SUZANNE’S FALL COLOR DRESSER MAKEOVER
Can you believe Fall is here already?!! Dixie Belle sent me these gorgeous Limited Time Only Fall Paint Colors to try. Seriously, I’m so in love with these 5 colors I had a really hard time picking which one to use. I don’t think I could have gone wrong regardless of which one I chose though. Here’s how it all came together…
PREP
To prep this piece for paint I gave all the cobwebs a good vacuum and removed the hardware. Then this dresser got a good cleaning inside and out with this White Lightning.
What do you think of this hardware, btw? I had mixed feeling about it and wasn’t sure if I was going to keep it on this piece or not.
FILL AND REPAIR
I filled the hardware holes and a few imperfections on the body using Bondo. As I mentioned before, I use this All-Purpose Bondo rather than the Wood Bondo because I have found very little to no difference between the two — other than the latter being more costly. You can see my full tutorial on How To Repair With Bondo here.
SAND
Using my orbital sander I sanded down the Bondo-filled areas and saw some beautiful wood veneer underneath. If you’re unsure what the difference between veneer and laminate is, I have a full tutorial here. I still wasn’t sure what color or direction I was taking. So I kept on sanding the top, top drawer, and bottom to see what it might look like with a wood and paint combo.
PRIMER
To seal in any bleedthrough, I gave this dresser two coats of this BIN Shellac Primer. If you missed my full tutorial including a video on How To Use BIN Shellac Primer you can see it here.
PAINT
I ended up choosing Juniper for this MCM dresser. Juniper is a woodsy muted green with gray undertones reminiscent of a walk in the crisp, fall forest!
HEMP OIL + STAIN
For the exposed wood veneer sections, I ended up with a happy mistake. Hemp Oil was all I was going to apply but when I did the red in the veneer was too much. To mute it down I used this Weathered Gray Stain applying it right over the Hemp Oil as they are both oil-based products.
To tone down the Weathered Gray Stain, I sanded it down to leave a hint of it in the grain. It wasn’t my original plan but it looks great against the grey undertones of this Juniper paint finish!
DRAWER FRESHENER + TOPCOAT
To finish this piece off I wanted to freshen up the drawers. They are in meticulous shape but they were smelling a little old. Big Mamma’s Butta to the rescue! This is a totally NEW scent called Flannel and it’s fabulous. I really wish this screen was a scratch-and-sniff so you could enjoy it as well! 😉
The stain was not yet dry enough to topcoat but once it is, I’ll be spraying 2-3 coats of this Satin Clear Coat for protection.

I have a lot of mid-century pieces and hope to have the nerve to do them up and the skills to make them half as nice as yours. The green is luscious. I do think the red of the mahogany is still pretty strong. I wonder if any of your fall colors are a little more “golden.” Thanks.
Hi Nette! I hope you give a few of those mid-century pieces a new lease on life too! These are so much fun to work on! 🙂
Absolutely gorgeous! Love the way the stain turned out!
Thanks so much, Alanna! Love these happy accidents…lol. 😉
Loving Juniper! Great color choice. I also love that you didn’t paint all the fronts. Great color contrast!!
I’m loving this Juniper as well and thanks Mary Ann! 🙂
So pretty!!! Just love the way you used the gray stain to tone down the red in the wood! Spectacular!
These fall colors are SPECTACULAR… thank you!!! 🤗
These paint colors are so beautiful! Juniper looks amazing on that piece.
They are and thanks Natalia! XOXO
How beautiful! Your furniture always turns out so elegant!
Aw, thanks, Julia! XOXO
This is so gorgeous! Great job!😊
Thank you Kaila! 🙂

This transformation is gorgeous in green! It turned out lovely!
Hi Cortlyn! Thank you so much. Juniper was such a fun color to use!
CRAZY PRETTY!! Love the new fall colors and LOVE what you did with the Juniper!
Aw, thanks Teri! These Fall colors are CRAZY PRETTY and so much fun to work with!
Denise, that green is gorgeous! Great choice. XO
Thanks Jen! Have a super weekend. XOXO
This is a very interesting makeover! The hemp oil and stain give it a pinkish tone and it works with the green. I was not a fan of the hardware but once redone it all fits perfectly!
Thanks, Celia! I was on the fence with the hardware as well but I’m glad I kept it. 🙂
Green is my favourite colour so I’m loving how the juniper looks on your piece Denise!
Thanks Sara! I’m a huge green fan as well. 😉
What a beautiful makeover. I tend to stay away from fall colors, but that green is gorgeous.
Thanks so much Lizzy! 🙂
Beautiful green color! Very nice job! Can I as you a question? Can Gator Hide be sanded between coats. I think my second coat was a bit heavy and left some streaking. I’d like to work some of it out before putting on another coat. Also what grade sand paper would you use? This is my first time using GH.
Thanks Cheryl! And yes. Gator Hide works best when thin coats are applied and I like to give a SUPER light sanding in between each coat with a 320 grit. I do this with all my topcoats. On my very last coat, I do not sand. Hope this helps. 🙂
Beautiful! It reminds me of an updated version of the shaker look in the 90s–stained top and green body. Well done! I just ordered some Dixie Belle to re-do a waterfall vanity. I can’t wait to do it. Talk about sad! LOL! You are a true inspiration!
A sad waterfall vanity that I’m sure you’ll make gorgeous! Thanks so much and have fun Leslie! 🙂
Denise,
Once again you created a beautiful masterpiece!!!! I’m not a fan of green, but I have to say, this is one of the prettiest colors with all that brass hardware, decor, it really pops!!!!!! I love that you kept the same hardware to put back on it, it’s interesting shape and looks like it was made for this piece. Thanks so much for sharing with us and hope to see what you will be doing with the other new colors in this line of Dixie Belle.
jean
Hi Jean!! It’s Murphy’s Law when it comes to hardware. Whenever I fill in the holes I keep the old hardware… when I don’t, I wish I had..lol. I’m glad I kept the original for this piece as well. 🙂
I love that green, Denise! It mixes so well with the wood tones and the gold! XOXO
Thanks Christy! I love this green as well! XOXO
Dear Denise,
I’m loving the MCM look! And that color of green is beautiful 😍 Great job 💗
Thanks Angee! 🙂
You worked your magic again Denise, what a difference! The green with the accident stain is amazing!
Thanks my friend. Just glad it worked out to be a happy accident. 😉
Hi Denise. Another incredible makeover. Before you transformed this dresser, it looked really plain and sad. I love the beautiful fall green you chose paired with the wood accents. Absolutely brilliant:)
Awww, thanks Monique! I had SUCH a hard time picking a color but I think this Juniper really brings this piece to life as well! XOXO
