HERE’S AN EASY AND ELEGANT WAY TO REFRESH YOUR OLD PIECES WITH MINIMAL EFFORT | YOUTUBE VIDEO COMING THIS SATURDAY!
Hi creative friends! Winter has officially arrived here in the GTA, and it’s the strangest thing — the trees still have all their leaves in gorgeous fall colors, but now they’re weighed down with snow! We had our first snowfall on Sunday, and with temps dipping to -3°C, it’s been the perfect time to stay cozy indoors and work on furniture projects. So today, I’m sharing this beginner-friendly marble plant stand makeover. Here’s an easy and elegant way to refresh your old pieces with minimal effort.

It’s also the second Tuesday of the month, and this means it’s Trashy Treasures Tuesday! I’m looking forward to seeing what our TTT crew, Christy at Confessions Of A Serial DIY’er and Nancy at Artsy Chicks Rule, have created. I hope you join me on today’s tour as well! I’ve included their before-and-after links down below.
Here’s the marble plant stand I started with. This is another piece from my neighbour Sue’s haul – thank you, Sue! You can see the other two makeovers from this haul here and here.
The marble on top is in perfect shape. The base of this plant stand has been painted white with some gold highlighting.
The paint was chipping and cracking, but seeing how old this piece is, it looked like it held up really well.

MARBLE PLANT STAND RESTYLE
Here’s how this beginner restyle all came together. And can I just say that paint is AWESOME. I’ve been doing this for years, and I’m still amazed at what a coat of paint can do for an old piece of furniture!
CLEAN & PREP
I started by giving this plant stand a thorough cleaning with my heavy-duty furniture cleaner. For the spindles, I also used a dollar store brush to get into all the grooves.
Once the piece was clean and dry, I brought it into my sanding room and used a sanding sponge to scuff sand the entire base. These sanding sponges are perfect for spindles because they flex and wrap smoothly around the curves. And you don’t have to sand the old paint off; sanding just enough to scuff the surface to give the new paint something to cling onto is all it needs.
PAINT IN CUSTOM COLOR
I wanted a gray base to bring out the gorgeous marble vein (Mother Nature’s artwork) in this top, but I wasn’t sure what tone of grey paint would do the trick. I brought out a few samples and laid them down beside the marble. From left to right, Wharf had green undertones and the other two grays had baby blue undertones. I didn’t like any of the grey paint colors I had on hand to match this marble top. So the next best thing was to create my own custom gray.
I grabbed this Black Sands and Whitecap and mixed up a perfect grey for the base of this piece. I didn’t measure. I poured the Whitecap into the Black Sands until it looked like a close match. Then gave this custom gray paint color a good mixing before I started to paint.
PAINTING THE BASE
I flipped the stand onto a soft towel and grabbed my 2″ mini angle brush. This is my go-to brush for cutting into smaller areas like the lip of this marble. It works really well and if you have a half-decent, steady hand, there’s no need to mask off with painters’ tape.
PAINTING THE SPINDLES
To get NO BRUSH MARKS when painting spindles, I use my slap-it-on-paint technique. I add very little paint to the tip of the paint brush, and then slap the bristles side to side to spread the paint evenly on the circumference of the spindles. This technique works really well for a smooth finish and I find it fun to do. I have a full tutorial on this paint technique here.
TOPCOAT AND PROTECT
The Silk All-In-One Mineral Paint doesn’t require a topcoat because it’s included in the formula. However, I wanted a little more sheen to the base as it was looking a little too matte in comparison to the marble top. I used Big Mama’s Butta furniture salve. I put it on with a large brush and wiped it back with a soft lint free cloth. For extra buffing, I wrap it around the spindle, hold onto each end of the rag and buff away!
THE BIG REVEAL
Here’s the finished look. Such a simple makeover that made such a difference!
The gorgeous marble top paired with the custom gray paint is simple and elegant!
And below is a magnified image of the paint finish. I wanted to zoom in as close as I could so you can see how beautifully the paint gets applied with the slap-it-on paint technique. Looking at the table as a whole, the spindles look smooth as silk!

Here’s another look at this before-and-after trash-bound Marble Plant Stand makeover. I hope it inspires you and sparks ideas for your upcoming projects.
It’s pretty amazing what a single paint color can do, isn’t it? One color choice has the power to completely transform a tired, dated piece into something beautiful and elegant. And the best part is, if you don’t have the perfect color, you can custom make one! This was a wonderful reminder that with a little time (this took less than 2 hours minus dry time!) and a vision, even the simplest change—like choosing a new paint color—can make all the difference in updating your furniture!
Thanks for joining today’s TTT makeover. Feel free to drop me a hello and let me know what you think of this marble plantstand’s ‘NEW’ look. I always love hearing from you.
Happy painting, my friends!

So simple but the perfect update for this little beauty!! xoxo
Thanks so much my friend! Have a fabulous weekend. XOXO
Way better!!
What is the purpose of the half spindle in the middle bottom? I would’ve removed it.
Thanks Jeanne!😀 And I don’t think it was meant to have a purpose other than being decorative.
Wow. Such a simple (looking) update. But now she is striking and elegant.
You mixed a perfect grey !!
I just love small deco tables – esp older ones. I would definitely keep this one !
I’d love to try your slap it spindle technique. It does look fun. And the finish looks so perfect.
Love it !!
It is FUN…and works sooo well! I’m so glad you like the finished look and I agree, I love these older decor tables. I brought my fern plants in for the winter so I may keep this to display one of my ferns. The trick is to keep the fern alive over the winter though 😄… I always have a hard time with them. Have a great week!
Definitely, less is more, and you were victorious with this! It looks great.
Thanks Catherine! Super easy and I’m super grateful to my neighbour for hooking me up with these great pieces. Have an awesome week!
Very classy!
Thanks my friend! XOXO
Lovely, Denise! The soft gray made it sleek again! XOXO
Thanks my friend! And this neutral gray will easily go into any space. Win, win! 🙂
This dark base on the plant stand looks upscale Denise! The paint matches beautifully!
