It’s a rain day here in BEAUTIFUL Burlington. I’ve been working on my website and taking photo’s of furniture I’ve recently painted and re-finished.
FYI ~ Did you know Burlington ON was voted the 3rd best city to live in in ALL of Canada!
I’m so lucky to live here. The QEW, 403, 407, GO and VIA all intersect Burlington and I’m super close to Toronto, Niagara and the USA Border. I’m surrounded by Burlington’s Waterfront (Lake Ontario), acres of parkland, the escarpment, festivals galore, arts and culture, and fabulous shopping and restaurants. And yes, the restaurants are very important because cooking is NOT my fav thing to do! I’m like Carrie on Sex in the City…did you see that episode where she attempted to bake a pie?
Speaking of actors, I don’t usually name drop but Burlington’s also been home to the rich and famous. Jim Carrey, Robert Bateman and… wait for this one ladies … Ryan Gosling to name a few.
Another great thing about my city… Burlington and the surrounding area has designated “bulk” days.
Bulk Days are when we can put out large items such as dressers, armoires, dining tables etc. and the city picks them up on a designated day.
This is really convenient if you want to get rid of something, fun and exciting if you want to “acquire” something! I have found so many great curbside finds. When you find a sad old piece bound for the landfill and turn it into something fabulous …well, it’s a really good feeling.
Here’s my latest. A road rescued coffee table make-over. Leave me a comment and let me know what you think. And if you’re ever in this great city, feel free to look me up and I’ll show you around … dinners on you! 😉
Enjoy your day and thanks for reading!

Love the coffee table. What’s the best colour to paint furniture if you’re looking for the French feel??? Thinking of painting a coffee table, an old pine TV cabinet and a chest of drawers all the same colour – all different styles but want some sort of order into my sitting room. Would you use cream, off-white or a gentle grey??? Thanks, great site. regards, Lesley
Denise says
When painting a piece for that “French” or “French Country” look, ANY color can work beautifully Lesley. Right now I’m painting a French Country side board in blue/grey. The French “feel” often comes from the shape of the furniture and the paint technique applied. Having said that, I’m a HUGE fan of whites and creams simply because it’s a classic look.:)

hi Denise. Stumbled upon your site as I was looking into chalk paint at the Painted Bench to refinish a beautiful solid sleigh bed we just purchased very inexpensively. I have always enjoyed repurposing things and find it fun and usually very successful! I am thinking of doing the bed in the old white color and enjoyed your blog on the spray painting episode. Have you ever found it necessary to sand or prime the piece before using the chalk paint? By the way, I live in Oakville!
Denise says
Hi Neighbour!:) 9 out of 10 times no sanding is required Kathy. There has been the odd piece which has a super shiny sheen that I will give a light sanding before applying AS Chalk Paint, but I’ve never primed when using Brand Named Chalk Paint or HMCP. Tip – In my experience, AS usually takes more than 1 or 2 coats for complete coverage… especially if you’re going to use Old White over a dark.
