THIS SALVAGED FRUIT BOX GETS A NEW PURPOSE FOR THE HOLIDAYS **GIVEAWAY ALERT**| YOUTUBE VIDEO

Hi creative friends and welcome back. Today I’m sharing a vintage fruit box turned Christmas Storage Box using some gorgeous NEW RELEASE holiday decoupage papers. Working on this project put me in the holiday spirit and I can’t wait to hear your thoughts about this restyled fruit box!
I’m also joining five super-talented bloggers for a DIXIE BELLE GIVEAWAY FOR YOU!!! A BIG thank you to Dixie Belle Paint Company for sponsoring today’s post!
Here’s the vintage fruit box I started with. This was salvaged from the trash but I just couldn’t leave it there. If this box could talk, it would probably have some fruity stories to tell. Here in Ontario, we have some spectacular peaches – maybe not quite like Georgia peaches… but I’d say pretty darn close! 😉
The wood boards and nails holding it together look so old.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED
Vintage Fruit Box – SALVAGED
Shop Towels | Sanding Sponge
White Lightning Cleaner
Painters Tool | Carbide Scraper
Oscillating Cutting Tool
Titebond Glue
Woodubend Applique
Sequoia Silk All-All-In-One Mineral Paint
Holiday Holly Decoupage Paper
Satin Clear Coat
Brown Wax
DECOUPAGED VINTAGE BOX
Let’s turn this ol’ box into a magic holiday box…
PREP
To prep this box for a seasonal makeover I removed the last of the peach sticker on the side. I used my painters’ tool to scrape off the sticker and for the parts that didn’t want to budge, I used this carbide scraper.
I used an oscillating tool with a wood blade to straighten the front board.
HOLIDAY HOLLY DECOUPAGE PAPER
Now for the fun part! I chose to decorate this box with this Holiday Holly Decoupage Rice Paper.
It includes three complimentary sheets per package that can be used individually OR together.
To apply the decoupage paper is so easy.
- Cut off the trim and decide where you want to place it.
- Brush on a layer of clear coat.
- Place the decoupage paper on top of the wet clear coat.
- Brush the topcoat on top of the decoupage paper and let dry.
For the paper hanging over the edge, I use a piece of sandpaper of a wood block and sand it off. I’m sharing how easy this is in the Youtube video below.
To add a large focal point to the front of the box I painted a wood applique in Sequoia Red.
Then I glued it on with this Titebond Wood Glue. Clamps kept it in place while drying.
ANTIQUE WITH WAX
To antique this vintage box, I used brown wax over the wood applique. I also added a little brown wax to the edges and sides right on top of the decoupage paper.

FINISHED VINTAGE CHRISTMAS BOX
Here’s the finished vintage holiday look…
The wax helped with the antique look.
This box is fun for Christmas decor and it will also be a great box to store my Christmas bows in AFTER Christmas!
And here’s a closer look at the wood applique.
And the checkered side.
I was torn between painting the applique green or red but I ended up going with the vintage red for a pop. What do you think?

Oooh, I wonder how tricky it would be to do this with a wooden box that has gaps between the slats!
Wonderful idea, thanks for sharing! ❤️
I would love to make over a box like this.
I do like the red and I just love old wood boxes of any kind. Good job on this one to make it a bit of Christmas cheer.
What a cute and simple project! I have a small office organizer with drawers that would be perfect to try using DB’s decoupage papers.
I want to try the tote and use it for Christmas. It would then become a homemade decoration to pass down in the future. Thanks for the inspiration.
Great looking box! Can’t wait to start decorating for Christmas- just wish it wouldn’t be almost 80 degrees in November in eastern PA…
What a transformation! Such inspiration!
I like how you evened out the broken side. It does look vintagey for sure. Thank you for the opportunity to win the $200.00 credit. I’d love to do some mirrors and picture frames I have been hoarding!
