This French Provincial Table gets a NEW look using French Villa SILK All-In-One Mineral Paint | Youtube Video
Hi creative SI family! Can you believe this adorable desk/table was headed for the curb? I never would have found it if it weren’t for my wonderful neighbor, Sue. She asked me if I might be interested in taking a look at a few pieces after a relative had passed. They were clearing out her cousin’s mum’s home, and it’s always sad in these situations. But I like to think giving furniture a fresh new look is a way of honoring its story. When I spotted this gem, I knew it still had so much life left in it. I tried out a brand new paint color called French Villa and added a little something extra to create a French-inspired makeover. I’m so excited to share this makeover with you—and I can’t wait to hear what you think of the finish!

Here’s my neighbor Sue and a few of the pieces we cleared out from the home.
This French provincial table was in great shape. As soon as I saw it, it was my favorite piece of the bunch.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED
French Provincial Table – SALVAGED
White Lightning Cleaner
Sanding Sponge
WoodUbend Appliqué (25% OFF as of writing!)
Heat Gun
French Villa Silk All-In-One Mineral Paint
Antique Gold Gilding Wax
FRENCH VILLA TABLE
Here’s how it all came together…
CLEAN & PREP
The first step in this makeover was to remove the hardware and the drawer, then clean it thoroughly with a heavy-duty furniture cleaner. When using TSP or a TSP substitute, I like to wipe off the residue with a clean damp sponge before letting the piece dry.
SCUFF SAND
To give this table a light scuff sanding, I used a 180-grit sanding sponge. Sanding sponges are awesome for curvy furniture because they contour so nicely, but on the YouTube video at the end of this post, I’ll demo how a plain ol’ piece of sandpaper works just as well!
APPLYING WOODUBEND
To fancy up this French provincial table, I used a classic Woodubend design. The designs glue on with regular wood glue and are very easy to apply. You can bend it. Cut it. Paint it. Gild it. Gold leaf it. And DRILL it! I used a piece of a design to fancy up the front drawer. I drilled a small hole in the center of the design to attach some hardware.
Here’s how I applied it..
- Pick your Woodubend Design and decide where you’d like to place it.
- Heat the Woodubend with a heat gun or hair dryer.
- Add wood glue and press in place (or use clamps).
- Heat the Woodubend with a heat gun once again to adhere.
There are so many gorgeous designs, large and small for any type of project. If you’d like to see how easy these appliques are to glue on, I have a full Woodubend tutorial here. Also, it’s a great time to grab a few because as of writing this post, Woodubend is 25% off selected designs here!
PAINTING FRENCH VILLA
Have you ever looked right at a label and just read what you wanted to read? When I first saw this paint color, I thought it was named French Vanilla. Only while painting my SECOND coat, I saw it was French VILLA! Either way, it’s a beautiful, sophisticated neutral. The primer and topcoat are included in this all-in-one formula, so it’s a win-win and a huge time saver.
This table took two coats of paint for full coverage with a super light sanding inbetween coats. I also like flipping my pieces (when small enough and I’m able) to paint the underside.
ANTIQUE GOLD GILDING WAX
Here’s where the chic French finish happens. Once the two coats of French Villa were dry, I brought out a stenciling brush + artist’s brush and applied gilding wax to detail this table. Very little wax is needed. I dabbed my brush to get the tiniest amount on the ends of the bristles and then painted it on. If I’m using the correct size brush, I don’t feel the need to mask anything off. I hit the edges at an angle and use the rim to guide my brush in a straight line. I’m sharing this technique in the Youtube video below. It saves so much time rather than using painter’s tape to mask everything off.
HARDWARE
To finish this table, I found an old antiqued knob that I had saved off an old piece years ago. This knob blended perfectly with the Woodubend Design and the gilding wax. The pairing was perfect and its so easy to drill a hole through Woodubend designs. Also, you may notice I started applying dark wax to give the wood applique some more depth. In the end I decided to wipe it all back because I preferred the look without.
THE BIG REVEAL
Here’s the finished look…
The old knob I salvaged off another dresser did a perfect job at blending in with the gilded Woodubend. It looks all one piece!
Such a beautiful, smooth finish, and it saves me so much time having the topcoat included.
