HAMPTON OLIVE ENTRY TABLE AND WHAT TO DO IF YOUR FURNITURE DOESN’T SELL | YOUTUBE VIDEO
Hi sweet friends, thanks for joining me today! I’m still healing my broken foot so today’s post is going out a little later than usual. BUUUT this is the first piece of furniture I’ve painted (actually repainted) since my accident, which makes me sooo happy! Today I’m sharing an entry table that didn’t sell the first time around. I have some tips on how I deal with furniture that doesn’t sell along with this Entry Table’s NEW LOOK in Hampton Olive Green!
Here’s the entry table I started with. You may remember this one. Last year in October it got a gorgeous RED makeover. However, there were no buyers in the first couple of months it was listed so I took it off Facebook Market Place and it’s been sitting lonely in my inventory ever since.
I’m sharing the first makeover of this table at the end of this post so you can compare the two painted versions. I’d love to hear which one YOU prefer!

WHAT DO I DO IF MY FURNITURE DOESN’T SELL
When I first started my furniture painting business, if one of my pieces didn’t sell, I’ll admit I took it personally. Because let’s face it, if you’re an artist of any kind, you put your heart and soul, time and money, sweat and tears into creating one-of-a-kind pieces. We do our best to make something beautiful and we hope others will see and appreciate the beauty in it as well.
When this doesn’t happen, it’s disappointing.
But after 10+ years of selling furniture online, I’ve learned it’s NOT personal. There are several factors that come into play on whether a piece sells or not. Price point, what’s happening in the world (pandemic for example!), the weather or seasons, supply and demand, and location preferences to name a few can all play a factor in how fast a piece of furniture sells. Or play a factor in it not selling at all!
So if one of my pieces doesn’t sell, it’s time to try something different and repaint it! And there’s no shame in redoing a piece. The real shame would be to give up on the piece. And I have to admit it’s fun seeing how many different versions a piece of furniture can have. If you’ve been a follower of the #siblog for the last few years, you may know it’s a Christmas tradition to restyle and makeover this washstand. It’s had four totally different-looking makeovers to date and it’s shocking how it transforms with another color or style!
So if one of your pieces doesn’t sell — here are a few ideas to get it out the door…
- Wait for another season and relist it
- Change the wording in your ad
- Check your competition and do some research in your area
- Offer a delivery option for a fee
- Retake your images and change your staging/styling
- Reprice your piece (higher or lower)
- Repaint and create a new look
I have a full post on How to Price Your Painted Furniture here.
HAMPTON OLIVE ENTRY TABLE
Here’s how this beautiful entry table all came together…
PREP | CLEAN
I started by sanding the existing paint finish. My goal wasn’t to take the entire finish off down to the bare wood. That’s not necessary when repainting furniture. But I did use a medium sanding pad to scuff it up enough to create some ‘tooth’ for the new paint to stick to.
Below is a pic of what it looked like all sanded. I also used a tack cloth to remove all the dust before moving on to the next step.
I didn’t plan to stick my boot in the image but it managed to make an appearance. 😂 I have to admit, this boot is AMAZING! Without it, I don’t know how I’d be getting around!
HAMPTON OLIVE ALL-IN-ONE SILK PAINT
Since the red didn’t sell I decided to go the exact opposite on the color wheel. GREEN! I have this muted Hampton Olive Green in my inventory because I LOVE this color! It can be used more like a neutral and in the right setting can have bohemian boho vibes.
THINNING & STRAINING PAINT
Before I did any spray painting, I thinned my paint with a 10% ratio of water to paint and then strained it. In the Youtube video below I’ll explain (and you’ll see the film I had on my paint jar) why I strained a brand new container of paint! I use paper nylon filters for straining my paint but there are DIY versions as well. Back when I first started painting furniture, I used nylons which worked great. They are a little messier but they get the job done just as well.
SPRAY PAINTING
I painted three coats of Hampton Olive Green. You’ll notice I don’t have a spray booth or paint tent and that’s because I have a designated paint room. Also, my Husky Paint Gun is set up so that I don’t have a lot of overspray so this really helps keep the paint spraying where it should be and not where it shouldn’t!
