THIS VINTAGE DRESSER GETS A NEW BLUE VELVET FINISH WITH GOLD ACCENTS | BIRTHDAY GIVEAWAY ALERT!!!
Happy Thursday friends… it’s my Birthday today and I feel blessed to share my special day with you! To help me celebrate I have a surprise for YOU at the end of this post… a generous GIVEAWAY! A HUGE thank you to Dixie Belle Paint Company for sponsoring this post + Giveaway!
It’s also Furniture Fixer Upper day! I’m joining my furniture painting besties and linking to their makeovers below… so be sure to check them out later in the post as well.
Here’s the vintage dresser I started with. All these gorgeous details were just waiting to be brought to life with some gold accents. There was trim missing on the oval and a few missing pieces of veneer, but nothing a fancy velvety paint finish couldn’t cover up.

VINTAGE DRESSER W GOLD ACCENTS
If you follow my IG and FB stories, you may have seen me and my friend, Mara, out furniture shopping last week. I found this gorgeous shapely dresser at the Missions Thrift Store for $67. Prices for used furniture have gone up so this is a fabulous find!
Once I got it into my studio, here’s how it all came together…
PREP
I started by removing all the hardware and giving it a really good cleaning inside and out. Be sure to keep reading to see the SIMPLE gold and glittery transformation of this old hardware!
SAND AND REPAIR
To repair the broken trim on the front oval, I removed what was left using a putty knife and then gave the entire dresser a scuff sanding.
I used this Woodubend trim and glued it on using Titebond Glue. If you’ve never tried these bendable trims, I have a full tutorial including a video here.
PRIME AND PAINT
Because these old vintage dressers tend to show splotches and bleed through, I primed with this BOSS Tinted Gray Primer.
Pro Tip ~ When painting a dark color, a tinted primer is really helpful as it will cut down on the number of coats needed for full coverage.
For my base coat, I used In The Navy. With the help of the tinted primer, I got GREAT coverage with just one coat!
Once my base coat of navy was dry, I gave it a light sanding to knock it down and then added a paint-wash of Antebellum over it.
This wash distressing method is messy but fun. Brush the paint on, then dab it off with a lint-free towel or shop cloth. This removes a little of the wash to reveal the navy base coat underneath.
HOW TO PAINT GOLD ACCENTS
Furniture with gorgeous trim lends itself to gold accenting beautifully. My favorite way to add gold highlights is by using a gilding wax or mousse. Both these methods are easy and inexpensive. A little gold wax or mousse goes a long way and can be brushed on using an artist’s brush or applied with a sponge or your fingertip.
To bring this dresser’s trim to life, I used this water-based Gemstone Mousse in Amber. I would describe this as a rich and highly pigmented copper-gold and the red undertones play off the velvety blue finish perfectly! Unfortunately, due to supply, I don’t think this Gemstone Mousse is still available but for a similar option, these Golden Gilding Waxes work amazing!
- Pick your gold accent color
- Prep your piece by cleaning or painting
- Mix the gold mousse well
- Apply a SMALL amount onto the trim
- Add more for a stronger effect
This gold mousse works amazing to glitz up old hardware as well. Because it’s water-based, it dries within an hour and cures within 24 hours. Take a look at this before and after.
Here’s how it all came together. I’m in love with this dresser. So elegant and gorgeous. I can’t wait to hear what you think!
Doesn’t the gold highlight all these details beautifully? It sparkles when the light hits it just right!
The paint finish on this really reminds me of crushed velvet. I imagine it to feel soft and plush and change shades when running my hands over it. I remember when I was in Kindergarten and Mrs. Buxton my teacher wore her velvet high-heeled shoes. I would play with them while sitting on the floor during storytime. Thinking back she was a great teacher. I mean come on — not minding sweaty little hands all over her shoes — that’s something…lol.

Beautiful love the colors you used. I have the Antebellum Blue can’t wait to try it on a desk I have.
You’re going to love it! 🙂
A gorgeous makeover. On my screen, the colors lean teal and copper, which are a beautiful combo.
Happy 52 Denise- hope it’s a great year for you! The dresser is beautifully transformed, you have such an eye for color, I wouldn’t have thought to put that shade of blue over navy but it’s just stunning. I have the gold gilding wax although I find it needs mineral spirits to soften before use. I’ve never tried the wax over metal hardware because I didn’t think it would adhere but I’m going to give it a go!
Thanks so much Peggi! XOXO
I loved this beautiful piece! You outdid yourself this time! I also love the very clear, concise and creative instructions that you post with all your projects. Thank you for sharing your creativity!
Thank YOu Gayle! XOXO

Thanks my friend! Much appreciated. Hugs XOXO
Love the updated dresser. The gold really makes it pop. I would have never have thought of replacing the trim with the ubend.
I’ve just started to get my brain around a few pieces that I’m going to work on for myself. Funny how when it starts out as a piece to keep in one’s own home, the angst over colors and technique kicks in big time. This dresser is a combo of my colors! So, ✔ing off that bit of indecision and have a piece I’m going to try it on. Amazing and awesome timing! Thanks so much! Happy Birthday to a special lady. Some special people in my life share your birthday day. xo
You’re surrounded by Scorpios are you?🦂 🙂 … we’re a good bunch!🤗 So glad the dresser has given you a few ideas and thanks so much Carol!

absolutely beautiful…love the color combo and the gold was just the right touch needed to complete this lovely piece. You are so talented and thanks for sharing all of your pieces.
Denise as always this dresser is gorgeous. My husband and I have similar dressers that we use as nightstands, one was from the Mission store and then serendipity , another one was found curbside. I refinished them as I wasn’t certain about committing to a colour but now that I have seen this I’m smitten and going to paint them. Thankyou always for the inspiration. Cheers!
Thanks, Catherine and glad it sparked some ideas! I’m sure they are gorgeous refinishes as well. These pieces are gorgeous and finding one curbside – BONUS!
Wow! Just gorgeous!
Beautiful makeover. Might I suggest a scene of some sort painted in the center oval.
Happy Birthday Denise and thank you for the giveaway! Entered and my fingers are crossed!🤞😃 And this blue dresser is incredible!
