Why didn’t I think of this quick-tip? There have been so many times I’ve ended up with clumps and bumps of hard paint or primer on my sandpaper. My solution – throw my sandpaper away and grab a new one!
Here’s a simple solution shared by Jennifer at Trillium Park Designs...
[box] “After applying primer with a foam brush, I use a 220 grit sanding block and a fine grit sanding sponge to get a silky smooth finish. At this point, it only needs to feel smooth to the touch; it doesn’t need to look good! Be sure to occasionally knock the accumulated dust off your sandpaper with a wire brush to prevent hard primer clumps forming on the sandpaper and marring your finish. Onward to the first coat of paint!”[/box]
Take a look at Jennifer’s flawless finish on these MCM pieces. Absolutely gorgeous!

How many topcoats would this piece have Denise? It’s really beauiful
It’s gorgeous isn’t it! Patricia, this isn’t one of my pieces so I’m not sure how many coats were applied. Feel free to click on one of the two links I provide in this post to visit “Trillium Park Designs Facebook Page”. I’m sure Jennifer would be happy to let you know how many coats she used! 🙂
I use a 1/4 sheet palm sander most of the time. One thing I’ll do is run it on the concrete for a few seconds. Takes a lot of those crunchies off.
Discovered 3M Pro Grade Precision sanding sheets a couple of months ago. I’m totally in love with it. The paper itself is a dusky red, so easier to locate. They claim is lasts 10x longer. I believe them. Can be used wet or dry and is CLOG RESISTANT!! Got mine at Home Depot, 4 sheets. Can’t remember the price at the moment but saw the same, only with 3 sheets at Sherwin Williams for a buck more.
Rosie this is great… those ‘crunchies’ are one of those tiny annoyances that up until now; I didn’t realize could be helped..lol. I haven’t seen the 3M Pro Grade but I’m going to keep my eyes peeled.
Hi Denise,
I usually scrape off the paint/stain chunks with my fingers to avoid scratching the surface but this idea is far more friendly to my manicure!!
Thanks for you wonderful tips!!
Maxine
Manicure? What’s that? 😉 It’s been so long since my nails have looked ‘pretty’ the word sounds foreign to me…lol!
This is a fabulous tip and Pinworthy! 🙂 Thank you for passing it along to us!
Thanks for pinning Robin! I’m sure Jennifer will appreciate the share too. 🙂
A toothbrush or dust brush works too!
Brilliant!
