TODAY I’M SHARING A FUN FUCHSIA SUNSET PAINTED DRESSER | BEFORE & AFTER
Hi guys! Who doesn’t love a gorgeous fuchsia sunset, right?! Redesign with Prima sent me this floral transfer with the same name so I busted out my reds, pinks, and oranges. As usual, this vintage dresser took a bit of a turn and turned out maybe a little more rustic glam than sun-settie, but hey, that’s all part of the fun. I can’t wait to hear what you think and I’m providing a step by step on how to get this look.
Today’s also Furniture Fixer Upper day…woohoo! Can I just say – I luv this group of talents ladies. I hope you’re having as much fun checking out their makeovers as I am. I’ll be sharing links to the tutorials at the bottom of today’s post.
So, here’s what I started with. I found this vintage tallboy on Facebook Market Place. This dresser is in great shape but needed a little cosmetic TLC. Here’s the seller’s pic.
Here’s my rustic glam after… What do you think?

FUCHSIA SUNSET DRESSER MAKEOVER 411::
STEP #1:: Clean
I started by giving this piece a super good cleaning with vinegar and water.
STEP #2:: Remove Old Hardware and Fill with Bondo
Unless you’re new to the #siblog, (and for those of you who are new – a BIG WARM WELCOME!) you already know my go-to filler is this Bondo. It does have an odor and the working time is short, but that’s the beauty of it. It dries within 15 minutes and then it’s ready to sand. A REAL time saver not to mention it’s durable as heck!
STEP #3:: Sand down scratches, gouges and old finish.
STEP #4:: Painted a base coat of Coffee Bean and then layer with Barn Red, Florida Orange, and Peony.
Looks a little scary in this first pic, right?! When I do this layering technique on my furniture, it starts off looking really horrible before it gets good.
Tip: Keep those old paintbrushes!
I like to keep all my old paintbrushes for different uses. This old Rustoleum brush with its wonky bristles is used as a blending brush now. I also like using old brushes for wax application.
STEP #5:: Stain top in DB Black Waterbased Stain.
This top was stained in DB’s Black Waterbased Stain. I used the exact same staining method I used in this video including dampening the wood prior to applying the stain. I find using a sponge to dampen the wood first creates a really nice even finish.
STEP #6:: Rubbed on the Fuchsia Sunset furniture transfer with this rub on method here and then sanded and distressed the transfer.
STEP #7:: Stenciled the corners of the drawers.
STEP #8:: Topcoated the body with clear wax and drilled holes for the new hardware.
STEP #9:: I dark waxed the edges of the drawers and sides to create depth. To finish this piece off, the top was sealed with Gator Hide to give it super heavy duty waterproof protection.
Here’s some more ‘pretty’ pics of the end result. I hope you love it as much as I do. π
And now for some FURNITURE FIXER UPPER FUN!
I know you’re going to LOVE what this creative team of girls do. It’s inspiration and techniques six-fold! π

I live this piece! Would you mind explaining I’m ng where you put the orangs and peony. I dont see where the are. Thanks for Shari g
I absolutely love the color and layering you did on the furniture and would like to duplicate it on a small chest I found. It is unfinished and someone used spackle to cover dings and scratches. How can I proceed??? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
Hi Denise. Do you have a source for the stencil you used? I have purchased all the items needed to paint my dresser. I even found the drawer pulls but can’t find the stencil you used which is perfect. This piece is gorgeous, the transformation stunning.
Thanks for any info.
Hi Sharon! For sure, I used this stencil here. π
thanks so much π
My pleasure Sharon! Have fun with your project. π
Hi Denise,
do you have a source for the stencil? I love the whole piece and have ordered the necessary supplies. I even found similar pulls but don’t know the stencil design
Thanks for any info. The before and after is stunning.
I am in awe of your talents. I don’t think I have the nerve to tackle such a large project. Thank you so much for sharing your works of art.
Thank you so much, Marian!:) I didn’t start out tackling large projects though. I started with smaller curb-shopped pieces and made a TON of mistakes…lol. Thanks for stopping by and I hope to chat again soon. xo
Just absolutely Gorgeous!! That color blending on this piece is perfect and with the transfer, even more perfect! Really love what you did!!
I’m so glad you like it Karolyn… much appreciated! π
Love the Transfer and what you’ve created on the dresser – it looks stunning
Thanks, Denise! XO
Denise, this piece is a showstopper. I love the blended colors so much. The transformation is amazing! xo
Thanks so much Jen! xo
Hi Denise. Iβm loving this dresser and the transfer you chose is perfect. I really appreciate your tip on sanding the transfer down after applying it. I think thatβs what makes it blend beautifully with the color. Gorgeous makeover.
Thanks Monique! π Sanding really helps blend the transfer in but if you prefer the transfer design to really pop, no sanding required. It’s pretty amazing that you can get different looks using the exact same transfer!
Beautiful work as always Denise! ~ Nicki
Thanks, Nicki! Hope you’re having a great day. π
Wow!! I love it!
Thank you Melodee!
