TODAY I’M SHARING A FUN FUCHSIA SUNSET PAINTED DRESSER | BEFORE & AFTER
Hi guys! Who doesn’t love a gorgeous fuchsia sunset, right?! Redesign with Prima sent me this floral transfer with the same name so I busted out my reds, pinks, and oranges. As usual, this vintage dresser took a bit of a turn and turned out maybe a little more rustic glam than sun-settie, but hey, that’s all part of the fun. I can’t wait to hear what you think and I’m providing a step by step on how to get this look.
Today’s also Furniture Fixer Upper day…woohoo! Can I just say – I luv this group of talents ladies. I hope you’re having as much fun checking out their makeovers as I am. I’ll be sharing links to the tutorials at the bottom of today’s post.
So, here’s what I started with. I found this vintage tallboy on Facebook Market Place. This dresser is in great shape but needed a little cosmetic TLC. Here’s the seller’s pic.

FUCHSIA SUNSET DRESSER MAKEOVER 411::
STEP #1:: Clean
I started by giving this piece a super good cleaning with vinegar and water.
STEP #2:: Remove Old Hardware and Fill with Bondo
Unless you’re new to the #siblog, (and for those of you who are new – a BIG WARM WELCOME!) you already know my go-to filler is this Bondo. It does have an odor and the working time is short, but that’s the beauty of it. It dries within 15 minutes and then it’s ready to sand. A REAL time saver not to mention it’s durable as heck!
STEP #3:: Sand down scratches, gouges and old finish.
STEP #4:: Painted a base coat of Coffee Bean and then layer with Barn Red, Florida Orange, and Peony.
Looks a little scary in this first pic, right?! When I do this layering technique on my furniture, it starts off looking really horrible before it gets good.
Tip: Keep those old paintbrushes!
I like to keep all my old paintbrushes for different uses. This old Rustoleum brush with its wonky bristles is used as a blending brush now. I also like using old brushes for wax application.
STEP #5:: Stain top in DB Black Waterbased Stain.
This top was stained in DB’s Black Waterbased Stain. I used the exact same staining method I used in this video including dampening the wood prior to applying the stain. I find using a sponge to dampen the wood first creates a really nice even finish.
STEP #6:: Rubbed on the Fuchsia Sunset furniture transfer with this rub on method here and then sanded and distressed the transfer.
STEP #7:: Stenciled the corners of the drawers.
STEP #8:: Topcoated the body with clear wax and drilled holes for the new hardware.
STEP #9:: I dark waxed the edges of the drawers and sides to create depth. To finish this piece off, the top was sealed with Gator Hide to give it super heavy duty waterproof protection.

I absolutely love the color and layering you did on the furniture and would like to duplicate it on a small chest I found. It is unfinished and someone used spackle to cover dings and scratches. How can I proceed??? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Denise. I’m loving this dresser and the transfer you chose is perfect. I really appreciate your tip on sanding the transfer down after applying it. I think that’s what makes it blend beautifully with the color. Gorgeous makeover.
Thanks Monique! 🙂 Sanding really helps blend the transfer in but if you prefer the transfer design to really pop, no sanding required. It’s pretty amazing that you can get different looks using the exact same transfer!

i though there was a problem adding sealant on top of wax.. Thought wax repelled topcoats? Is this what you usually do? wondering if it will stick over wax. Thanks in advance for helping me out of confusion. and i love this beautiful piece.
Hi Nancy! Super good question! For this dresser, the body is waxed (clear wax then shaded with black wax) and just the top is sealed with Gator Hide. But you’re absolutely right. The rule of thumb is poly won’t properly adhere over wax. I wrote an entire post on Wax Over Poly OR Poly Over Wax. That said, the only brand I know of that made them compatible is the water-based Dixie Belle Products. Their wax is waterbased along with their poly’s and they are compatible. Hope this helps. 🙂

I just finished an old cabinet and I tried to find Bondo everywhere.. I was told about this product at a cabinet repair shop. but I couldn’t find it anywhere. Where do you get it.

Hi Denise, Thanks for sharing your latest lovely transformation. This is absolutely stunning. I’m usually not a “red” fan but this is gorgeous. I love the new hardware too. Do you have a source for this? It is absolute perfection for this piece. I have a similar bureau I was going to paint black but now I’m not so sure. This beauty may have changed my mind 🙂
Hi Sharon! Thanks so much and this gorgeous hardware is from Hobby Lobby! Just a little tip though – if you’re buying handles from Hobby Lobby, always check the screw distance on EACH handle before making your drill holes. I nearly made a mess with one of my drawers because the hole measurement on 2 of these handles was off!… I do love them tho. 🙂

Hi Denise! You know i am your biggest fan and I love this dresser. I am not a fan of the transfer. 🙁 This dresser though. You just slap colors on there and make it look so cool. I love the rustic look. I hope someday I am as confident and creative as you are..

When you said fuchsia, I really almost didn’t read the rest of the post. I expected it to be way too bright for me. But your chest is spectacular! I expected a pretty piece for a little girls room, and what you have achieved Is a beautiful color that can work in any scheme, from the most classical on. Beautiful work, and this really reminds me to step out of my box when thinking of color possibilities.
