A STEP BY STEP SALVAGED VANITY MAKEOVER WITH THE PERFECT WATER-REPELLENT TOPCOAT!

Hi creative friends, thanks for joining me on one of my fav days of the month – Furniture Fixer Upper Day!

I couldn’t be more thrilled with today’s makeover and it was inspired by Dixie Belle’s #aroundthehome Fall Campaign! I’m sharing the step by step transformation on this salvaged curb-shopped bathroom vanity.  It’s going to look perfect in my spare bathroom.

Here’s what I started with. This solid wood vanity with mirror inset.

I'm sharing how I top-coated with the B*E*S*T topcoat for high traffic furniture.   I found this vanity roadside Happy Thursday! Today I'm sharing this Salvaged Bathroom Vanity Makeover +  This includes pieces that might encounter drips, spills or endless cleaning.... like a bathroom vanity top! This vanity is going in my spare bathroom so I can't wait to here what YOU think...

Salvaged Bathroom Vanity Makeover Step by Step

BATHROOM VANITY MAKEOVER

STEP 1:: Clean 

I started by giving this piece a super good cleaning with TSP or White Lightening. To be honest, I don’t remember which one I mixed in this spray bottle but same-same.

STEP 2:: Sand

I wanted a more modern bleached out wood so I sanded the old finish down to raw wood using this trusty orbital sander. I have no idea what type of wood this is, but I love it.

Once the orbital sander with 80 grit removed the old finish, I hand sanded working my way up to a 220 grit sanding sponge.

STEP 3:: White Wax

I vacuumed off the dust and applied this White Wax to lighten up the wood even further. Working in section, I used my waxing brush to brush on the wax and a shop cloth to wipe it off.  If you don’t have a waxing brush, using a shop towel or lint-free cloth to apply the wax works just as well.

The white wax makes a HUGE difference!

TIP:: Dixie Belle Wax is a WATER-BASED so it can be used under their waterbased topcoats. The key is to make sure the wax is 100% dry before applying your topcoat.

STEP 4:: Seal and Protect

For the topcoat, I sprayed three coats of my go-to sealer. I like using this Gator Hide for high traffic items. And because it’s water repellant, it will be heavy-duty enough for this wood vanity top. I shared an example of how it repels the water here…

STEP 5:: Assemble Sink/Faucet

I ordered a few faucets and sinks from Amazon and loved this combo. Right now they are both ‘placed’ on top of the vanity so I can take pics but once I start working on the bathroom,  MMM will properly install everything.

  6. Lovely, and just my style. The sink and faucet are the perfect finishing touches. Curious though, did you spray the door or just leave it waxed. I ask as you did not mention taking the glass out. Thank you..

    • thanks, Barb! And you’re right, I should have mentioned… 🙂 I removed the door to sand. The body was sprayed and on the door/lattice I used a sponge to apply the Gator Hide. 🙂

  7. Denise, it was a really good save! If it were mine I would lose the mirror and cut plexi glass to fit on the outside of the door. Way too hard to keep it clean as-is.
    Are those feet chunks of wood as in branches? If so, how cool is that! The whole sink is so cute.

    • Thanks Mary! Mirror is harder to keep clean for sure but I love the look of it on this piece. I’m not a fan of taking pics with anything with a mirror tho… it’s always a bit of a challenge to get a reflection free ‘clean pic’! As for the feet, they are big chunks of wood but I don’t know what kind of wood. They do have a lot of character though! 🙂

  8. I Love it Denise!!!! The feet also make such a difference. Did you make those? They look round but the extra boards in your before picture look square. Insight please?

    Also, you say the water-based wax can be used under their water-based top-coats. Is Gator Hide a Dixie Belle product? Or did you seal the wax with a Dixie Belle topcoat and then the three coats of Gator Hide?

    You can tell I love this, totally dissecting so I can do something similar.

    • Thanks Diane! 🙂 I used the original feet that I found with this vanity. I sanded them, waxed, and top coated them like the rest of the piece. And yes! Gator Hide is a Dixie Belle product that CAN be used over their wax. You can also use other DB Clearcoats and then apply the Gator Hide over top for extra durability. 🙂

  10. Perfect solution for a small bath! The wood looks like oak in the photos but I can’t be certain without seeing it in person. I’m also enjoying the more natural look of the weathered wood using colored wax. Good luck with the rest of the bathroom!

    • Thanks, Laurie! Even after all these years, I find it challenging to recognize some wood. I pretty much have walnut, mahogany, teak and pine down but everything else is guesswork…lol.

  15. Hi Denise. Wow!!! I love your “new” bathroom vanity. How creative, cute, and simply beautiful. The whitewax finish, glass bowl sink, and dark faucet are stunning. Your closet bathroom sounds adorable and I’m sure this will be a perfect addition.
