THIS OLD DRESSER GETS A SUNNY MAKEOVER USING A CUSTOM COLOR AND BELLES AND WHISTLES SUNFLOWER TRANSFER | GIVEAWAY ALERT!!!
Hi, sweet #sifamily! Are you ready to be inspired by sunflowers? 🌻 I have an 8-foot blooming sunflower plant in my garden and I also recently visited an 8-acre sunflower maze. Maybe my creative muse is trying to tell me something.😉 So I dug into my transfer stash and got busy. I have this gorgeous Sunflower Transfer Dresser Makeover along with a fun GIVEAWAY to share with you today!
It’s also Furniture Fixer Upper day – one of my favorite days of the month! I’m joining my furniture painting besties and linking to their makeovers below… so be sure to check them out later in the post.
Here’s the vintage dresser I started with. My friend Mara (from Revived by Mara) and I took a Sunday trip to Elmira where they have a barn full of antique furniture. Judging from the thick coat of dust on this dresser top, this little one wasn’t finding a new home. Maybe because it was missing the mirror.
Here’s her bright NEW sunflower look. What do you think? So sweet and cheery right?!
Call me crazy but this dresser reminds me of a little girl’s outfit. Bright top with white sunflower skirt… so I Googled it and there are a TON… I think sunflowers are a thing!

SUNFLOWER TRANSFER DRESSER
Here’s how it all came together…
PREP
The mirror and hardware were removed and then I gave this vintage dresser a good cleaning with White Lightening followed by a good scuff sanding with my orbital Sander + 120 grit.
FILLING WITH BONDO
Once it was all cleaned and scuff sanded, I filled the hardware holes and details on the top drawer with Bondo. I have a full tutorial including a youtube video on How To Use Bondo For Furniture here.
Here’s how it looked after it was cleaned, prepped, and filled.
ADDING WOODUBEND MOULDING
To tie the sunflower theme together, I added this floral WoodUbend Moulding. It came in a pack of two and I love their NEW packaging – brilliant! I heated the moulding up with my heat gun, applied wood glue, and attached it to the center of the top drawer. These WoodUbend Mouldings are super easy to use!
PRIME AND PAINT
After the WoodUbend Floral Moulding had dried, I gave this dresser two coats of BIN Shellac Base Primer.
To get a custom ‘sunflower’ paint color, I used a half and half mix of this Colonel Mustard and this Rebel Yellow. Gorgeous and the exact shade I was after!
PRO TIP ~ Don’t be afraid to mix your paints! If you’re just starting out and mixing colors feels a little intimidating, buy 2-3 colors you LOVE and then a white and black. This way you can lighten and darken the colors you have on hand and it will give you SO many variations.
I blended my custom sunflower yellow into this Cotton White. You can find my full tutorial including a video on How To Blend Paint here.
RUBBING ON SUNFLOWER TRANSFER
Applying these furniture transfers is very easy. After I picked which part of the sunflower design I wanted to use (these transfer designs usually last me for a good few makeovers!) I peeled off the back and placed it on the dresser. Then using the wooden rub-on tool, I rubbed the clear transfer sheet until the design adhered.
ADDING CUP HARDWARE
I added cup handles to ground the piece and tie it to the theme.
SHADING AND TOPCOAT
The last step was to shade my WoodUbend flower with this brown wax.
The shading added so much depth!
Once my wax totally dries (which it didn’t have enough time to dry before I did this photoshoot), I’ll be spraying this entire dresser with 2-3 coats of this Satin Clear Coat.
