Hi sweet friends! Can you believe it’s December already?! Twenty-two more days and Christmas will be here – wowzee! Today I’m sharing a Christmas Styled Pink Champagne Painted Dresser… a makeover that almost never happened.
When I first saw this mahogany tallboy I kept walking. The work required to patch up all the gouges and scars wasn’t doing it for me. I must have been having a lazy day. Have you ever found something in a thrift store, passed on it for whatever reason, but then couldn’t get it off your mind? That’s a sure sign to detour back and buy it because it’s meant to be yours, right?
I circled back and picked up this dresser for $40. As I said, I must have been having a lazy-brain-day because I don’t know how I missed seeing all this potential the first time around!
Here’s the before…
After some wood fill, prime and spraying a few coats of Pink Champagne here’s the after. What do you think? Are you loving this pink?

PINK CHAMPAGNE PAINTED DRESSER::
Step #1:: Clean – Fill – Sand
I started by giving this dresser a thorough cleaning with TSP, rinsing and then letting it dry. Then I filled all the holes and scratches with this wood filler and then gave this entire dresser a sanding with this sander – which if you do a lot of furniture makeovers – treat yourself because it’s a must-have!
Step #2:: Kill Bleedthrough / Prime
This tallboy dresser is mahogany so bleed-through was guaranteed. I applied two coats of BIN Shellac Primer to cover the bleedthrough stains and then spot-applied it on a few areas that were still showing through.
The best part about BIN is it takes out the guesswork. Once you don’t SEE any more staining coming through this primer, it won’t come through on your paint or topcoat. With other stain blockers, often there’s a little guesswork as to how many coats to apply because there’s no actual visual – like with clear shellac for instance.
Step #3:: Using a Sprayer To Paint
Once it was primed, lightly sanded, and the dust removed with a tack cloth, I had a whole lot of fun spraying this piece with two coats of DB’s Pink Champagne. I start missing my sprayer if I don’t bust it out every once in a while.
If you’ve never tried ‘shooting’ furniture, it’s a fun painting technique that gives a gorgeous flawless finish. Spraying with chalk/mineral paint works really well too. I typically thin my chalky paints by adding about 10-15% water to the paint when spraying my furniture.
Step #4:: Topcoat
After spraying two coats, I gave my piece a light sanding and then top-coated it with Dixie Belle’s Clear Wax.
Step #5:: Spray Hardware
As the finishing touch, I updated the original hardware with soft Gold spray paint.
UPDATE: This Pink Champagne Christmas Dresser landed the FULL back cover of 2020 Country Sampler Magazine!

ps – And before I forget, I’m FINALLY on Instagram now…. better late than never right! If you’re on IG too, I’d love for you to shoot on over and follow me so I can follow you back. π
I donβt know if I saw this the first time around, but it gorgeous! And, itβs a great reminder at what a paint can do all by itself! I hope you are enjoying the season, my friend! XOXO
One color makeovers… the power of paint, I totally agree! Thanks and you too! Hugs XOXO
Love it!!!! WOW!!!
Thank you Michele!π
Lovely!! I have this same dresser and was hoping that you didn’t use all of the handles, as I have 1 that is broken. I also have some pink Champagne that I didn’t use for a different project. I might have to use it on this piece!
I did use all the handles, Beckie.π But if you go online, I’m sure you can find a replacement… you might have to color-match it with metallic wax or paint tho.
I can totally see how this piece ended up on the full magazine page !!!
The staging is picture perfect. π Such a beautiful holiday setting.
And this color ! Sooo soft and elegant. You chose the perfect hardware finish too !
I believe I had this same tall boy as a child. It certainly never looked like this !
Pink is a hard color for me, but this color on this piece makes me keep smiling. π
Thanks for re-sharing. As always, your process details are wonderful.
I hope you have a wonderful Holiday Season.
p
Thanks so much P! It probably WAS the same tallboy, they were so popular, right?! Wishing you a wonderful Holiday Season as well!!! π€
Love it-simple but soft and beautiful!
Thanks Laura! XOXO
It’s gorgeous. The finish is lovely and that shade of pink is perfect!
Thanks so much Lizzy, I appreciate it! XOXO
Just awesome–as usual!
Thank you Caye!π€
I love the work you do Denise. What a dreamy pink!
Thanks Ruth… I love this shade of pink as well!π
Stunning! How did I miss this one? Takes me back to when I was a little girl. π pinned.
thanks so much, Do! π Takes me back as well, I love this soft pink!πΈ
Aw, Pink Champagne is gorgeous! Pink Champagne is what Terry McKay ordered at the bar with Nickie Ferrante in An Affair To Remember! A great unsung Christmas movie!
