A WINE BOX MAKEOVER USING THE ALL-NEW TERRA CLAY PAINT BY DIXIE BELLE | YOUTUBE VIDEO
Hi beautiful friends and thanks for joining me! Today I’m trying a NEW PAINT LINE – Terra Clay Paint by Dixie Belle! I’m always a little hesitant to try new paint on a piece of furniture without first getting a ‘feel’ for it. So I played around with it on this salvaged wine box and I can’t wait to share what this Terra Clay Paint can do!

But first, here’s the salvaged wine box I started with. It’s one of three wine boxes my sister Marzenna gifted to me. I’ll link the first one turned Seed Box in the Related Posts below.
This was a perfect project to test a new paint on!
And check out all the grooves in this wine box. I’m pointing them out for a reason which I’ll share later in this makeover.

TERRA CLAY PAINT
Terra Clay Paint is an artisan paint that can be blended, layered, textured, and easily reactivates with water. It comes in 18 highly pigmented colors and is made up of a natural clay base.
Here’s how it all came together on this project…
PREP | CLEAN
I didn’t do anything more than give this wine box a wipe-down. However, Terra Clay Paint can be painted onto walls, floors, canvas, plastic, wood, tiles, glass, or pretty much anything you can imagine so long as proper prep has been done. The first step to any makeover is always a proper cleaning.
PAINT
For my base color, I used Lani’s Lagoon and the first thing I noticed was the paint was thick and very pigmented. As you’ll see in the Youtube Video below, I stuck my fingers in it to test the consistency and feel. Maybe a little weird but I haven’t started eating my paints so I think I’m okay. 😛
This paint also has an ever-so-slight odor but I’ll admit I’m a scent-sensitive person. I’m guessing it’s the clay but if any of you have tried this line, I’d love to hear what you think it is… or if you smelled anything at all.
I used a premium chip brush to apply the paint as they suggest natural bristles rather than synthetic ones. That said, I’ve seen some of my colleagues online using synthetic brushes to apply this paint and it seems to work really well. I also wanted to point out I’m really impressed with the coverage. I did use my spray mist bottle to thin out this paint on the first coat and it still covered the black text on the box really well as seen below. Amazing one-coat coverage!
SECOND COAT OF TERRA
I waited two hours for this first coat of Lani’s Lagoon to dry and then added my second coat. To create some texture and interest with these artisan paints I choose Malachite Green. To create a textured mottled finish, I dabbed the green on using the same premium chip brush.
Then using my spray mister bottle, I sprayed the wet paint to allow it to move and dabbed at it with a shop towel until I liked the look. And I’ll be honest, this was the UGLY stage but I had a vision. Wait till you see how it all comes together at the end!
REACTIVATE WITH WATER
I painted right over the hardware to test the reactivation with the water property of this paint. Once the paint finish was 100% dry, I took a little water on a shop towel and EASILY rubbed the paint off the hardware. So if you were to use this artisan paint on anything with glass, mirror, plastic, or metal, it will come right off with a little water even if it’s 100% dry!
I also tried rubbing the paint off the lip of the lid and it did come off BUT it stained the lip because it’s so pigmented. I wish I had taken a picture but you’ll see what I mean in the video I included below.
TRANSFER
Here’s why I pointed out all the grooves in this wine box at the beginning of this post… because I added a transfer design into the grooved wood! I used this GORGEOUS Emroidered Lotus Transfer design.
Using two hands I made sure to hold the design in place (because it did try pulling up when I was using the corner of the applicator stick to press the transfer into the grooves) while rubbing the transfer on. I have a full tutorial on How To Rub On Furniture Transfers here.
I wasn’t expecting the transfer to go on perfectly with all this grooved wood but I wasn’t worried about it cracking in places. With the textured paint finish, the imperfect florals just add to the look of this box!
TOPCOAT | PROTECTION
Because Terra Paint reactivates so easily with water, it is important to protect your work with this Terra Seal. I applied two coats. Like most topcoats, it goes on looking milky and dries hard and clear.
MY THOUGHTS ON TERRA CLAY PAINT
This feels like artisan paint. I love it and will definitely be using it again for similar projects. It’s inspiring me to run out and buy a large canvas to do some abstract paintings for my walls!

I was a little worried during its ‘ugly’ phase but I love how it all came together. The key is to trust in the creative process and your vision! 😉
Check out these grooves… I think they’re groovy! The paint finish along with the transfer makes it look amazing and gives it a lot of interest!
The once-painted-over hardware looks good now too!

That is absolutely beautiful! The clay paint is very interesting. I was imagining using it on my bathroom wall to give it a plastered look. Do you think that would work? Maybe the moisture from the shower would not be good for it, though. Unless it was sealed really well. Anyway, your wine box turned out amazingly with the beautiful transfer you chose. Great makeover!
Hi Naomi! I think you can definitely get a plastered look using this paint however I’m not sure how well it would hold up in a steamy bathroom. It reactivated with water VERY EASILY so yes, it would have to be sealed really well. On the DB website it states it can be used on walls but personally, I would double-check if that includes a humid bathroom.

Oh Denise! This box is stunning! And ironically, the paint choices you used really do look like malachite! I’m thrilled that another company besides DIY paint is now selling clay paint. I haven’t checked yet but I hope it’s less expensive than Debbie’s clay paint, I’ve been dying to try clay paint but unfortunately, it isn’t available in Europe, and even if it was it would be far too expensive for me.
And the transfer you used is gorgeous. I’m not really a flowery kind of gal but I do like styalized flowers like Jacobean or Indian flowers. Probably why I like the lotus transfer so much!

Very interesting. I like the transfers you chose to pair with the box. I can also see a southwest vibe working. Would you say the finish is softer than chalk paint? Chalk paint and I don’t get along so I’m always trying to find an alternative. The Tera clay line seems bold. I’m excited to see more pieces using it.
I think the finish with this Terra Clay paint can go both ways – soft OR bold depending on how it’s applied, watered down, etc. It’s so pigmented that I think the colors would still be gorgeous and could give a soft watercolor effect even if it was diluted with a lot of water! When used full strength and layered BOLD! A really fun artisans paint!

What a great trash to treasure makeover. The coloring is beautiful. I have to admit though, those groves could have been quite a challenge but it all works together so beautifully. Well, the box is gorgeous! I was wondering how you decide whether to use the mineral paint, Silk, or Terra for a project? Do you find any more expensive than the others? Are any of the paints easier to work with than the others?

Thanks Rebecca! This was my first time using Terra Clay Paint so my deciding factor for this project was to try it out. hehe But I do have my favorites and go-to’s. Silk All In One Mineral Paint for spraying my furniture. It gives such a gorgeous sprayed professional look. Chalk Mineral Paint for brushing, layering and faux finishes. And now I can add Terra Clay Paint to the mix for faux finishes as well. As for price point, I believe the Silk-All-In-One is the most expensive out of the three because it saves you money on topcoat and primer. Hope this helps. 🙂

Hi Denise! I haven’t tried the Terra Clay paint but I have used Debi’s Design Diary DIY clay paint. I love to use it on smalls and alot of the Boho dressers are done by Clay paint. Dionne paints her canvases with Clay paint as well. The box turned out great!! It is definitely an Artisan paint.
Yessss, I’ve heard amazing reviews on Debi’s Design DIY Clay Paint. I’ve also seen Dionne’s art canvases and they are gorgeous! I’ve never tried painting a canvas but I’d like to!
