So yesterday, I left you with A Way to Avoid Sanding and the BEFORE of this dresser with mirror. Today I’m excited to show you the restyled AFTER!
To keep the integrity of this antique looking piece, I decided to paint it with an old fashion muted blue and showcase some of the original stain. It turned out exactly as I envisioned – and believe me, this isn’t always the case lately! lol
This small dresser+mirror has been painted with Fusion Homestead Blue.
The original stain has been left intact except on the dresser top and the mirror applique.
The top wasn’t in the best condition and needed a good sanding. After, I applied a 50/50 mix of General Finishes Gel Stains. Java and Colonial Maple were used to recreate the original stain color of this piece.
Pretty good match right? Can you tell the difference?
I think it turned out amazing. I’m being more adventurous with stains so this project built up my confidence – I won’t hesitate to ‘play’ with stains to get a desired effect or color!
Although the keys are M.I.A, I love that this piece has original stained keyholes. It’s a small detail that adds character and looks sweet against the dark paint!
I knew these knobs would be perfect for this piece. The color and pattern add the perfect touch to finish this dresser off nicely.
And just for smiles, I’ll leave you with a behind-the-scenes-shot of my new brick backdrop. Push pinned, duct taped and cut all crooked… thank goodness for photo editing!
My sister surprised me with this textured wallpaper – thanks Andrea… LOVE IT! The challenge – I don’t know how to hang it without “really hanging it”.
If any of you have ideas on how to make this backdrop portable, I’m all ears!!! 🙂

Backdrop is great and yeah, the insulated foam sheets are great, EXCEPT they tend to bow, but for this, a good choice and you could put actual bead board on the other side to make it rigid, still light and give you two sides. The brick is great for this piece, but some pieces you want a softer look or to make a color pop, so a light washed greige over beadboard would look awesome as your reverse.

For the backdrop, google “map hanger” or “map rail.” That and some command hooks could do the trick? Then you could roll the whole thing up around a fabric tube (if the paper is flexible enough) and it would be truly portable.

I can’t believe I was anxious to see the result! Yes, I was, and I’m a guy! Well, it was worth the wait! Love the blue with the original stain colors. Just the right balance.
Question, I salvage knob and handles from pieces that are too far gone, where did you find those little gems?
For the backdrop, ridged foam insulation is light and durable. I like the idea of making it reversible too! I think you could piece it together vertically at the grout joints on the brick pattern. That way, the reverse could have headboard up 3-4 feet and plaster look above that.

Thanks, you put a big smile on my face John. 🙂 I’d love to say these knobs were salvaged but Hobby Lobby gets all the credit. As for the backdrop, I’m going to look into ridged foam insulation. I’ll be honest, I’ve never heard of ridged foam but hopefully Lowe’s or Home Depot carries it. Light and easy to move would be perfect!

As far as your backdrop. There are portable contraptions you can make with pvc pipe on pinterest. Similar to the ones the professional photographers use. Type in the search bar ‘diy portable photo backdrops’ and you’ll get pins like this website http://www.lifeisaprayer.com/articles/photography/diy-greenscreen. Good luck!

Lovely color, great minimal distressing to bring out the color. Gorgeous applique. Great idea for backdrop! Just an idea for backdrop: Take some kind of rigid panel (MDF, Masonite,the thinner the better etc, whatever is cheapest),paste wallpaper to it & mount it on a swivel wheeled base (think clothing rack). Something on wheels that you can move around. Another nice backdrop would be to cover the panel with bead board wallpaper. Maybe even a reversible panel with 2 different backdrops for different pieces. Sort of like my old dishwasher that came with different colored slide-in front panels LOL. Thanks for sharing the info on this piece. Did you wax or clear coat?
I really like your ‘reversible’ idea Tracy!!! I thought of MDF or some board but then was unsure how it was going to lean perfectly against the wall without tipping over. The only thing is if I put it on some type of wheels or base, it will show up in the bottom of all my pics. Hmmmm… thinking out loud here…lol. The painted areas are waxed and I used General Finishes High Performance Flat on the stained. 🙂