TOPCOAT
No topcoat is required because this Silk All In One Mineral Paint has the topcoat included! I’ve painted numerous pieces with this paint and they are durable and clean up really nicely once the paint has cured!
Here’s the finished look!
Our leaves are all changing color here in the Greater Toronto Area so Andrea and I took a drive and cut a few branches for styling.
I have to admit it’s a toss-up between Spring and Fall being my favorite times of the year… the Fall colors are AMAZING!

And as promised here’s the first version of this Entry Hall Table.
I can’t wait to hear which version you prefer!

Happy furniture painting friends!

Robin says
Love the green! Do you have a booth somewhere? I also live in Toronto.
Denise says
Hi Robin and thanks neighbour!😉 No booth. But I do sell my furniture restyles on FBM.
Denise G says
I’m a “green” gal! The red is gorgeous but I tend to favor blues and greens! I actually think I may repaid my own entry table this exact color!! It’s currently dark green.
Denise says
I’m with you Denise, I love green as well. And this Hampton Olive is so on trend now. Have fun! 🙂
Marie B says
Both version are gorgeous, Denise, but you know me and my love of all things red! It’s funny how even in the same country, different region’s tastes can be so different. Here in the west my red furniture sells well but my green, not so much. Wishing you much success with this beautiful version!
Denise says
So true Marie and I KNEW you’d pick the red…hehe! 😉 The area makes a HUGE difference! I know some of our colleagues in Texas for instance love bolder colors, transfers, designs etc. I’ve tried that with a few pieces here and as fun as they were to create, no go for selling.
Verda says
Team green, for sure. I loved the red, but green seems to fit better in most decors. And, both are/were gorgeous!
Denise says
Thanks Verda… I agree!🤗
Teresa Cathey says
Hello Denise. I love them both, but the Hampton Olive wins. It’s really pretty. I have a bookshelf I was going to paint with the Hampton Olive, but changed my mind.
Denise says
Thanks Teresa! And I hope you find the perfect color for you bookshelf! 😊
Ann says
Green – it’s gorgeous! Also would look great with a bleached natural top with the green body
Denise says
That would look AMAZING, wouldn’t it!?😃 Thanks Ann!
Barbara says
Green is the winner here!!!! If I lived in Canada, I would buy it.
Denise says
Huge compliment, thanks Barbara! XOXO
Shawna says
Absolutely team Green! Olive is one of our hottest sellers in the store… especially in Fashion!
@mypamperepdlifeseattle
Denise says
Thanks Shawna!
Karen says
I love the olive green. That should sell!
Denise says
Thanks Karen!
Beth says
Love the green! It is such a subtle color, but worth noticing!
Denise says
Thanks Beth! 🙂
Monique says
Hi Denise. I loved the red AND I love the olive green. I suppose the green is more neutral, so I’m guessing that’s what makes it the favorite. I’m sure this version will sell very quickly to a lucky buyer.
Denise says
Thanks Monique! XOXO
Bev says
I fell in love with the first version. Surprised it didn’t sell. I also love the second version. The grn also gives off the affect of being glazed or a wax being put on it. Maybe it’s the different lighting. I’ve been looking for a grn to paint my TV cabinet. Pretty much giving up on finding the shade I like. This grn looks like it would work perfectly. Hopefully it won’t be to much grn. Your work is beautiful. So gifted, what a blessing.
Denise says
Thanks Bev! And the built-in finish/top coat on the Silk All In One Mineral Paint is beautiful. It’s a matt finish yet looks like satin when the light hits it just right. I hope you find the perfect green for your TV cabinet! 🙂
Melissa says
I am partial to green-and this one is lovely-not as yellow-y as some olives. The red table is stunning too, but I would choose the green one.
Denise says
Thanks Melissa! And I agree, this Olive Green is gorgeous!
Laura says
Green looks the best
Denise says
Thanks Laura!
