Aside from my regular go-to brushes, I also have a variety of artists paint brushes for painting my furniture. Artists paint brushes come in all different shapes and sized and are amazing for faux finishes and fine detailing.
These brushes can neatly and precisely paint in the smallest nooks and crannies of furniture trim, appliques, moulding or fretwork.
In my experience, artists paint brushes are unmatched for faux finishes and getting into tight areas a larger brush simply can’t.
Here’s a perfect example. My last make-over was a mismatched head/foot board that was spray painted. To achieve a subtle highlight effect on on the raised detailing, I used a small artists fan brush with a feather touch.
Perfect faux finish for this dry brushing technique on this beautiful set ~ no mess, no fuss, no waste!
I can’t imagine trying to get this dry brush detailing on the head and foot board even with my smallest Purdy brush. It makes the job so much easier when you have an appropriate sized brush to work with so don’t hesitate to switch brushes!

I use anything I can find, from artist brushes to toothbrushes! Whatever will achieve the look I am going for. Love, love, love the bed! Would love to do one like that. Keep inspiring all of us who are a lot less creative!
Good advice Denise. I have a supply of artist brushes because when I was in college a took several painting classes. I use them a lot now for my craft projects and they do come in handy when painting furniture for getting into tight spots and any detailing. (A few of my brushes have seen their days, but I refuse to throw them out) 🙂
Painting classes…Nice! I always dreamed of taking painting classes but instead I took drawing and photography classes. Funny, I still ended up with paint brushes in hand! And keep those brushes Judy, I have a lot of old art supplies I won’t get rid of either. I know how you feel… it warms my heart to have them around. 🙂
Good post Denise, I do too, albeit cheapo ones. I keep meaning in invest in a few good ones that bristles don’t keep falling out of. Fan bush is a good idea. What did you paint the long thin raised line with on this same set. I find it difficult to keep a steady even hand on such a thin narrow line without bleeding into adjacent paint color.
I used the fan brush Tracy. Because the line/details are slightly raised off the headboard, I pressed my pinky onto the headboard to steady my hand while lightly brushing with a feather touch. I’m like you though, if it wasn’t raised detail, I mask off with painters tape because I’m all over the place..lol.
Just remembered the stash of art brushes I’ve had for decades! Found them & they are all in great shape. Oh score! Thanks for the idea!
