HOW TO MAKE BEAUTIFUL DIY WOODEN CANDLE HOLDERS FROM OLD SALVAGED CHAIR LEGS. THE BEST PART – YOU CAN DECORATE THESE FOR ANY SEASON OR SPECIAL OCCASION.
I LOVE easy DIY projects that make a HUGE impact! With Valentine’s Day approaching fast, I thought it would be fun to create some romantic DIY Wooden Candle Holders out of salvaged chair legs.
Wait until you see what I used for the decorative candle rings. I’m impressed with me! 😉 This was salvaging and using what I had on hand at it’s best. I’m treating myself to some donuts for thinking up this one!
So, to make these pillar candle holders – any unwanted chair with curvy legs will work and they are easy to find. I see these old dining chairs everywhere. Yard sales, Craigslist and thrift stores sell them really cheap.
I used two styles of chairs and one of them is shown below. Unfortunately, the other chair I used was dismantled for other projects and I don’t have an image but hopefully, these give you a good idea of what to look for.
Look at these curvy legs… I wish mine were this shapely.

These are styled for Valentine’s Day but by swapping out the candle ring, they will make a BIG impression for ANY occasion. They’ll also be great for staging painting furniture so I’m sure I’ll get a lot of use out of them.

- Sponge + Water + Vinegar
- Wood 4×4 Fence Caps
- Terracotta 4″ Plant Saucer
- Contact Cement Glue
- BIN Shellac Primer
- Paint Brushes
- Fluff Chalk Mineral Paint
DIY Wooden Candle Holder::
Step #1:: Clean – Prep and Cut To Size
I gave these chair legs a good cleaning with water and vinegar. I wanted them to be all different heights so I cut some of them down and then filled any remaining holes and cut off dowels.
Step #2:: Assemble Candle Holders
Using 4×4 Wood Fence Caps (Home Depot $2.00 ea) and 4″ Terracotta Plant Saucers (Dollar Store $1 ea) I glued them together using contact cement glue.
Step #3:: Prime & Paint
Once the glue was dry, I primed them with BIN Shellac Primer and then painted them in Fluff.

Step #4:: Decorative Candle Ring
Instead of buying floral decorative candle rings for all five pillar candles, I used clear plastic container tops! Turned upside down – they fit the top perfectly.
Step #5:: Romantic Florals
Inspiration comes from unexpected places. I’ve been watching RuPaul on Netflix and the ‘ladies’ hot glue gun everything… so I busted out my dusty glue gun. Using dollar store florals that I already had on hand, I glued them onto the rim of the plastic container lid to create a romantic candle ring. Donut worthy, right?! 😉
Add in a few real rose buds and greenery to the mix and voila…
I’m pretty smitten with these salvaged candle holders and floral rings. And as far as DIY’s go, you can’t get much easier than this. I’d love to hear what you think of this project! I’m so glad I saved this post! Found some ugly chairs with nice legs and scooped them up to make candle holders but I forgot how you made them 🙁 . Pinterest is the BOMB!! Love it because I would never have found the blog again but since I saved it…I was saved!. I am looking forward to seeing what you make out of the remaining part of the chair…you are so creative and I know it will be amazing! Just a Q, Denise ~ are your candle holders at all top heavy, i.e. if someone bumped into the table top they’re sitting on would they tumble over? Seems like there is more weight on the top with the terra cotta plus the pillar candles…just wondering, thanks ^.^
Hi Suzy! Hmmm, now you’re making me wonder…lol. They haven’t toppled over yet. 😉 The legs and base are a pretty substantial weight so they seem perfectly fine. 🙂
I LOVE this idea! So creative and beautiful. I’m not supposed to burn candles in this rental place (because they make sooty circles on the ceiling) but they would still be beautiful decorations! Since it’s a small project it would be very manageable for me. You have such great ideas; I so enjoy seeing what you come up with and how you explain each step. Kudos, and happy donut eating. Hi Denise. I love your gorgeous candle holders. I can hardly believe they are made from chair legs! So beautiful and feminine. I’ve seen similar ones featured on the show ‘Fixer Upper’ and in my local Pier One store selling for a small fortune. I NEVER would have thought to make candlesticks from old chair legs.
