this 80’s Pine Headboard in Annie Sloan’s French Linen. (As you look through the pics, see if you can spot anything different about this headboard… and I’ll fill you in on a little secret at the end of this post!) You may remember I used French Linen on this buffet here. Just love this french linen greige. I love it so much, I still haven’t listed the buffet for sale because I’m sure the perfect spot in my home will eventually reveal itself.
The back story on this headboard – I salvaged it from one of my sister’s neighbours – big surprise right? They were super happy someone {me!} was taking it. It’s a solid heavy pine, has really nice shape, but that not-so-attractive 80’s orange stain. MMM raised the headboard to sit taller on the bed by attaching two solid wood columns you see at the base. I had every intent on painting it right away, but restyling the bedroom was put on hold and 5 years have passed.
Soooo…I’m thrilled to have f.i.n.a.l.l.y started the master bedroom makeover! This salvaged headboard paired with new bedding is long overdue. So is getting rid of the ‘old-lady’ wallpaper from the previous homeowners. {Although I admit, I have warm fuzzy feelings about anything floral and old-lady-ish – hence the cross stitch you see on the wall in the previous before pic… and hence me using the word ‘hence’.}

The walls have one coat of prime but aren’t painted yet. Ooops, correction. PART of the walls have one coat of prime. My left shoulder starting bothering me so I had to call it a day. Since we’re on the topic, a BIG thank you for all your kindness and great advice on FB regarding my frozen shoulder! I’m seeing a physiotherapist 2x per week and it seems to be improving. I have more range of motion and slightly less pain – so definitely a step in the right direction. Everything takes me A LOT longer to do, but I’m SO GRATEFUL I can still work. It’s recommended to keep it in motion. Yaaaay!

New windows, lighting, white washed walls, including brick or shiplap (haven’t decided yet – any thoughts?) and white painted floor are all on my wish list. I’m guessing some of the items on my list may take a little longer than others, but in the meantime, I have enough projects in this one room to keep my busy for a while.
And here’s a few close up of the after. I’m thrilled with the Annie Sloan French Linen! Once the walls are painted a beautiful crisp white, the contrast is going to look amazing.
So, now to let you in on my little secret. Did you noticed anything different about this headboard? What you see is actually the BACK of the headboard. When MMM installed it, I wanted a more rustic look with natural knots, nooks and character. When we configured it to the bed frame, we turned the back of the headboard face forward. The back had all the interesting knots and character of the wood right down to the screws and wood scars, which for me, is a much more interesting rustic look. We also moved the brass appliqué – and voila! The back is now the front! It has a lot of natural character that adds interest even through the painted French Linen.
Next on my list – paint and restyle the night table. It’s also a salvaged find and so old, I can’t even remember where I found this one. Anyway, be sure to check back soon because I’m going to pretty-her-up so she looks spectacular beside the bed.
I’m LOVING my new bed and headboard. . . what do you think? A hot cup of tea and a good book in this cozy retreat is calling my name right now! :))
Happy Painting and have a great week!
Denise xo
Hey!! Recently scored an odd head & foot board. Currently wood coloring would love to use the same fresh linen paint as featured here. My question is their a video to this makeover, I not how did you get the wood to show on the edges?
Hi Sheila! I don’t have a video for this particular piece but sanding back so the wood shows is very easy. You can wipe back the chalk paint with a damp cloth once it’s freshly dried or sand it back lightly with a 220 or 320 grit sandpaper. π
I am doing a headboard makeover and this came up on my Pinterest. I love the color. Iβm using AS Old White. What shocked me is that Iβve been diagnosed with frozen shoulder too! Itβs awful! Since your post was a few years ago, Iβm curious about how your shoulder is doing. My doctor told me it could last up to 2 years! Yikes!
Oh dear Sabrina…ya it’s awful and painful! I was ‘lucky’ in that it happened in my left shoulder because I’m right-handed. I couldn’t have painted otherwise because my shoulder was so frozen in place I couldn’t move the rest of my arm. The worst of it lasted a good 6 months and then I started having little increments of movement. After a year I was moving it but it I still couldn’t put it behind my back as I use to for example undoing my bra etc… that took about a year and a half. That said everyone is different and your healing could be much faster. Because I never want to go through that again, I’ve added arm stretches into my morning exercise routine. So far so good. So hang in there Sabrina. I’m wishing you a speedy recovery. XOXO
Since I see all of the comments are from 2017, can I assume the job was completed? Would love to see this with the white walls and all the pretties in place. Love that French linen and the headboard was an amazing score. I scored a similar one that my son got for me while doing an old ladies clean out. He sent a pic and asked me if I wanted it. I said of course I do. Well went to pick it up from him last weekend and it wouldnβt fit in the vehicle I have now. I didnβt think the bed was that big and we just traded our truck in for my car. So now he has to bring it down to me when he can get his FILβs truck and has the time. I think this piece will also look nice in this color. We shall see. Love your work over and over and over again!
