Here’s the vintage dresser I started with. All these gorgeous details were just waiting to be brought to life with some gold accents. There was trim missing on the oval and a few missing pieces of veneer, but nothing a fancy velvety paint finish couldn’t cover up.

VINTAGE DRESSER W GOLD ACCENTS

If you follow my IG and FB stories, you may have seen me and my friend, Mara, out furniture shopping last week. I found this gorgeous shapely dresser at the Missions Thrift Store for $67. Prices for used furniture have gone up so this is a fabulous find!

Once I got it into my studio, here’s how it all came together…

PREP 

I started by removing all the hardware and giving it a really good cleaning inside and out. Be sure to keep reading to see the SIMPLE gold and glittery transformation of this old hardware!

Dirty Vintage Hardware

SAND AND REPAIR

To repair the broken trim on the front oval, I removed what was left using a putty knife and then gave the entire dresser a scuff sanding.

I used this Woodubend trim and glued it on using Titebond Glue. If you’ve never tried these bendable trims, I have a full tutorial including a video here.Woodubend Trim on Vintage Dresser

PRIME AND PAINT

Because these old vintage dressers tend to show splotches and bleed through, I primed with this BOSS Tinted Gray Primer.

Pro Tip ~ When painting a dark color, a tinted primer is really helpful as it will cut down on the number of coats needed for full coverage.

For my base coat, I used In The Navy. With the help of the tinted primer, I got GREAT coverage with just one coat!Painting in Bunker Hill Blue

Once my base coat of navy was dry, I gave it a light sanding to knock it down and then added a paint-wash of Antebellum over it.

This wash distressing method is messy but fun.  Brush the paint on, then dab it off with a lint-free towel or shop cloth. This removes a little of the wash to reveal the navy base coat underneath.Applying A Blue Wash to Vintage Dresser

HOW TO PAINT GOLD ACCENTS 

Furniture with gorgeous trim lends itself to gold accenting beautifully. My favorite way to add gold highlights is by using a gilding wax or mousse. Both these methods are easy and inexpensive. A little gold wax or mousse goes a long way and can be brushed on using an artist’s brush or applied with a sponge or your fingertip.

To bring this dresser’s trim to life, I used this water-based Gemstone Mousse in Amber. I would describe this as a rich and highly pigmented copper-gold and the red undertones play off the velvety blue finish perfectly! Unfortunately, due to supply, I don’t think this Gemstone Mousse is still available but for a similar option, these Golden Gilding Waxes work amazing!

  1. Pick your gold accent color
  2. Prep your piece by cleaning or painting
  3. Mix the gold mousse well
  4. Apply a SMALL amount onto the trim
  5. Add more for a stronger effect

This gold mousse works amazing to glitz up old hardware as well. Because it’s water-based, it dries within an hour and cures within 24 hours. Take a look at this before and after.Painting Hardware w Gemstone Mousse

The paint finish on this really reminds me of crushed velvet. I imagine it to feel soft and plush and change shades when running my hands over it. I remember when I was in Kindergarten and Mrs. Buxton my teacher wore her velvet high-heeled shoes.  I would play with them while sitting on the floor during storytime. Thinking back she was a great teacher. I mean come on — not minding sweaty little hands all over her shoes — that’s something…lol.

  3. Indeed, it is a beautiful piece now. The bottom right pull doesn’t match the others – it must be a manufacturer’s defect. Guess you can call it ‘character’!

  8. I recently did a cedar chest with lots of chinoiserie style trim in Annie Sloan Emperor Blue with gold accents, so similar look. I do love the antebellum overwash on yours. Quite gorgeous.

  20. What a gorgeous color combination! Just beautiful. Another great piece – I’m convinced these pieces find you, Denise! :o) I think I’ve only ever tried mousse, but I really liked it – so easy to use and great color pay off.

    • It’s fabulous right?! The mousse is so pigmented. I’ve even seen other artists water it down to liquefy it and it still creates gorgeous coverage!

  21. Gold accents are the best! Great way to add some old world charm I think. My favorite colors to use it with are black and dark gray (though you can’t go wrong with any color as you’ve demonstrated many times before!)

  33. Happy Birthday! The dresser is very pretty. I’ve used Gilding Paste to add gold or silver accents but the Mousse looks perfect for larger areas. I need to explore Woodubend products!
