A few weeks back, I picked up these 2 decorative cylinder-things from a Thrift Store. I knew they’d look great in my restyled bathroom, but I had NO idea what to do with them… or even what they were originally used for. With all this beautiful detail, I’m guessing they were some kind of chandelier light cover.
When I posted them on Facebook, you guys came came up with some great ideas. A few of you suggested towel holders, toilet paper caddy, chandelier and/or candle holders. Thanks everyone – I always appreciate your input! {big smile}
I’ve turned my thrift find into DIY Floating Wall Candles.
{Just a little update on my bathroom. Not much progress has taken place with this makeover over the last 2 weeks. Instead I focused on the website and painting furniture. So, this feels really good to get into it again. This small diy project took my sister Andrea and I all of 10 minutes but it brings me one step closer to completing my bathroom refresh. I can’t wait to show you when I’m finished!}
Supplies
- Decorative Cylinder (any decorative cylinder that already has holes – or you can drill holes IN will work!)
- Scissors
- Fishing Line
- Candles (for safety reasons I used faux battery operated candles with a timer)
- Drill & Screws for Hanging on Wall
We started by grabbing our supplies and then cutting a long piece of fishing line. Enough was cut to weave the invisible line in a criss-cross pattern through all the holes on the bottom of the cylinder. If you have a cylindrical object that has no holes to feed the line through, you could easily drill holes with a tiny drill bit.
We tied 2 secure figure-eight knots to start off the invisible shelf for the candle. Then we systematically criss-crossed through each hole making sure to keep the line taunt while going under and over each hole.
I drilled two small screws into the wall to hang this floating candle holder in the corner. The finished look is amazing! It really looks like the candle is hovering or floating on air! Now I’m off to hang the other one!
Feel free to chime in . . . I always love hearing from you!
Have a great day!

Im wondering how to know if the finish on a dresser is laminate? Or veneer? Thanks
Hi Sandy. Here’s an article I wrote on How To Tell The Difference between Veneer or Laminate.
I couldn’t wait to see what you were going to do with them !! I love that idea !!
Thanks Ann…I took your advice and hung them on the wall! It’s a different look and I like that… and the best part, super easy and fast project! π I installed the other one so when I post the full bathroom reveal, you’ll get the full effect. Have an amazing weekend! π
Awesome !! Love all you do ! Enjoy your weekend π
Thanks… and you too Ann!!! π
Denise, I knew you had something amazing in mind for these beautiful cylinders … And you certainly didn’t let us down. They are beautiful!! And I totally agree, there is nothing more rewarding than a lingering soak by candlelight. I love the battery timer candles, no more wondering “did I blow them out”?
Great job!
Thanks Phoebes! π And I totally agree…with my memory lately, no burning down the house…lol. π
They are really lovely I wanted to ask you about the chalk paint you use I got a solid wood head board and foot board with carved details want to paint it cream colored and rub wax on it need your advice you always have such great ideas thanks cable holders are absolutely beautiful
Thanks Ellen! π As for your headboard, it sounds like a perfect candidate for a chalk paint finish with a dark wax to antique and bring out all that carved detail!
So creative! Looks beautiful Denise π
Thanks Josie! I’m pretty pleased with how they turned out. π
What a creative idea. And using battery operated candles is brilliant…and safe.
Thanks Monique! I’m loving these battery operated candles! I just bought a large package of tea candles and two larger ones for my l/r. Perfect because they give a really nice glow and I can forget about them! π Anyway, these are going to set the mood whenever I find the time to take a long hot soak in my tub. π
