A VANITY DRAWER IS UP-CYCLED INTO A PAINTED JEWELRY BOX USING CHALK MINERAL PAINT AND WOODUBEND APPLIQUES
Hi, sweet #sifamily! Today I have an easy DIY to kick off the month and it might just spark some DIY gift-giving ideas!
This is part two of this vintage vanity makeover. I was scratching my head trying to figure out how to upcycle the middle drawer of this vanity and I thought it would be a perfect Painted Jewelry Box!
If you missed the original post on this vintage vanity, here’s what I started with…
And below is the middle drawer I had left-over to repurpose for today’s makeover.
Now it’s a gorgeous painted jewelry box which has two large compartments to hold jewelry and valuables!

HOW TO PAINT A JEWELRY BOX
I started by removing the nails and screws and then giving this piece a super good cleaning with this White Lightning.
To hide the unfinished rough edges, I added WoodUbend Trim. I’ve been using this product a lot lately. It’s so easy to use. These wood appliques glue on with this wood glue and make a HUGE difference in design!!! I heat it up and mold it into the shape of the piece I’m working on. They can be cut to size, sanded, drilled painted, or stained. In the pic below, the bottom is still the rough edge and the top has the WoodUbend trim. Big difference, right?! I have a full WoodUbend how-to tutorial here.
With a craft knife, I cut the square ends to match the existing profile. Then sanded down for a smooth finish.
Once my WoodUbend was all dry, I painted two coats with this Buttercream. A gorgeous creamy white.
To add texture to this flat box, I used Posh Chalk Solly’s Lace Stencil. This is my first time using this large stencil design and I L*U*V it. To create the gorgeous lacey texture with a shimmery pearl effect, I used this Metallic Texture Paste in Pearl. I started spreading it with a plastic putty but found it easier to put a little on my finger and then smooth it over the stencil. It’s more fun hands-on!
Check out how stunning this looks. It gives a raised stencil look with a pearl shimmer. Absolutely gorgeous!
Here’s the finished look. I think it was a great way to upcycle and repurpose this vanity’s middle drawer!

I loved the slap on the painting technique.! I have several old pieces I am going to redo one old Hoosier Cabinet I will be doing like the red dresser you did.
But I wanted to ask your advice about something. Do you think it would be possible to take old Lang calendars and paste them willy nilly on my bathroom wall? I just want to do an accent wall. I said Lang because they are, well what I have and the paper is rather thick and slick.
I also think I could use some other calendars on my old furniture that I have. What do you think? What type of paste would I use?
Your advice will be greatly appreciated as I don’t know who else to ask. My Mother was the Wallpaper Queen passed several years ago she would have been able to tell me if it would work. She would have also asked, “why in the world do you want to paste roosters all over your walls!”!!!

Hi Kimberly! I’m so glad you’ve found the #slapiton technique helpful and your Hoosier Cabinet in red will look amazing in red, I’m sure. 🙂 Also I love the creative Lang Calendars idea. Mod Podge would work well for decoupaging on furniture. As for the accent wall, hmmm I’m not sure but maybe Mod Podge or a wallpaper glue ?? Wishing you happy Holidays as well. XOXO
It’s beautiful. What do you use to heat up the WoodUBend trim pieces? I must try them!
Thanks Lizzy! I use a really inexpensive heat gun I picked up at Walmart. If you don’t have a heat gun, a hairdryer works well. 🙂

I’ve asked this question before but haven’t received an answer. You mentioned one time the paint sprayer you used, but can’t locate your info. When you spray furniture, does the paint sprayer you use need a compressor to operate? Best kind you’ve found….

Thanks, Margie! And yes, this is the Husky Paint Gun I use. I’ve been using it since 2013 and it still works great and yes, it does require a compressor.
Jewelry box is a great idea. I wouldn’t have thought to use Ubend on the ends, or to use the pearl for a lace stencil. Beautiful!

Stunning. I love the lacy top. It’s perfect and adds to the piece. Beautiful color too. I didn’t see the inside. Did I miss it? I’m curious how it looks too. The nightstands turned out gorgeous too.
