CLEAN AND SAND THE BANANA HOLDER

I removed the price tag and started by giving this banana holder a good cleaning and a light scuff sanding with a 220-grit sanding sponge. I also made sure that the top hook was nice and secure.

PAINT WASH AND SEAL THE WOOD

If your holder already has a pretty wood finish, you may only need to clean it. To get the darker, aged look I wanted, I mixed some Coffee Bean Chalk Mineral Paint with some water to create a paint wash.

Using an inexpensive chip brush and working in sections, I brushed on the paint wash and wiped back the excess to reveal some of the grain. To soften the look, I lightly brushed with the soft bristles of a dry brush. Then I let the holder dry.

Once it was 100% dry (and it takes less than 2 hours with chalk paint), I used this Easy Peasy Spray Wax to protect and seal the paint finish. This spray wax gets sprayed on and wiped off, and leaves a natural matte finish.

ADDING A POT + PLANT

I bought a small fern from HomeDepot and divided it in half to fit my mini pot. I planted it in the pot and gave it a little water.

ADDING THE HANGER

I purchased a few of these macrame plant hangers online.  They are super inexpensive and often come in packs of 3. To make it fit this small plant hanger and pot, I cut it down to size. The trick was getting it to hang off the hook so after it was cut, I ended up using hair ties to secure the top and then added some hot glue so it won’t fray.

Sometimes the simplest DIYs spark the best ideas! I love a good furniture makeover, but there’s something so satisfying about a quick little project you can finish in an afternoon. It’s nice to leave room for both when creating!