Love the headboard I have a very similar project and like to know how you raised the headboard, the pieces you used, I am unfamiliar with the piece you used in the description
Hi Denise,
Great results on the makeover. Top Notch! Regarding the exposed brick vs. shiplap decision, I personally vote for brick. It seems like everyone is doing shiplap these days and brick would provide such a wonderful textural contrast. Just my two cents worth Denise! (actually a nickel since we don’t use pennies here in Canada anymore LOL !!!!)
Hope your shoulder feels better soon.
Blessings,
Nancy Boreham
A vote for brick – well worth the nickle! π And thanks for the giggle. Whenever Andrea and I are shopping in the states and chitchat with cashiers – we sometimes mention we have no pennies here in Canada – they are always shocked!…lol
Absolutely gorgeous bedhead BUT all your hard work is being covered with pillows. If you dropped them just a tad then your bedhead would be shown off in all its glory. Hope you don’t see this as a criticism. Best wishes and love your blog. – Australia
Hi Suzanne! I know, I was just hoping nobody would notice. After I took the pics and input them, I thought the same thing. It would have been nice if the pillows were a little lower and my vantage point a little higher. Next time. π
Great way to repurpose a bed that probably would have ended up in a landfill! I have been experimenting with chalk paint and love it!!!! I had frozen shoulder….and it literally needs to unfreeze in its own time! It took way more time than I wanted it to(6+months!). I did PT,massage and acupuncture to help it along. It all helps! Hang in there and stay busy, that seems to help the most. It will unfreeze!!!!
Ya, it was landfill bound like many of the other pieces of furniture in my home. π Sorry to hear about your shoulder and yes, the PT told me it can take some people up to 1 year – can you believe? I never even heard of this condition until now! Anyway, I’ll take your good advice and keep it moving. I’m also going for the exact same therapy minus the acupuncture … but maybe I should look into that too.
Looks gorgeous! Can’t wait to see what you do with the nightstand….
thanks Marcia… can’t wait to share! Have an amazing day. xo
We installed shiplap on our living room walls. I love the casual, warm and rustic feel it gives the room. We covered a really ugly beam that was already on the room with alder and alder trim as well. Shiplap would be great with your newly done bed!
Hi Calla! I bet your living room looks amazing! I do like that look because like you say, it’s a GREAT way to cover imperfections and it does look warm and casual. I think it would like nice on the wall behind the bed. π
The crisp white walls are going to make such a big difference. I love the new painted headboard and your new bedding. The painted white floors are going to be great for photography. Can’t wait to see it all finished. Hope your shoulder gets better soon, Denise.
Ya, even the white primer looks better than before lol. I’ll have to take this room slow because of my shoulder (dr’s orders) but I’m having fun. It’s a nice little treat to be painting something for me! π
Hi Denise, I have a Salvaged headboard like that one. I want to paint it as well. Yours is beautiful. My husband thinks all wood should be stained brown. We fuss all the time, about it. Of course he won’t look at a single picture, and has no vision,so he doesn’t encourage me to do much of anything, but YOU DO!! Thank you for that. Your Greatest Fan, Denise
Awww thanks DENISE!!!! {big hug!} π … and I think most men like the heavy wood stain look. As I was saying to Sally in a previous comment, MMM wants to install heavy wood beams on the bedroom ceiling. Beams look phenomenal in some spaces – I’m just not sure if thats the look I’m after. So I get it.. it’s decor banter between the sexes… but what would we do without them right! π
I love the bed and the ideas for your beautiful room, but please, please PLEASE don’t paint those gorgeous floors! The wood is so pretty and warm, and full of character. In my ever so humble opinion, painting wood floors ruins the whole effect and value of what you have already done.
I hear ya Joanne! I LOVE painted floors and I LOVE wood floors. What I’m not liking is the orange stain coming through – and because these floors are old and have been refinished a few times, I’m not sure they would take another sanding and stain. Do you follow MMS? She’s recently moved, however her previous home had RAW wood floors. I REALLY like that look I’m just not sure how liveable/practical that would be??
Beautiful! Pinned for future inspiration!
Thanks for pinning Patricia!!! {Hugz}
The bed looks gorgeous!! You do such great work. I love the sloped walls/ceiling in your bedroom. Hence, it’s going to be absolutely charming! HA!
Thanks so much Sally! When I bought this 1.5 story, ‘Hence’ really attracted me too. π The slope adds interest for sure. MMM keeps suggesting big wood beams on the ceiling which would be quite a statement.
Beautiful work as always Denise. I never thought of turning a headboard to the “wrong” side for a different look. Brilliant. And, I love the way you styled your bed.
Hi Monique! π Thank you so much. xo
Wowzer, love it! What a great match for duvet rouched cover & paint. I think you should name your bed “Hence” LOL.
LOL… I like it Tracy! Hence it is. π
Wow….that came out very nice. Classy look. Nice work!
thanks so much Ray π