I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on this table’s French-inspired look!
And just for fun, here’s how AI staged and styled this table! It looks beautiful!

This would make a gorgeous makeup/vanity if a mirror were hung on the wall above it. It would also make a beautiful small desk for a guest room. I can see this in a lot of rooms and it would be stunning everywhere. Wonderful job!
Aw, thanks Victoria! And I love your vanity and desk idea! 🙂
I love the French Villa Vanilla. 😂 Oh my goodness, I’m so glad it wasn’t just me that read it wrong. Thanks for straightening me out. It is a lovely neutral and the table is a real showstopper now. Gorgeous makeover with the gold accents, my friend. Pinned! xo 😘
It looks like it could be a French Vanilla!😆 Thanks for the PIN my friend and have a super duper week! Hugs
The before pic – with it all being 1 color – the back piece makes it look like it has wings.
The gold gilded edges gives it a defined shape.
LOVE those beautiful curvy legs. So elegant now. The color is beautiful.
I love seeing how you use the woodUbend. Someday… I’ll find a use for some It adds so much character.
The knob is Perfect.. I’m sure this will find a special home 🙂
Obviously your neighbor Sue knew the exact right person for all those pieces.
awww, thanks P! I’m grateful to Sue for thinking of me for sure! And yes, that beautiful back piece and those long curvy legs, right!?! 😃🦵😃
It’s beautiful. What a great save!
Thanks Lizzy! It was really sweet of Sue to think of me… I have the BEST neighbours! 🙂
I love how this turned out so much! I have a small entry way table that I’ve been trying to figure out how to refinish and I think you finally gave me the inspiration I’ve been looking for! I love how neutral the color French Villa is, but it still looks so elegant. Thanks so much for sharing!
Thanks Alex, I’m loving this French Villa neutral too!
Love everything you did! Really like the color, and all accents. Beautiful job!
Thanks so much Jewels! It’s always fun trying new paint colors! 🤗
So regal looking now, Denise! Just beautiful. Glad it didn’t make it to the curb! xoxo
Thanks so much Nancy! I’m so happy I got to work on this one as well.
I love love this table. Are you keeping it?
This came out beautiful!
So happy you like it Maryann!😊 I will be selling it.
Hi Denise. Gorgeous makeover. I love the French Villa color.
Thanks Monique! I love this French Villa as well. 🙂
From boring to a really sweet little table. I’m so impressed that you found a knob that actually works with the WUB AND the piece itself. Good job, Denise! So now it’s perfect and able to make someone very happy to display it.
The knob was almost an exact match! I touched it up with the tiniest bit of antique gold gilding wax but it barely need it… lucky find! Have a great week! XOXO
This french provincial table is a perfect fit for a contryside french villa now. Beautiful work as always!
Thanks so much Nicki! Too bad I didn’t have a french country villa to display it in.😜
This is absolutely stunning, Denise!! What a great little haul you got from Sue…love this unique piece especially, and the mouldings along with the gold wax and this dreamy color just put it over the top! XOXO
Yay thanks my friend! And yes, so many GREAT pieces. It was super kind of Sue to think of me! 💙💙💙
Beautiful! A fresh look for “French provincial.”
Yes, its a new take on an already good looking table. Thanks Cyndi!
The French provincial table transformation is a knock your socks off creation. The table before was attractive but now with the additional embellishments is drool worthy. That was such a great score. I live in the woods so my neighbors the deer and raccoons are not so forthcoming. Have a splendid day. ❣️
ohh, thank you Katrina, so glad you like it! As soon as I saw this table I knew it was the one I wanted to start working on. It was a fun makeover. Enjoy your sweet furry neighbours – sounds relaxing and so lovely! 💙🦌🦝
Ooh, I love this piece! It is beautiful and your added embellishments are perfect. J
I’m addicted to that WoodUbend 🤣… thanks Janice!
It looks beautiful, love the colour, btw I also read it as French Vanilla, amazing what tricks our eyes can do :)). xx
Right!?! I’m glad I’m not the only one. I really thought it was French Vanilla the entire time I was using it. Only half way through the second coat I realized what the label said, too funny! And ya, I love this soft neutral color as well. It would go with anything. XOXO
