INLAWS HALL CONSOLE TABLE GETS UPDATED WITH SAVANNAH MIST CHALK PAINT!
Hi SI family, thanks for joining me today! Today’s post is a family affair. This hall console table belonged to my inlaws. It was originally a long sofa table with a dark factory stained finish.
My brother-in-law Mike and Nick (aka MMM) worked their magic and shortened it up turning it into a more modern hallway table.
It was delivered looking like this. All clean, sanded, and ready for paint. Now that’s service!
Here’s what a little paint and stain can do!
I LOVE this color!! I’m always amazed at how the ‘right’ color can update and transform an entire piece.

HALL TABLE MAKEOVER
My original thought was to paint the body and stain the top. But as in the case of many makeovers — this tabletop led me in a different direction.
Here’s the 411.
I started by adding these Prima Decor Molds to either side of the table front. If you haven’t tried making your own DIY Furniture Molds, I’m sharing a full tutorial here. DIY Molds are cost-effective and super fun and even the smallest mold can make a BIG impact.
Then it was time to prime. I used BIN Shellac based primer to hide all the dark spots and bleedthrough.
Within 30-40 minutes of applying the primer, I lightly sanded with a 220 grit and then started painting.

Here’s where this tabletop wanted to do its own thing.
I started by staining the entire top in White Magic Voodoo Gel stain. There were some noticeable blotches on the top, so I had to resand and then use a darker gray stain — Up in Smoke.
The middle veneer was thinning out in spots and some of the dark spots still weren’t budging. To hide all these flaws, I decided to paint the middle panel to match the body.
I’m really happy with it. The gray stain with wood grain showing through frames the Savannah Mist insert beautifully. It looks fresh and lovely!
Nick mentioned his parents were asking if I worked on this yet. I hope they feel I did their table justice and they like the new look as much as I do!

Love this color combination. I would love to try it. Since you changed directions should I skip the white voodoo stain or does that lighten the grey??
Thanks, Joy and yes, you can skip the White Voodoo Stain altogether. If you’d like the grey to look slightly lighter/more translucent you can dilute it with a little water since it’s a water-based stain. Have fun!

I love how you used the design molds! Those small pieces change the look of the table. They add some faux age to the piece and really individualize it. The paint and the stain work well together. I love it!

Hi Denise, I’m new to your site. I really liked the video on how to paint spindle legs quickly. Very clever:) Love the blue table,. I know I will get many ideas on how to redo furniture. I was wanting to know if Dixie Belle Paint will yellow in time on light colored paints(white, pastels, etc.)? I currently use another polycrylic. but like to try other products.. Thanks Denise:!
Hi Lisa and WELCOME! So glad you’re here and enjoyed the spindle painting videospindle painting video. Light-colored Dixie Belle PaintDixie Belle Paint paints and clear-coats do not yellow over time. That said if the proper prep work is not put into the piece prior to painting and top coating (for instance a stain blockerstain blocker or stain blocking primerstain blocking primer on pieces that are prone to bleedthrough) both can yellow and blotch. Prep is the key to a beautiful paint job regardless of what brand paint you use. 🙂

This color is transformative and so beautifully done.
The result is a light airy elegant piece !!! The color is soft, yet not pastel ish.
This is a gorgeous blue. Without being overpowering or baby blue.
The Light grey stain withe the blue insert is a great accent for the base..
The top insert of blue is perfect – making it look like a beautiful custom piece.

What a beauty with the grey stain and furniture mold! after looking at the first photo of the table my thought was I love the detail – and i was focusing on your furniture mold! I’m unsure if I’ll try the molds but I have been checking out WoodUBend because of your pieces.

Hi Denise. I have been indecisive on a color for this apothocary looking table I have. I had a grand plan but I could not remove the hardware without damaging the drawers so I have to come up with a different plan now. Do you think Savannah Mist is too light for this kind of table? I’m stumped.
Hi Cheryl! Color can stump the best of us and I’m always hesitant to give color advice because it is so subjective. I think a Savannah Mist could look AMAZING on an apothocary looking table – especially if there was some darker distressing around the hardware and edges etc. But what I might like may not be what you prefer. The best advice I can give is to go with your gut and pick a color YOU love.
Hi Denise. I love how you turned this little table into an absolute gem! The Prima molds add that extra “wow” factor and the top finish is gorgeous. I would have thought it was your original plan:). Blue is my favorite color, so I’m adding this piece to my inspiration list. Beautiful!