Denise says
Thanks Laura! 🙂
Carol says
Tough choice, loved them both. Both colors are perfect but you are right, the green would likely go with more peoples homes.
Denise says
That’s what I’m hoping for.😊 Thanks Carol!
Cindy says
I like the green best. Second would be the original wood finish. I love painted furniture but am leaning toward the wood finish if it’s in good shape. The second painted version is too flat, no pop of color looking. May have well left it the wood look.
Denise says
TEam green for Cindy! And yes, it was a gorgeous wood table but the top wasn’t in the best shape. I think I might start adding more before pics so you can all see exactly what I’m working with.
Janette says
I love the green, and I really don’t care the colour as a rule, but this table looks so beautiful.
Glad to hear your foot is healing, take care.x
Denise says
Thanks so much Janette! XOXO
Lee says
I am definitely on the green team! Green is so popular right now, so I bet the table will now sell! It’s a beautiful piece! You said you thinned the paint with 10% water. Do you measure 9 ounces of paint and 1 ounce of water using a measuring cup or do you have a faster way to measure a greater quantity of paint? I love the work you do and all the advice you share with us! Thanks so much!
Lee
Denise says
Great question Lee! I eyeball the 10%. I’ve been thinning paint for my paint gun for long enough to know the consistency I need. But yes, when I first started spray painting my furniture I measured it! And thanks for chiming in re colors! XOXO
Mercedes says
Patricia Bell says
I really like the green one the best!
Denise says
Me too, thanks, Patricia! 🙂
Patty says
Love the green!
Denise says
Me as well, thanks Patty! 🙂
Barbara Hanson says
Love them both! The green soothes. The red warms my heart. I think the red wins as skies grey in the beautiful PNW I call home.
Denise says
Yes! I think you nailed it… the green has a more soothing effect. My I’m glad a few of you are voting for the red as well. I would be bummed if no one did…lol 😉 Wishing you some sunshine in the PNW Barb!☀️
Lisa says
I love both colors‼️ The green is beautiful but the red table looks like DB rustic red with glaze in the crevices. Red is my favorite color so I think I will choose that one. Lovely job as ever Denise👍😊
Denise says
Good eye Lisa… it is DB Rustic Red! Thanks for chiming in! 🙂
Michele M. says
Thank table is gorgeous and I absolutely love that color! It is so pretty – and smooth – and I am certain it will sell fast.
Denise says
I hope so. Thanks Michele! XOXO
Marian says
Hi Denise,
When I first saw the new green table, I thought, “Oh, I love this color. This is the best!” Then you played with my mind and showed the other color. That table was exquisite, with the shading and all. Someone should have loved it, with all of its personality. Oh well, I’m sure there will be a home for the green table.
Denise says
Team Red for Marian! TY It was beautiful in red. Here’s hoping the green sells quickly!
Cyndel says
Team Green all the way! It’s gorgeous.
Denise says
Thanks Cyndel!
Susan McConnell says
Green, for sure!!! Great job!!!!
Denise says
Thanks Susan!
Margaret Dignard says
I love the green! I am partial to green. You did a beautiful job. I am also trying to buy silk paint. I had an order made up, but they wouldn’t ship to my post office box. Any suggestions? Thanks, Marg.
Denise says
Hmmm, that’s odd because DB ships worldwide now. I wouldn’t think the P.O Box addy would make a difference but maybe try putting in a physical address and see if that works? Also, they have FABULOUS customer service! I would reach out and ask. They will def find a solution for you!
Nicki says
Both versions are beautiful but I vote for olive green. So elegant!
Denise says
Thanks Nicki!
Tracy says
This one will defo sell. Beautiful result! I’m on team green. Hard pill to swallow but we live & learn. However, if you’re patient, I have sold items after 2-3 years without redoing.
Denise says
Oh, I hope so and I wish I had the space to be that patient. Sometimes I feel like my furniture makeovers are overtaking my living space! I’ve considered renting a storage locker but knowing me, I’d fill the locker and still have overflow in my home.😂
Lori Sawyer says
The green version!