Congratulations on the getting the back cover, well deserved!
aw, I love this classic movie reference, Gwen! Makes this piece sound even MORE special! hehe Thanks so much! XOXO
Well, maybe pink is not quite my thing. You know how us men are! But getting that lovely piece for $40.00? That is seriously a good bargain. I wish we had thrift shops like that around here! Good hunting!
Thanks, Michael! I’m all about finding these seriously good bargains… it’s half my fun!π
Gorgeous
Thanks Cheryl!
Hi!
I was wondering, can you use any or is there a reason you used clear wax verse any other brand top coat. I have never used chalk paint so I just want to make sure I am doing it right!
Hi Amy! I’ve painted a lot of pieces in different brands of chalk-type paints. You can wax chalk paints. You can seal it with any water-based topcoat. Either or works great. The only thing I don’t recommend is leaving it unsealed. The reason being, chalk paint is very porous and will pick up dirt and stains very easily. Hope this helps.
Hi there. I love this dresser. You did an amazing job. You are very talented! Can I ask what spray paint and colour you used for the hardware? Thanks Tricia
Hi there Tricia! I used this Champagne Mist in Rust-Oleum. π
Hi!
New to this refurb situation! I tried to read through most of the comments but there were so many. I saw you comment about the interior of the drawers. What about the sides? Are they painted pick or left wood? Iβm doing a similar dresser light grey and I want to paint the sides of the drawers for aesthetics but will it stick when pulling in and out? What do you do?
Hi Samantha! These drawers have been left original because they are in great shape. I have painted, stenciled, and used furniture transfers with no issues. If your drawers work well and slide in and out with no problem it shouldn’t make any difference… and it does look lovely!
Beautiful . I’ve been thinking about painting the desk in my craft room this color. The drawer pulls are the same style. I might even do a metallic top coat.
Love your blog.
Cynthia
That would look amazing Cynthia! The gold really plays off this Pink beautifully!
Hi! This is gorgeous! Congratulations on that cover as well. That’s gotta make you proud. You definitely deserve it for sharing all of your wisdom with us.
I have a question about spraying furniture . I bought a sprayer about 2 years ago and it’s still in the box! I just keep picturing me in the backyard spraying the furniture piece, as well as the fence, house, dogs and neighbors trees. Where do you do this?
Thank you!
Kelly
Thanks so much Kelly! Ha, and I can relate! I bought a Kreg Tool 2+ years ago and it’s still in the box. The truth is I’m too intimidated to try it so I’d rather just daydream about the day I do.π As for my spray gun, my entire basement has been transformed into a studio/workspace. I have a designated sanding room and a designated paint room with a large industrial fan to suck out any overspray. If you want to paint outdoors, you can purchase inexpensive spray tents (or make your own) so you don’t spray your dog or neighbor’s trees.hehe
This is gorgeous!! Iβll definitely be following you. I have so many items to paint, but just donβt have time since I wok full time. But will be retiring next year , canβt wait. And great work and thanks for sharing your steps.
Hi Denise! I just stumbled across your work today and it is all so amazing! I’m thinking of painting my dresser that looks about the same size as yours and wanted to know how much paint did you buy? I didn’t want to accidentally buy too much or too little. If you have any advice for someone repainting furniture for the first time I’d appreciate it π
Hi Rida! A 16oz jar should be plenty but everyone has a different style of painting. If you’re worried it won’t be enough, it’s always better to buy a little more and have leftovers than to run out before you finish a project.
Beautiful color and finished piece! Any tips on applying wood putty to curved and sharp edges? Help, please.
Hi Deidra! Here are a few techniques I’ve used to fill in curves and edges. Hope this helps. π
Woah this is gorgeous! That pink is the perfect shade! Love what you did with this piece.
Thanks so much, Maya!
Such a pretty and dainty piece! I totally love it.
Thanks Teri! And thanks for all you do… you guys are amazing! x
Denise, this piece is just lovely. So nice to see a different finish, I am super impressed with the Huskey paint gun finish…….I’m thinkin’ that Dixie Belle needs to add this piece to their Pink champagne display line-up…..it will double-up sales after customers take one look!
Aww, that’s very sweet Ellen, I’m so glad you like it!!!! xo
So sweet,so elegant. Staging is perfect.
Where did you get that floral. Itβs
Stunning. How can I send you a photo
For help!
And yes, I follow you on Instagram
Woohoo for the IG, thanks, Roseann! π … and feel free to email me. The floral on the dresser is a mish-mash I created. I took some Christmas greenery with little pine cones and added in my magnolia flowers from the Magnolia Homes Collection.
