I’m not the frilly-girly-type, but I do LOVE PINK! Pink is a feel-good color. It’s usually associated with femininity, romance, sweetness or childhood – and depending on the hue, it can be sophisticated and elegant or youthful and lighthearted.
Recently, some amazing pink painted furniture has been catching my eye on Pinterest and in decor magazines. I’ve included a link to the magazine that featured THIS Farmhouse Chic Dresser along with some fun ‘pink’ get-to-know-me-facts at the end of today’s post!
With all this pink-praise, I don’t know why it’s taken me so long to paint a piece in this color – and because it’s a color I never use, I’m excited to share my Pretty in Pink Farmhouse Chic Dresser with you!
Here’s what this dresser looked like when I picked it up. The top was in rough shape with deep scratches, watermarks, and cracked veneer so it sat in my inventory for months. Every time I looked at it, I thought of the time required to remove the veneer {which seriously doesn’t take a lot of time at all!} but I kept putting it off.
MMM likes to tease me and say – “It’s not going to fix itself”. I like to joke back saying – “It’s not going to grow legs and wander off either… it’ll still be here when I’m inspired to work on it”. To date – I haven’t lost a one! π
The paint used for this piece was bought at my local ReStore. It’s a perfect color match to Sherwin Williams SW6308 Possibly Pink. I mixed it into a custom diy chalk paint for the body and distressed it so the dark wood peeks through. The body was hand waxed to a soft sheen.
The top and legs have been stained with Varathane’s Kona Gel Stain and top coated and protected with a satin poly. I find I’m using the combination of wax and poly more and more these days. It’s great to have a durable and easy to clean poly-coated top while maintaining a soft wax sheen on the body.
On a recent trip to Rochester NY, I found two rustic farmhouse windows along with some galvanized pieces at a yard sale. It’s always fun to find authentic knick-knacks for styling furniture and my home.
And aren’t these hand-carved floral knobs adorable? These antique wood pulls are the originals from my driftwood buffet. As an added touch, I lined the inside of the drawers with Burlap Paper to keep with the Farmhouse Chic theme.
A few {pink} facts about me:
As a kid, I loved Dubble Bubble, Cotton Candy and Barbie • I think pink sunsets are heavenly • I prefer pink roses over red • I admire people who drive around in cool pink cars • I’m 40 something years old and I still blush on occasion…this could be the oncoming of hot flashes? • I once contracted pinkeye from dropping my contact lens into a sink and then wearing it anyway • And lastly, I think there’s something very attractive about a man who can wear pink and still look super masculine – like MMM π
ReLoved Magazine Valentine’s Day Feature for this Farmhouse Chic Dresser!
I always love hearing from you so chime in with your thoughts on the color PINK!
Have a great day and happy painting friends!
Denise x

I generally find this type of blush pink is almost a neutral. It seems to go well with nearly everything, adding a bit of warmth. Iβm curious why you used an exterior topcoat. Iβm finding my chalk clear coat or even the Gator Hide donβt stand up to scratches or wear and tear as well as Iβd like. Is this one youβd recommend for side tables or shelving?
This piece has such such a soft look that makes it seem like it would look nice in a variety of rooms. I really like the combination of the natural wool look and painted finish.. thanks for posting this look.
Hi Tricia! I agree. These blush pinks work very well as neutrals yet add a bit of femininity to a space. As for the topcoats, I’m a HUGE fan of Gator Hide and DB Topcoats but if your looking for more durability, yes, an outdoor poly will work really well. π
Just gorgeous Denise!!!
Thank you Taina! x
Love this! Have a question tho. How do you know if a piece has veneer on top? I have a coffee table of my grandmother’s and it has a beautiful design on top but I can’t tell if it’s true wood or not? It’s pretty scratched up but has no bubbles…. just seems extra slick to be just wood though?? Haha! Idk I can’t tell what it is!!
The more you work with furniture the easier it is to tell but I had NO IDEA at first. Here’s an article that may help. π
I have a piece just like that sitting in storage waiting to be redone! I love what you did with yours. That color is perfect. Pale and icy pinks are so pretty. Dark/hot pink, not-so-much. π
It really depends on the piece, doesn’t it? I’ve seen some dark/hot pinks that look fabulous but like you, it’s usually not preference.