Really pretty
Thanks Janie!
Beautiful! You did a great job!
Thanks Sue! π
This is absolutely incredible!! Of course, I love everything you do, but WOW!! XOXO
Aw, thanks Christy! It was fun combining the colors and using those beautiful florals!
i though there was a problem adding sealant on top of wax.. Thought wax repelled topcoats? Is this what you usually do? wondering if it will stick over wax. Thanks in advance for helping me out of confusion. and i love this beautiful piece.
Hi Nancy! Super good question! For this dresser, the body is waxed (clear wax then shaded with black wax) and just the top is sealed with Gator Hide. But you’re absolutely right. The rule of thumb is poly won’t properly adhere over wax. I wrote an entire post on Wax Over Poly OR Poly Over Wax. That said, the only brand I know of that made them compatible is the water-based Dixie Belle Products. Their wax is waterbased along with their poly’s and they are compatible. Hope this helps. π
Love this makeover! Thanks again for all your tips and steps to complete a piece similar to yours!
My pleasure and so glad you like it, Jackie! Hope you had a great day. XO
I just love following your journies for the before and afters. This one is particularly special. The level of artistry is extraordinary. And the color you achieved for the backgroud is stunning. I bet that piece flew out of your shop. Some lucky family will enjoy it forever!!
You’re super sweet Susie, thank YOU! And I hope it does go to the right person/family. That’s always the best feeling, isn’t it?! π
You know my red loving self adores this makeover, right? A gorgeous blend of colors and as usual, your dark wax blending is perfection. Love that particular furniture transfer, especially stunning on this tallboy dresser.
I’m loving this furniture transfer too although I wasn’t sure where I was going with it when I first started this piece. The ‘stumpers’ always end up working out in the end though…lol. Thanks for the kindness, my friend. XO
Every time you post something, you top your last redo! This one is just beautiful!
I have a dresser something like this and might have to do something like this!
Thanks Patricia! And so happy it gave you ideas for your dresser. These types of pieces are so much fun to work on. π
I just finished an old cabinet and I tried to find Bondo everywhere.. I was told about this product at a cabinet repair shop. but I couldn’t find it anywhere. Where do you get it.
Hi Jeanie! I buy my Bondo online here. I’ve also bought it at Home Depot and Canadian Tire.
Hi Denise, Thanks for sharing your latest lovely transformation. This is absolutely stunning. I’m usually not a “red” fan but this is gorgeous. I love the new hardware too. Do you have a source for this? It is absolute perfection for this piece. I have a similar bureau I was going to paint black but now I’m not so sure. This beauty may have changed my mind π
Hi Sharon! Thanks so much and this gorgeous hardware is from Hobby Lobby! Just a little tip though – if you’re buying handles from Hobby Lobby, always check the screw distance on EACH handle before making your drill holes. I nearly made a mess with one of my drawers because the hole measurement on 2 of these handles was off!… I do love them tho. π
What a beautiful transformation!
Thanks Susan!
Hi Denise! You know i am your biggest fan and I love this dresser. I am not a fan of the transfer. π This dresser though. You just slap colors on there and make it look so cool. I love the rustic look. I hope someday I am as confident and creative as you are..
Hi Cheryl! The good thing is that there are so many transfers to pick from now you can choose a transfer you are a fan of forgo the transfers all together! I’m so happy you like the rustic glam look! π
Where did you get those pulls?! They are Gorg!!!
Hi Megan! π They are from Hobby Lobby and I agree, they are heavy-duty gorgeous! π
Can you tell me what order you layered the paint for this sunset beauty?
For sure Jeannette! 1. Coffee Bean 2.Barn Red 3.Florida Orange (just in random areas around the bottom and sides) 4. Peony Pink 5. Clear Wax 6. Shaded with Black Wax
Gorgeous!!!!!
Thanks Elizabeth! π
Hi Denise, when I first read ‘Fuchsia Sunset Paint’ I thought ‘ oh no, not fuchsia on this beautiful dresser!’ Boy, was I surprised! It’s gorgeous! I shouldn’t have doubted your choice of colors, you always do such beautiful work. Again, so beautiful and thanks for sharing with us.
I’m guessing your not a fan of fuchsia… π So glad you decided to click through and check it out. And super happy you were surprised Mariah! xo
Great makeover and a great name. As always, your work is all inspiring. I’m looking forward to your next makeover. π
xo, Do
Thanks Do! XO I like the name too! π
When you said fuchsia, I really almost didnβt read the rest of the post. I expected it to be way too bright for me. But your chest is spectacular! I expected a pretty piece for a little girls room, and what you have achieved Is a beautiful color that can work in any scheme, from the most classical on. Beautiful work, and this really reminds me to step out of my box when thinking of color possibilities.
Great work!
Thanks, Shelly! And I totally get what you say “stepping out of the box when thinking of color possibilities” because I have to remind myself to do just that for many of my pieces too! π
I love this piece! What a gorgeous transformation in a color I haven’t tried on furniture.
Thank you Carla! XO
