Are you a fan of black and white furniture? It’s a striking look and may feel intimidating to try but it’s easier to pull off than you might think. Today I’m sharing 6 Inspiring Black and White DIY Ideas that will help you create your own B&W dramatic furniture makeovers! And I can’t wait to share how one of these DIY ideas turned this Restore piece into a stunning Black and White Floral Dresser!

Here’s the $60 Restore dresser I started with. Not a bad deal really. I noticed thrift store prices are on the rise here in the Toronto area. I’m curious what they are doing in your area?

BLACK AND WHITE FLORAL DRESSER

Here’s how it all came together…

PREP | CLEAN

Started by removing the drawer liners. It was Christmas all over again. I love finding drawer liners because 99% of the time, it indicates clean drawers. The inside of these drawers is meticulous! Once I removed the liners and old hardware, I gave the piece a good vacuuming and then cleaned the inside and out with this furniture cleaner.

PRO TIP – I keep ALL the original hardware I remove from my pieces. You never know when it will be the perfect match for a future furniture makeover!

FILL AND REPAIR

I filled the old hardware holes with Bondo. I have a full tutorial on Bondo For Furniture Repairs. There were also a few repairs needed on the veneer. Peeling veneer on the sides as shown in the first two images. And veneer that was pulling loose on the drawer fronts as seen in the second set of images.

To repair veneer –

I used a putty knife to remove any loose veneer
Then overfilled the area with Bondo
Bondo dries in 10-15min – then I sanded the area smooth

To fix the drawer fronts –

I used wood glue and let gravity drop the glue in the gaps
Then using these wood clamps, I clamped and waited for the glue to dry

SCUFF SAND AND PRIMER

Once my repairs were finished, I quickly scuff-sanded the entire dresser with my orbital sander and a 120 grit sandpaper. Scuff sanding takes all of five minutes and creates a little ‘tooth’ for the primer to adhere to. Once I removed all the dust with a tack cloth, I went ahead and primed with two coats of this B-I-N Shellac-Based Primer.

PAINT WHITE

To get a high contrast between black and white, I picked this pristine white All-In-One paint called Whitecap. I sprayed two coats to get full coverage which used up 3/4 of this 16oz jar. If you don’t have a sprayer, it brushes on and self-levels beautifully as well.

FLORAL TRANSFER

I used this Vintage Floral Transfer from Belles and Whistles line. I know it doesn’t show the black and white florals on the tube, but it does on the back. I had two of these in my inventory so I used two sheets of black and white to get this look, but I have enough left over for an entire makeover.

To adhere the transfer to the top drawer, I used this Rub-On Method. It’s really easy to do. These transfers come with an applicator. You place your design where you want it. Remove the backing and then rub the design on.

TOPCOAT | PROTECTION

This painted dresser doesn’t need any additional topcoat because this SILK All-In-One Paint has a primer and sealer included. To seal and protect the floral transfers I will be using this spray wax. It’s super easy to use and has a totally flat finish.

NEW HARDWARE

I replaced the old hardware with this black hardware – so pretty!

Here are 6 B&W Furniture Ideas for you to create a high-contrast look. I used to think getting this look was all about using a lot of black and white paint, but there are so many other ways to achieve this look!

Use Black and White Transfers to create a Black and White Design
Stencil in Black on a White Painted Dresser
Use Black Hardware on White or White Hardware on Black
Use Black and White Drawer Liners for a Dramatic Surprise
Paint your Dresser in Black and add a White Textured Paper
Use Decoupage or Rice Paper to add some Black and White Elements
