Hi everyone… and Happy Tuesday to you! I hope your week is off to a great start!
For today’s quick-tip, I’ll show you how I’ve been saving $$$ by using ‘off-the-shelf’ knobs and pulls and transforming them into one-of-a-kind jewels simply by applying a glaze.
Lately I’ve been stocking up on discounted furniture hardware. I’ve found some amazing deals at Hobby Lobby {who can beat their 50% off hardware sale?!} Pier 1, Marshall’s (yes Marshall’s!) and any place else that has hardware sale prices.
When I buy knobs and pulls, I look for a pleasing size and shape in a material and style I really like… but it really doesn’t matter what color they are!
Hardware can always be painted or glazed to compliment any salvaged piece.
Here’s a great example.
These pulls are super charming as is…
To take them up a notch and customize them for this desk I’m working on, I glazed them black. I added black paint to Behr Faux Glaze. Brushed on and then wiped off. So simple.
Now that they’re glazed, these pulls are gorgeous. They are unique and one-of-a-kind {rather than off-the-shelf} and they’re perfectly tailored for my painted desk that I’ll be posting for you later this week.
So if you ever come across sale priced knobs and pulls but you’re unsure of the color, grab them anyway! This will save you some $$$ and you can always create gorgeous customized hardware by glazing your knobs and pulls for your painted furniture!
Have any questions on glazing knobs and pulls? Or maybe you have your own secret on how to turn hum-drum knobs into one-of-a-kind jewels? Chime in because I always love hearing from you! 🙂
You can catch last weeks Q-T-T here and I hope you join me for when I reveal this desk with it’s new glazed pulls!
If YOU have any ideas or tips you would like to share on the SI Quick-Tip-Tuesday-Series, feel free to send me an email.
Enjoy your day,
Denise x

I would like to add a rub through finish to my kitchen drawer pulls. I got them at a flea market in Canton Texas. They are really gorgeous and only $1.25 apiece. Simpler/cheaper pulls of the same style run almost $5.00 each at the big box DIY stores.
They are currently unfinished silver color. Any suggestions on what products I should use for the base coat and rub through?
Great deal and so much fun to customize Carol! You didn’t mention what color finish but you can give the pulls a light sanding then spray in rubbed bronze spray paint (just as an eg.) and then use gold Rub & Buff to create the rub through finish. You can also achieve a rub through using 2 layers of paint. I always topcoat my customized hardware with Minwax Poly Wipe-On for extra durability.
Rub-n-buff is great and so is Metallic Lustre by Deco Art in Silver Spark. It is a metallic wax and it was gorgeous on a Bombe chest that I painted a Tiffany Blue and then changed the handles from brass to Silver metallic. Also used the wax over the blue of the Chest, my kids said it looked like “Cinderella”.
I, too, change the color of hardware using spray paint and rub-n-buff. Very quick, easy and stands up to use.
I haven’t tried Rub-n-Buff – but I’d love to. I’ve heard really good things about that product and I believe it comes in a variety of colors right?
Denise I thought Hobby Lobby was only in the US. Where is the canadian store located?
That’s right Carole… only cross border. It’s a great excuse for Andrea and I to hop in the car for a day trip or for an overnight getaway. LOVE Hobby Lobby and wish we had one around here!
it sure a great tip to customize and make it your own style! so, would you do the same with door knobs and handles? I will like to save some $$$ doing this versus replacing with new. I have the gold ones that are very shiny and sleek. probably need to sand it flat before painting. and also do all the hardware! thanks!
Thanks Lilly and YES, you can restyle door knobs and handles…I’ve seen some amazing transformations!
