A HOMEMADE NIGHTSTAND GETS A DRAMATIC MAKEOVER USING TRANSFERS FOR FURNITURE | FOLK I TRANSFER MAKEOVER
Hi sweet SI family and thanks for joining me today! Are you into using transfers for furniture makeovers? Have you given them a try? I restyled this homemade nightstand and can’t wait to share what a dramatic impact this Folk I transfer made! I’m also sharing my go-to foam roller for painting furniture and an easy how-to-video on how to apply your transfers.
Here’s what I started with…
Here’s the new look! I went for a tribal folk look. Super cute, right?!
What a difference. I love the graphic design and black and white contrast!

FOLK I NIGHTSTAND MAKEOVER
You may remember this nightstand. It’s a curb-shopped homemade piece that I was using as a nightstand before I restyled my bedroom. I added a textured Grass Wallpaper back in 2017. Because it’s a high traffic piece and got a ton of use, the wallpaper eventually started to let go. Rather than glue it down again, I decided it was time for a fun makeover!
Once I peeled off the wallpaper and removed the hardware (I’m saving for another project!), I filled the hardware holes with Bondo and gave the piece a sanding. I have a full tutorial on How To Repair Furniture With Bondo here.
I primed with B-I-N Shellac Primer and then painted the nightstand in two coats of this pure white Cotton Chalk Mineral Paint. For a super quick paint job with NO BRUSH STROKES, I love these high-density 4″ rollers. I buy them online here or sometimes I’m lucky enough to find them at my local Dollar Store.
If you’re looking for tips on how to achieve a smoooooooth finish, I have a full tutorial on How To Paint Without Brush Marks. These rollers definitely made the list!
Now for the fun! I used this Folk I Furniture Transfer to create a tribal Folk design. I cut the transfer into pieces and played around until I was happy with the design on each drawer. I love getting creative with transfers and piecing them together in my own unique way!
Once I was happy with how the design came together, I removed the backing of the transfer and used this Rub-On-Method to adhere the transfer to the drawers. I have a full post including a step-by-step video here.
These furniture transfers can TOTALLY change your furniture style!
For the hardware, I used these old ugly wood knobs and sprayed them with this Rust-Oleum Black Satin.
Now they look amazing on the piece and tie in perfectly!
To seal the paint and transfer, I sprayed 3 coats of this Satin Clear Coat. Here’s another look at the before and after!
LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK OF THIS TRIBAL FOLK I PRIMA TRANSFER FURNITURE MAKEOVER… OR FEEL FREE TO ASK ANY QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE… I ALWAYS LOVE HEARING FROM YOU.
Happy furniture painting my friends!

So, I’m curious, what if I came across a dresser like this with a transfer on it and wanted to repurpose it. How would I get rid of the transfer if I didn’t like it? Would I be able to sand it off or just have to paint over it or what?
Denise says
Hi Evelyn! Yes, you could sand the transfers off but I wouldn’t suggest painting over them. Any little crinkle or unfurnished edge or crack in the transfer would show through your finish.

Oh I LOVE this! Was there much of the transfer left? For resale I hate to put a lot of extra expense in a piece, but this one is tempting! People are really cheap here in AZ!
Denise says
Thanks, Jackie! And yes, definitely enough for another project although it will take some finagling because it’s bits and pieces now that I cut it all up. 🙂

Just beautiful! I really enjoy your creations. I think I would have painted the tiny round feet black as well. Love the transfers you used and I appreciate your roller tip!
Denise says
Thanks, Jane! 🙂 I was going to change the feet out! But the ones that I had on hand, I wasn’t 100% sure they suited the piece so I left the originals.