Denise says
Thanks Lori! 🙂
Lisa says
I am in love with the new paint color. It is such a beautiful green. I think it is difficult for people to incorporate red in their homes which is likely why it didn’t sell. I’m sure this olive color will go immediately.
Denise says
I agree but I’ve painted a fair share of red and usually, they sell nicely but I’m not sure what happened with this one…lol. Thanks Lisa
Celia says
This table is beautiful, I think I prefer the green (it’s odd, brown and gray in it) but the red doesn’t look red to me either, what color was that? Either way can’t believe it didn’t sell. I didn’t even know you had an online shop, is it pick up only? Well it’s sad you are so far away but I love your site it’s been so helpful to me.
Denise says
The red is Dixie Belle’s Rustic Red, and I can’t believe it didn’t sell either.😆 As for selling furniture, I’m very lucky in that I have my blog and often even before I get a chance to list my pieces on Facebook Market Place of Kijiji I get inquiries. And yes, it’s local p/u in the Great Toronto Area and I do offer delivery for an additional fee. I’d love to ship to the USA tho. I quoted a shipment for a woman who inquired but the delivery cross border was way more than the cost of my piece. 😐
Christy James says
Oh I feel your pain! I won’t take for granted feeling 100% again any time soon lol. I hope your foot continues to heal quickly! As for the table, I love both renditions, but I have to say I am in love with the green version! It is so sophisticated and elegant! A perfect choice. XOXO
Denise says
Oh I know… I feel the same! And I agree. As much as I loved the red, I’m loving this green even more. I hope it finds a perfect home. XOXO
Sara says
Love them both but green is my favourite colour so it’s the obvious choice for me :). So glad you’re on the mend Denise and able to get back to painting!
Denise says
I’m a lover of all things green as well! And thanks so much Sara… repainting this table made me soooo happy hehe! 🙂
Char says
Olive green, sage green, citrus green – can’t go wrong.
Denise says
I agree 100%! 🙂
Nancy K says
Love the Hampton Olive green Silk Paint! I’m just getting ready to repaint my off-white desk with this so the timing is perfect for me to see this. It looks like you added shading in the details, but you don’t mention that so obviously not. Looks lovely. Hope your foot is healing swiftly – those boots are amazing – much better than crutches.
Denise says
This boot is AMAZING! And no shading was added in the details but it does look like it from the shadows! 🙂 Have fun with the Hampton Olive on your desk… I know it will look fabulous! XOXO
Linda says
Oh green all the way! The table turned out so cool I would probably do a little metallic gold highlights but that’s just me, but really, it’s lovely and what an improvement.
Denise says
Gold highlights would look amazing with this color as well! 🙂
p says
p.s
Doe you have a favorite paint / color to achieve a flat charcoal finish ?
I have a vanity bench with a green tweed upholstered top I’d like to paint.
Thanks in advance… for any suggestions.
Denise says
Hi P! I have a list of my favorite black paints here!
p says
That is a beautiful shade of green. As you said, it does lean as a soft neutral. Is Greege a word ? 🙂
I did like your red version, but guess I do find the ‘greege’ more appealing.
The details in this vintage piece seem more at home in green.
Is it just the paint, or did you add a glaze ?
Thanks for sharing. I may have just the piece for this color !
Sooo glad you recuperating. It must feel wonderful to be getting back (closer) to normal.
Denise says
If greege isn’t a word… it should be! hehe I didn’t add anything other than the paint as the primer and topcoat are included. And if you give this color a try on your piece, have fun with it! I know it will turn out amazing! 🙂 ps – it does feel good… painting this piece made me so happy! 😀
T. Olsen says
I like both of them. Very different but each could fit into rooms with great color schemes.
Denise says
They are so different, right!? Amazing how color changes the entire look. 🙂
Dotte says
They were both nice… however, I prefer the green, more neutral. You did a great job!
Denise says
Thanks Dotte and thanks for chiming in! XOXO