Gorgeous I’m a big fan of dark legs and the knobs are perfect. I am getting ready to paint my desk and this pink will work well.
Love your posts
Cynthia
Thanks, Cynthia! And so glad it gave you some ideas for your desk makeover! π
I see this post was put out several years ago. Pink is still going strong, especially in the French Country Style. I love the soft color of this dresser and the stained legs decrease the feminine look so it could be used in most decor. I am really glad I read this for the post on removing veneer because I have a Godzilla size piece that I am trying to take the veneer off!! Thanks for sharing!
Also, the Alstromeria lilies in the vintage sifter is priceless!
Thank Cecilia. I love them too! π
I have fallen in love with this dresser!! Any thoughts on where I could find a piece like this? I have someone local that can refinish but I’ve not been able to find the dresser.
Thanks Allison! Have you tried looking on Craigslist or at your local Thrift Stores. I often find older pieces at yard sales too!
Facebook marketplace, too.
I am very new to chalk paint; but have my supplies and your inspirations to assist. My question is this…I found a lovely old butter yellow wooden dresser that I would like to chalk paint in either this beautiful pink or coral. Can I paint directly over this yellow paint not truly knowing if it has a varnish on the top…should I lightly sand…when I go to distress I will have to use a sander to get below the coat(s) of yellow paint to reveal the wood? Thank you for your help/advice….
Hi Melitta! If you’re dresser has a shiny/glossy topcoat, a light sanding will be beneficial. For distressing, hand sanding is easy enough to do with brand name or diy chalk paint, but a sander will work well too. I usually use my sander if I’m looking for a heavy distressed look. This may be exactly what you’re looking for if you want to sand down to the raw wood. π
Adore this & perfect amount of distressing too.
I’m actually going to be looking for a piece I can convert into a laundry happier & diet of build into my cost when I remodel that to have a pop of girly pink or blush, but can be removed if the next owners one of theses days, freak out… lol
Thanks Chez <3... and Wonder Woman never freaks out my friend...lol π
Hi Denise,
Unlike you, I really don’t care for pink. And yet…this piece seems to be the exception to the rule. I love it! In your “before” picture I don’t see drawers so I’m curious–did you have to replace them and if so, how did you do that?
Love your blog. Thanks for all the inspiration and lovely “after” pictures.
Seeing as you don’t care for pink LuWana… HUGE compliment! The drawers and mirror (the mirror was painted pink too but I really didn’t like it on the finished piece so I’ll use it for something else) were removed and THEN I remember to take a before pic!
Iβm not a pink fan either, but this is so subtle, I love it!
Thanks Gwen! XO
Very pretty pink. Ordinarily I am not a pink person either….but this piece turned out so well….I am willing to rethink pink! Great professionally looking job!
Thanks so much Char! I think I’ll be using pink more often too π
Just lovely!! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Lis…and thanks for dropping by! π
Denise,
This is the first time I’ve seen unpainted legs and I like it. I was reading a post the other day written by a dealer who said that pink doesn’t sell. I completely disagree, pink sells. I’ve seen people with shops who only paint in three colors, white, pink and blue and they do well. As an antique dealer myself, I love that you respect the furniture and I only paint pieces that are beyond restoring like this one. If it has to be stripped, it is beyond restoration in my mind. I can’t sell anything that has been stripped. Other dealers, on-line, call natural finish furniture “brown” furniture like it has the pox or something. Painted and wood finishes come in and out of style but classic is classic and never goes out of style. You did a great job on this piece. I love it.
Ginene from Fox and Finch Antiques
Hi Ginene…glad you like the legs… and great points you’ve made! As for selling, the only other piece I’ve ever painted that comes close to pink is this MCM Coral Dresser back in 2014. It sold quickly. π
It looks fantastic! I love the color!
Thanks Kelly π
I love how this pink dresser turned out – the dark knobs, dark legs and burlap paper; and thank you so much for including my pink one in your favourites. I’m tickled pink!!!!!
Tickled pink…haha… your pieces and beautiful styling are always huge inspiration Mary!
