Hi sweet friends! Can you believe it’s December already?! Twenty-two more days and Christmas will be here – wowzee! Today I’m sharing a Christmas Styled Pink Champagne Painted Dresser… a makeover that almost never happened.
When I first saw this mahogany tallboy I kept walking. The work required to patch up all the gouges and scars wasn’t doing it for me. I must have been having a lazy day. Have you ever found something in a thrift store, passed on it for whatever reason, but then couldn’t get it off your mind? That’s a sure sign to detour back and buy it because it’s meant to be yours, right?
I circled back and picked up this dresser for $40. As I said, I must have been having a lazy-brain-day because I don’t know how I missed seeing all this potential the first time around!
Here’s the before…
After some wood fill, prime and spraying a few coats of Pink Champagne here’s the after. What do you think? Are you loving this pink?

PINK CHAMPAGNE PAINTED DRESSER::
Step #1:: Clean – Fill – Sand
I started by giving this dresser a thorough cleaning with TSP, rinsing and then letting it dry. Then I filled all the holes and scratches with this wood filler and then gave this entire dresser a sanding with this sander – which if you do a lot of furniture makeovers – treat yourself because it’s a must-have!
Step #2:: Kill Bleedthrough / Prime
This tallboy dresser is mahogany so bleed-through was guaranteed. I applied two coats of BIN Shellac Primer to cover the bleedthrough stains and then spot-applied it on a few areas that were still showing through.
The best part about BIN is it takes out the guesswork. Once you don’t SEE any more staining coming through this primer, it won’t come through on your paint or topcoat. With other stain blockers, often there’s a little guesswork as to how many coats to apply because there’s no actual visual – like with clear shellac for instance.
Step #3:: Using a Sprayer To Paint
Once it was primed, lightly sanded, and the dust removed with a tack cloth, I had a whole lot of fun spraying this piece with two coats of DB’s Pink Champagne. I start missing my sprayer if I don’t bust it out every once in a while.
If you’ve never tried ‘shooting’ furniture, it’s a fun painting technique that gives a gorgeous flawless finish. Spraying with chalk/mineral paint works really well too. I typically thin my chalky paints by adding about 10-15% water to the paint when spraying my furniture.
Step #4:: Topcoat
After spraying two coats, I gave my piece a light sanding and then top-coated it with Dixie Belle’s Clear Wax.
Step #5:: Spray Hardware
As the finishing touch, I updated the original hardware with soft Gold spray paint.

Lovely!! I have this same dresser and was hoping that you didn’t use all of the handles, as I have 1 that is broken. I also have some pink Champagne that I didn’t use for a different project. I might have to use it on this piece!
I did use all the handles, Beckie.😕 But if you go online, I’m sure you can find a replacement… you might have to color-match it with metallic wax or paint tho.

I was wondering, can you use any or is there a reason you used clear wax verse any other brand top coat. I have never used chalk paint so I just want to make sure I am doing it right!
Hi Amy! I’ve painted a lot of pieces in different brands of chalk-type paints. You can wax chalk paints. You can seal it with any water-based topcoat. Either or works great. The only thing I don’t recommend is leaving it unsealed. The reason being, chalk paint is very porous and will pick up dirt and stains very easily. Hope this helps.

New to this refurb situation! I tried to read through most of the comments but there were so many. I saw you comment about the interior of the drawers. What about the sides? Are they painted pick or left wood? I’m doing a similar dresser light grey and I want to paint the sides of the drawers for aesthetics but will it stick when pulling in and out? What do you do?
Hi Samantha! These drawers have been left original because they are in great shape. I have painted, stenciled, and used furniture transfers with no issues. If your drawers work well and slide in and out with no problem it shouldn’t make any difference… and it does look lovely!
Beautiful . I’ve been thinking about painting the desk in my craft room this color. The drawer pulls are the same style. I might even do a metallic top coat.

I have a question about spraying furniture . I bought a sprayer about 2 years ago and it’s still in the box! I just keep picturing me in the backyard spraying the furniture piece, as well as the fence, house, dogs and neighbors trees. Where do you do this?

Thanks so much Kelly! Ha, and I can relate! I bought a Kreg Tool 2+ years ago and it’s still in the box. The truth is I’m too intimidated to try it so I’d rather just daydream about the day I do.😆 As for my spray gun, my entire basement has been transformed into a studio/workspace. I have a designated sanding room and a designated paint room with a large industrial fan to suck out any overspray. If you want to paint outdoors, you can purchase inexpensive spray tents (or make your own) so you don’t spray your dog or neighbor’s trees.hehe

Hi Rida! A 16oz jar should be plenty but everyone has a different style of painting. If you’re worried it won’t be enough, it’s always better to buy a little more and have leftovers than to run out before you finish a project.

Amazingly beautiful! I was given a dresser just like this unfortunately it had to go into storage. Even if I had kicked out the grandkids I still wouldn’t have had enough room in the car to bring it to North Dakota from California.

Thanks Nicki! Hmm, good question. I guess the actual painting goes faster once your comfortable using a spray gun. But on a dresser like this, there’s still all the prep… and then there’s the cleanup. Personally, I spray furniture for the look/finish rather than the time factor – but yes, spraying is a little faster. 🙂

Hi John and WELCOME! Great question. What I do with the inside of the drawers always depends on the condition of the drawers. In this case, the drawers got a really good cleaning and they look amazing. When the drawers are not looking great, I either sand the insides or paint them… and sometimes it requires both.
What a perfect pink, and what a perfectly professional revamp you’ve achieved on that piece. I love it. I really admire your patience.
Do you suppose that one could achieve a nice finish using a brush, and if so, would it be best to use a sponge brush, or bristle?
I just checked the DB website for retailers in our area (within 50 km of Vancouver) and they say there are none.
Are you a DB retailer ?
Hi Jenny! You can definitely achieve a professional finish using a brush. I do it all the time. 🙂 I would suggest using a nice soft bristle brush rather than a sponge brush. I really like this one here. Here are a few tips on how to paint without brush marks that you might find helpful. And no, I’m not a DB retailer but I do know they are gaining more and more retailers in CA so I hope you get one close to you. In the meantime, you can order online. 🙂

Denise…just wanted to let you know I showed this to my 13 almost 14 year old granddaughter and she was in love. Now she wants me to paint her one just like it! I keep coming back as I just fell in love with the color too and can’t seem to get enough..lol!
