$10 THRIFT STORE CONSOLE TABLE MAKEOVER | YOUTUBE TUTORIAL
Hi beautiful #sifamily and thanks for joining me on Trash To Treasure Tuesday! If you’re new here every second Tuesday of each month I join four of my super talented blogging friends for a T2T Roundup. I’ve included links to their before’s at the bottom of today’s post. But first, I’m sharing this $10 Thrift Store Console Table Makeover and how you can create your own “makeshift” DIY SurfyPrep Sander for under $15!
Here’s the salvaged console table I started with. It was listed for $20 which is a little much for this compact table but the Restore was having a 50% off day!
Before I get into the how-to details here’s the NEW look! What do you think? Worth $10 now, right!? This table has legs for days and I love the natural wood look!

CLEAN
I cleaned this table with this TSP substitute. and a sponge. I always like to flip my pieces over (whenever possible) so I get all the nooks and crannies underneath my furniture as well.
SANDING | CHEAP SURF PREP ALTERNATIVE!
Once the piece was dry I scuff sanded the entire table using my orbital sander and a 120 grit sandpaper. To remove the finish from these gorgeous long legs, I added this sanding pad to my sander before attaching my 80 grit sandpaper. A lot of you have asked me about Surf Prep. I haven’t tried it and as I’ve mentioned in other posts I’m not sure I want to invest the $600.00+ when my orbital sanders do a SUPER fine job. If I were to invest that kind of money on a sander, I’d be stumped on whether to go with SurfPrep or Festool. If any of you have experience using either or, I’d love to hear your thoughts below!
That said, if you have an orbital sander, you can purchase these velcro sanding pads which make sanding contoured wood a breeze! These work amazing on curved legs as they contours with the shape of the legs as seen below. Without the sanding pad buffer, you’d have to strip the finish off these legs or sand the curves by hand.
To get these legs perfectly sanded in all the corners, I used an oscillating tool with an 80 grit corner sandpaper. Then to smooth out the legs and prep them for stain, I moved up to a 150 grit and then a 220 grit hand sand.
STAINING LEGS
I used this all-natural stain for the legs. It’s a water-based stain and super easy to use.
- I dampen the wood with a wet towel or sponge as a wood conditions
- Apply the Natural Stain to a cloth or applicator
- Rub the stain onto the bare wood
- Wipe the excess stain off with a shop towel or soft lint-free cloth
MASK – PRIME – PAINT
Once the natural stain was dry, I masked off the legs using this painter’s tape and then primed the body of the table. Once my primer had dried, I painted the body of the table in this gorgeous Coffee Bean color.
NEW HARDWARE
The front of the piece was looking a little plain. I originally thought of adding Woodubend but then I found these knobs. They look handpainted and add a little touch of whimsy and create the illusion of a drawer.
TOPCOAT | PROTECTION
Unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to topcoat this before my photoshoot, but I’ll be spraying it with this Satin Clear Coat for a durable finish.
Here’s the finished look!
This would be such a perfect entry table in a compact space!

Pretty! You listed woodubend in the supplies, but I dont see them? I have a sander I like, but I just got a surfprep. I think im going to get the festool exhaust/filtration system. Festool is highly rated, but most say surfprep is superior. I wonder if I got myself into a pattern of buying proprietary supplies with the surfprep. Im hoping now I can take on more projects Id be reluctant to and save time! Xo
Denise says
Ooops! I’ll have to delete the Woodubend. I think I copied and pasted the wrong supply!😲 Festool is VERY highly rated. Nick is a contractor. I had him ask his trades and many of the trades have nothing but good to say about Festool but have never heard of Surf Prep. I think Surf Prep might have really cornered the furniture painting market! Have fun Brittany. I’m sure you’re gorgeous new sander will save you a ton of time!!
Joanne H. says
So pretty! Love the whole look. My go to paint color is often black but want to try coffee bean after seeing this makeover. Thanks so much for the SurfPrep substitute. I definitely need to try that trick.
Denise says
Thanks Joanne! And I think you’ll LOVE Coffee Bean. Looks black – just a little softer and warmer!

Jeannie says
Your table is gorgeous!! And thank you for sharing about the sanding pad!! I kept wondering when they’d start making those for regular sanders. I just can’t see spending the money on those expensive Sanders. So thankful you shared!!
Denise says
I’m so happy you found this helpful Jeannie. And if you give it a try, I’d love to hear your thoughts. I think it’s a game changer!
Sara says
Gorgeous as usual Denise! I was drooling over the SurfPrep and Festool sanders too until I saw the price (I think it’s closer to 1K when you factor in the exchange rate – ouch!). Plus there’s really nothing wrong with my current sander so why let it go to waste?
The last time we did bare legs, I wasn’t too happy with the outcome so I’m definitely going to try your solution on our next piece. Thanks for the brilliant idea!!
Denise says
Thanks Sara, and ya those sanders are super costly but I’ve heard good reviews. I wish I could do a side-by-side test BEFORE I decided to try but unfortunately, I don’t know anyone close by who has one. If you try the sanding pad I’d love to hear how it all works out for you!
Kim Banko says
Definitely worth $10! It’s fabulous and thanks for the sanding pad tip!
Denise says
Right!? I wouldn’t have paid $20 but seeing how it all turned out, for $10 – it’s a winner!🤗
Do Dodson says
I normally steer away from those curvy leg pieces and have been known to cut them off. 😂
But THIS is a master piece. I’d take it in a heartbeat! It’s gorgeous, Denise! Thanks for sharing your work. It’s always inspiring to me.
Denise says
Aww, thank you! I’ve been picking more modern pieces lately as well (or swapping out bottoms and legs) but I’m really pleased with how she turned out as well. Have a super duper day my friend. XOXO

I always try to imagine what you’ll do to a piece before I scroll down for the big reveal. This surprised me, but then your end results usually do! Beautifully done and I love the look of nude the legs. You always inspire me to think outside the box.
Denise says
I’m happy I keep you guessing and you’re inspired, Patti! You’re comment made my day!💜

It’s beautifully done, but the top now looks too small for the long legs.
Denise says
Thanks Pat! And I LOVE her long legs with her slim sleek top! It’s like a person. We are all different shapes and sizes but we are all equally beautiful!😉
susan says
