Salvaged Chairs into DIY Frames

HOW TO TURN DATED SALVAGED CHAIR BACKS INTO DIY FRAMES.

It’s Trash to Treasure Tuesday and I’m thrilled you’re here! If you’re new to the #siblog, every second Tuesday I join 4 of my talented friends for a T2T party. I can’t wait to see what they’ve been up to this week. But first, here’s my trashy dated chair backs that I turned into DIY Frames!

If you’ve been part of my #sifamily for the last year, you may recognize this before. These salvaged chairs have gone through a good few makeovers over the years. I’m finally using one of the last pieces of these chairs for today’s makeover.

CHAIR BACK TO FRAMES

I see dated chairs similar to this in the thrift store ALL the time. I’ve created Easy DIY Risers and Candle Holders from these exact chairs just to name a few projects, but I have to admit these frames might just be my favorite.

STEP #1:: Clean and Sand

I started by giving these chair backs a good cleaning because they were super dusty from hanging out in my paint room for over a year.

STEP #2:: Remove Nails

Originally, there were a ton of nails holding in the upholstered back. To be safe, I removed them with these needle pliers before doing any more work. This wasn’t fun. There were A LOT of nails!

STEP #3:: Fill Nail Holes and Dings

I used Dixie Belle’s Mud filler to fill in the nail holes and dings.

STEP #4:: Cut To Size

A little overkill but I had my Miter Saw out a ready to go so I used it to trim the ends and remove the dowels. A hand saw would work just as well in trimming off the ends. 🙂

STEP #5:: Prime & Paint

After sanding down the wood filler and trimming the edges to size, I sanded down the surface and applied this primer/sealer. The frames were painted in Fluff and then I dried brush the tops in Sawmill Gravy.

STEP #6:: Drill Hole On Back

For easy hanging, I drilled a hole in the back of the frame.

After finding these botanical prints in my stash, I cut them to size and attached them to the back with tape. I like that these prints are interchangeable depending on my mood or the season!

  4. Aww! I love the way you utilized the old chairs to make a beautiful piece of art. I have a pair of the same as these chairs in my backyard. I am going to give it a try on next weekend to make these frames for the wall of my sunroom.

    • Hi Janina and thank YOU! There aren’t many parts left of this chair. It’s pretty much been picked over and upcycled.🤣I included the other projects in the Related Posts section.😊

  23. THese are great and such a great vision to dismantle the chairs! The botanical prints are perfect and fun that you have more to change out as your moods move you!
    Do you have a vision for the seats?

    I’d asked before about the brick background in a side video and it showed up today in your video of whitewashing the staging chair for these chair backs.it looks black and i think i’d asked if you had painted the bricks black and then white washed them. It’s not the typical red peeking through.

    • Hi Gwen!!! The seats for these old dining chairs are MIA and I don’t recall if it was me that got rid of them or if I found them that way?? I did create a really cute riser from the other chair seat and spindles from the dining chairs though. 🙂 The brick wall was put up by the previous owners and it’s a grey/black/white brick. It also has some paint blotches on it because I test my sprayer on my walls before spraying my furniture.😁