That’s a very pretty pink and so nicely staged.
Thanks so much Tracy! π You know I’ve struggled with staging/styling in the past so I really appreciate this. xo
Amazingly beautiful! I was given a dresser just like this unfortunately it had to go into storage. Even if I had kicked out the grandkids I still wouldn’t have had enough room in the car to bring it to North Dakota from California.
Thanks Lorin, and bummer about the piece but I get it. It’s a large tallboy and weighs a TON! Not easy to transport anywhere never mind North Dakota to CA!!!
I have never been a fan of the color pink, until today. Stunning, perfect βwow I want to have that β redo! Thank you. Again , you did not disappoint.
This is a huge compliment Dee, thank you! Hugs.
Great find and color is soft and lovely. I plan to copy that color for my french desk. I have been painting for years and never had any luck with spray paint. Thanks Denise
Hi Ellie! I think this pink champagne color would look magnificent on a french desk… brushed or sprayed!!! Have fun. π
Beautiful! Well done as usual
Thank you Valerie! x
This is a beautiful makeover and I adore the pink you used! Do you find it quicker to spray paint your furniture?
Thanks Nicki! Hmm, good question. I guess the actual painting goes faster once your comfortable using a spray gun. But on a dresser like this, there’s still all the prep… and then there’s the cleanup. Personally, I spray furniture for the look/finish rather than the time factor – but yes, spraying is a little faster. π
Hi Denise, I’m new to your site and I like what you did with the pink dresser, I just painted a flea market dresser and my question is, what do you do with the interior of the dresser, you didn’t show the drawers open thanks John
Hi John and WELCOME! Great question. What I do with the inside of the drawers always depends on the condition of the drawers. In this case, the drawers got a really good cleaning and they look amazing. When the drawers are not looking great, I either sand the insides or paint them… and sometimes it requires both.
What a perfect pink, and what a perfectly professional revamp you’ve achieved on that piece. I love it. I really admire your patience.
Do you suppose that one could achieve a nice finish using a brush, and if so, would it be best to use a sponge brush, or bristle?
I just checked the DB website for retailers in our area (within 50 km of Vancouver) and they say there are none.
Are you a DB retailer ?
Hi Jenny! You can definitely achieve a professional finish using a brush. I do it all the time. π I would suggest using a nice soft bristle brush rather than a sponge brush. I really like this one here. Here are a few tips on how to paint without brush marks that you might find helpful. And no, I’m not a DB retailer but I do know they are gaining more and more retailers in CA so I hope you get one close to you. In the meantime, you can order online. π
Happy Monday Denise. I’m infatuated with the soft pink you used on this dresser. What a beautiful color. I can just imagine it in a little girl’s room or MY dressing room;) I always enjoy seeing how you take an old, scratched, worn-out piece of furniture and turn it into a treasure. Gorgeous (as always)!!!!
Aw, thanks Monique… you’re always so sweet and encouraging! Hugs x And ya, someone on FB also commented it would look great in a nursery or girls room. I think depending on its decor surroundings, this will look amazing in a girls or grown-ups room. π
I love, love, love this dresser! it is GORGEOUS!
Thanks so much Kim! xo
I love this color, Beautiful work! I’ve been looking for a pink color that does not look like pepto-bismal. Does this paint look as nice when brushed painted or does it need to be sprayed to look this pretty?
Thanks Kelly and this paint looks amazing brushed on. If you type in “Dixie Belle Paint” into the search bar on the top right of my blog, you’ll see numerous projects that were brushed on with DB paints.:)
BREATHTAKING! I love that pink it is just gorgeous! You did a beautiful job on that!
Thanks a lot Shirley… I really like this pink too! π
Denise…just wanted to let you know I showed this to my 13 almost 14 year old granddaughter and she was in love. Now she wants me to paint her one just like it! I keep coming back as I just fell in love with the color too and canβt seem to get enough..lol!
Your granddaughter is putting you to work, eh Shirley? LOL π I’ll bet you have fun painting with this Champagne Pink. I find working with it elevates my mood… no joke, it’s a happy color. Have fun!!! π
The paint color is as pretty as the name! Good thing you went back because the results are stunning, Denise.
I’m so glad I went back too! I was definitely having an off day. lol
So pretty! I love the combo of the pink with the gold hardware. And I know exactly what you mean about feeling lazy and passing on something at the thrift store only to go back for it later. I did that recently with a desk. Of course, I still haven’t gotten around to painting mine yet, but I’ll get there … maybe after the holidays!
Thanks Linda! π And I know that desk you almost passed up on is going to be fabulous – can’t wait to see!
So pretty! You did a great job!
Thanks so much Sue! π
