With our freezing winter temps and snow piled sky high, I’m dreaming of the warmth of a hot sun, long stretches of soft sandy beach, inviting crystal clear turquoise waters, and fruity tropical drinks with cocktail umbrellas.
What does this have to do with a French Country Sideboard?
It’s proof that inspiration can come from anywhere at anytime!
My day dreaming inspired me to mix a custom turquoise which reminded me of the Caribbean waters. I turned on some Calypso and Reggae and started painting!
This sideboard was purchased for my own home many years ago. When I brought it home, I primed it and then didn’t finish the job. I’m happy I was finally inspired to give it the attention it deserved.
The French Country details have been brought out with a custom turquoise HMCP. I glazed it with dark grey/black and then distressed so white highlights show through. It’s sealed with a wax finish and buffed to a soft sheen. This technique gives the piece a lot of texture and dimension yet the surface is smooth as silk!
Are you ready for some fun in the sun too?
Enjoy your day! x
what is the difference between glazing and the dark was on?
Cindy, my apologies… I’m not sure I understand your question?
How did you get the white to bleed through on this piece?
It was originally painted with the white primer Misty. After I painted on the color and glaze; the smaller areas I hand sanded just enough to start showing the white. On the large open surfaces I did the same but used my DeWalt Sander with fine 220 grit sandpaper. This gave the piece a silky smooth finish and a very textured look.
So, I’m new to all this distressing furniture stuff. Lol
So, in this pic you painted the turquoise in FIRST, second you applied the grey/black wax, THIRD, you sanded it to get the distressed look???
Brilliant that you’re asking questions Misty! And starting to learn how to paint furniture by creating distressed pieces is actually a great place to start because it takes some pressure off…the goal is to have a finished piece that appears worn, aged and has a story to tell!
1. The piece was already primed. 2.I painted it with the Custom HMCP. 3.I applied the grey/black glaze. 4. Sanded/Distressed 5.Sealed and Buffed with clear wax topcoat. And if you have any more questions…ask away! 🙂
Thank You, Thank You Thank you! What a terrific website. I am so pleased I found you, your helpful information is so valuable and helpful. Kudo’s to you!

Denise – I love this! The color and texture – don’t you just love it when you distress and all that goodness appears?! Great job!