Hi Denise, I love the whole piece but wondering if you coudl post somedetiasl of how to clean up the veneered top as I have a similar thing and no idea where to start though I have tried to sand the top with a fine grit paper but nothing much moving and I dont know how to remove the veneer. Your creativity continues to inspire us all π
To remove the veneer on this piece, I placed a damp towel and let it sit for a few hours to soften the glue – and then used my heat gun and a putty knife to scrape off all the old veneer. Here’s a more detailed tutorial on how to remove veneer Pat….and if you have any questions feel free to leave another comment. π
I have a wall table I am wanting to redo, and the top veneer has a few bubbles and a couple small spots missing, im stumped at what to do. ,I’ve heard of taking it off, and then do you just stain and sand what’s under it? Your piece is gorgeous, is that what you did?
Hi Angie! Yes, this piece had the veneer taken off and then the wood underneath was stained. If you have bubbles and a few spots missing, you could use glue and wood fill to fix it – and then paint. But if you want a stained top, removing damaged veneer usually works out very nicely. π
Absolutely beautiful. I paint a lot of furniture pink and really almost anything I can upcycle gets a pink makeover. I mix my own paint as well but I have to say your color is very soft and yummy. I might have to try a small can of that color to mix things up. Thank you for sharing.
Soft and yummy…that put a big smile on my face Regina. π
Love the pink Denise. What a gorgeous piece of furniture. You have a way of making everything look so classy.
Thanks Monique! <3
Love the dresser, reminds me of one I did a while ago. Pale pink body and top, but the drawer fronts were in off white. Brass castors and old gold rub n buff on the metal pulls. My daughter loved it. It reminded her of a bag of marshmallow flumps!
I just had to ‘google’ marshmallow flumps because I had no idea what they were Tania…lol. Your dresser sounds lovely… and funny you bring up the old gold rub’n’buff because I think gold pulls on pink look amazing! That was actually my original plan for this dresser. But as I’m working on a piece, the furniture often takes me in a different direction.;)
Beautifully done Denise π I too love pink (the musician and the colour…lol) it sort of suits that piece. Like some of your other followers comments I have no doubt it will sell in no time! I’m kind of digging the stained legs, never though about doing that but I’ll give it a try. All the best π
haha..I should have added that into my pink-facts because I like Pink too…I thought the Go-Furless Ad she did for Peta was pretty amazing! And glad your digging the stained legs Annie.:)
I love it! Pink is my favorite for girlie things, but my home is neutral and rustic. This piece looks great with that dark window. I have yet to see the legs left, but I like it.
Thanks Jane! I have to give full credit to my sister Andrea for the window above this dresser. When we returned from Rochester, I stored the 2 windows in my garage. When I started styling this piece, I totally forgot I had them until she reminded me. Sisters are the best!!! And so glad you like the stained legs.
Pink! My favourite colour. =D And I am definitely the frilly-girly type, haha! This one turned out beautifully, and the burlap lining is a nice touch. Like Laura said, I bet this one is going to be sold in a heartbeat. =) With that soft pink being one of the colours of the year, a lot of people are going to look for an elegant statement piece with it.
I didn’t know that soft pink was one of the colors of the year but that may explain why I’ve been seeing more and more pink furniture on Pinterest! And I should have guessed pink is your favorite… it suits you! π
Beautiful job, knobs add so much with the two-tone look. I have one pink piece & I love it!
Ohhhh lucky you Tracy! I once saw an entire room decorated with pink pieces, accents etc and it looked amazing! I would love to be able to pull off a pink piece in my decor. But the way my house is now, not happening lol. And Im so glad you like the knobs… I like them too. π They are so charming and really pop on this dresser!
Love it all but unpainted brown legs. Am I missing out on a new trend?
PS- love the fonts and page layout deign. Simple and elegant.
Thanks Debra! And yes! – in the last year I’ve been seeing more and more furniture painters designing their pieces this way. I’ll admit, when I first saw a painted piece with the legs stained, I thought ‘how lazy…lol…why didn’t they finish up the legs?’ But the more pieces I see, the more I’m loving this look. I used this same design on this 1930’s China Cabinet. I’m sure it’s not for everyone, but it’s fun to try new creative techniques with furniture. And as for the new theme/design, it was a long time coming but I’m really pleased too. I hope it’s a lot easier for you to navigate, read comments and find what you’re looking for. π
I love this piece! I guessed a coral color before looking at the images. You do such a beautiful job! This one may not have walked away before you refinished it, but I bet now it will be running out the door?
lol….thanks Laura! I’ll be posting it for sale shortly so I hope you’re right! π
