I’ve painted a lot of furniture for re-sale, family and friends. But this is exciting… I’ve just completed painting 2 pieces for my first “real” client!
Cyndy (“my client”… I love saying that 😉 ) wants to keep this quality furniture in her family yet change it’s appearance to compliment her décor.
These 2 pieces are gorgeous and they were a pleasure to work on.
A beautiful well built mahogany dresser and a charming maple dry sink.

White Shabby Chic but Not Too Shabby
To achieve the Shabby Chic look, the furniture was thoroughly cleaned and then sanded with 150 & 220 grit sandpaper. I primed with 2 coats of Zinsser BIN Shellac Primer and sanded in-between each coat.
Then another 2 coats of enamel paint were applied using a HVLP spray gun with light sanding in-between each coat once again. The paint I used was Sherwin Williams All Surface Enamel in an Eggshell finish. The colour is a beautiful soft neutral white ~ #7010 “White Duck”.
Once the paint was dry, I lightly distressed the 2 pieces by sanding in places the furniture would naturally wear down over time.
I’ll be delivering her furniture early next week and I hope she’s going to be as happy with the results as I am.

Yours is the first blog I have come across that I have wanted to read every single post! You are such an inspiration! How do you choose what type of paint you would use. Couldn’t you have used chalk paint for this without all the priming and sanding?

What a HUUUUGE compliment…thank you SOOOO much!!! 🙂 Yes, you’re absolutely right Shelly, these 2 pieces would have worked beautifully using chalk paint and they wouldn’t have required all the prep. When working with clients, I choose the paint/finish they desire. In the case of my own furniture re-do’s, the shape/size/condition and completed vision help me decide on the technique. I also like trying new techniques just keep things interesting and hopefully learn something new. 🙂

Love the hardware on the dresser…the aqua/turquoise in the “grooves”. How did you get that finish?
Very easy! I used the same chalk paint to paint the hardware and then wiped off the excess. It’s actually the exact same colour as the dresser but it picks up different hues from the hardware.
