Hi SI family, thanks for joining me today! I have something a little different for you today. Spring and summer are a BIG deal here in The Greater Toronto Area. Once the weather warms up and everything starts to bloom, I love spending time out in the garden and enjoying the sun. This past week I went shopping for new patio furniture as our long weekend is coming up. The prices are through the roof so I hauled out my old patio dining set. I’m a firm believer in using what you have if/and when you can! I bought new cushions and an outdoor carpet, and create this EASY Painted Chandelier for a FUN pop of color! It’s a really EASY project and these old chandeliers are a dime a dozen at thrift stores and garage sales.
Here’s what I started with. I’ve had this chandelier for years. It is strictly ornamental since I removed all the wiring the first time I used it outdoors, but it has a cute shape.

Every time I look at this chandelier, it makes me smile!

I wasn’t sure if I was going to go for a jute-covered chandelier or a pop of color. I’m happy really I went with color for outdoors. This was such an EASY project that I wasn’t sure if I should share it as a blog post. But it’s made such a BIG impact and adds so much color to my outdoor space, even if it gives a few of you an idea for your space – well worth it! Next week is Victoria Day long weekend and I’m looking forward to spending more time outdoors and showing off this cutie!
Here’s how it all came together…
PREP | CLEAN
This chandelier has been stored in my garage for the last 5 years so it was filthy. For the paint to adhere it needed a really good cleaning. I brought it outside and gave it a good cleaning with the hose. Gidget had fun too!
PAINT
Once the chandelier was dry, Andrea and I sprayed it with a Rust-Oleum Spray Paint in Orange. I used the Univeral one but I’ve used many versions of Rust-Oleum spray paints and they all work well on plastics, metals, and outdoor furniture so I’m sure it will hold up in the elements.
When I use spray paints, I like to spray numerous light coats rather than a few thick coats. If it’s sprayed on too thick, it leads to cracking, bubbling, and drips. When sprayed lightly, it might take a few more coats to get the coverage (this chandelier took 5 coats) but the finish looks so much better!
I used an old sheet as a drop cloth and made sure to spray in the shade. If you spray in the direct sunlight, the paint will dry too quickly. This can lead to an uneven finish or worse, a cracked paint finish.
HANG
Once the last coat was dry, I hung it in the middle of the gazebo. I bought these orange cushions and it ties everything in really nicely. Once all the greenery grows in over this gazebo (I have given up on the fabric covering long ago… it was always fading, ripping, and a hassle to put up and take down.
Here’s the finished look!
I can’t wait for all the greenery to grow over the top and create a gorgeous canopy! I’m also going to buy potted flowers for more color and make something for the middle of the table. I was thinking of a concrete bowl or face to hold flowers? If you have any suggestions I’d love to hear them!
I’m also on the hunt for solar chandelier lights – really small ones. I have strings of solar lights in this gazebo which light it up really nicely, but it might be cute if this chandelier lit up as well.

I love your outdoor seating area and would love to see an update pic after the greenery comes back. This inspires me, but I live in Florida where it gets so hot an outdoor seating area doesn’t get used much. I will think on this and possibly look for an old chandelier to hang in place of wind chimes. It looks so nice outside!

Love, Love, Love. Orange is my favorite and I don’t have anywhere in the house to place. Spray painting is my favorite….when you tire of a color, easily changed. Well dang, Denise. We got rid of our gazebo for the very same reasons you mention. Not once did I think to keep the metal frame without the canvas roof. We’ve got the string lights and an old chandelier so looking at yours, I’m filled with regret about that decision. It looks gorgeous and you know how I’m loving that pop of orange! Ya, the canvas looked great the first year. Second year (even tho we took it down and stored it) it looked dingy and had some holes. I just couldn’t be bothered anymore. Then when Dad got sick I didn’t do anything with my outdoor space for a few years and these green vines started growing over it! Loved the look so I opted to keep it and let the greenery grow wild. Much easier…lol Wishing you a FABULOUS long weekend as well my friend!

It’s easy to add solar lights to this! use the kind you stick in the ground. Pop the top portion off (or saw them off) and e-6000 them to where the light bulbs were!
Love the orange color you picked! It will still look bright and beautiful in the shade!

What a gorgeous seating area! Like something out of a magazine. The orange is so striking. My first thought was, “Why would you paint over the black?” But i love it. I, too, would love to see the setting again once it has greened up.

Sometimes I need a kick in the pants to get started or an ultra creative blog post! I have several old chandeliers in my stash just waiting for me to tackle them. I spend some winter months in Dunedin FL, and they do this there. They take old chandeliers and decorate them with fairie lights and hang them in the trees all year round. I am not sure where it originated. It is fun!

You must have some very fast growing greenery in mind to replace the canvas on the gazebo? Any suggestions?

Love the chandelier. I have one with no wiring and stuck in the garage for a very long time. I’m going to paint it and hang on my enclosed patio.. thanks. Let us know if you are successful in finding solar bulbs. I’ll do the same.
Karen mentioned you can find little solar bulbs at the Dollar Store. I’m going to check it out. But even if I don’t find any that are the right size, I’m okay with this chandelier being decorative. The pop of color really adds something to the outdoor space. Have fun with yours Bonnie! XOXO
