Hi guys, hope you’re doing well and thanks for joining me today. I’ve been keeping busy going for long fall walks, sipping pumpkin lattes which is adding up to way more caffeine than I should be drinking, but hey, I’m indulging for now… and painting this Fall Style Furniture Makeover along with some pumpkins.
This ReStore Buffet is a stunning before and after and I can’t wait to share it with you! I give all the credit to these two paint colors I used – Dried Sage and Tea Rose. They blend perfectly and look ah-mazing together.
Here’s what I started with. This small but curvy buffet that I picked up from a ReStore Habitat for Humanity. How can you go wrong with all this delicious detail, right!
And here’s the after. You can see the Dried Sage and Tea Rose are soft and subtle, blend really well, yet create a gorgeous contrast. What do you think?

FALL STYLE FURNITURE MAKEOVER::
I get a lot of emails, comments, and questions on what paint colors layer and blend really well together. So, when I stumble upon a winning combo, I’ll be sure to share. Here’s the first coat of my new favorite…
Dried Sage + Tea Rose.
The top of this buffet required sanding to even out all the scratches so two coats of stain/bleedthrough blocking was applied. The entire piece was painted in two coats of Dried Sage and then blended on the highlights and details with the Tea Rose.
BLENDING PAINT::
For the blending, I used this spray mister which makes blending a breeze, and then soften the entire look while the paint was still wet with this large soft brush.
I’m in love with this soft muted green and pink combo. It really brings out the exquisite details on this buffet.
DISTRESSING PAINT::
To achieve the distressing on the buffet, I left a little of the original wood showing through as I was painting and then gave the piece a sanding before I applied the brown wax.
TOP COAT/PROTECTING PAINT::
The top has been protected with this durable waterproof top coat and then brown waxed overtop to match the body.
So, I’d love to hear what you think of this Fall Style Furniture Makeover and this color combo!

Hi Denise,
I absolutely adore this colour combination and ageing process. I am new to redecorating/refurbishing furniture, but am about to try with 2 antique pine pieces of furniture (wardrobe and dresser). I would like to use this colour combo and technique, but was wondering if you could guide me to one of your videos where I could learn more about how to do this look? Thank you in advance for your help. All the best, Caroline
so gorgeous! I love the blending. Can I ask though, from the pictures it was hard to tell where the brown wax ended up going. Is that what I’m seeing in the recesses of the raises parts? I tried putting Brown and wax on some other pieces and it just ends up looking so dirty!
Lo unico que te puedo decir es que te quedan preciosos tus muebles , los colores hermosos … meencantan Felicitaciones !!!
Muchas gracias Erika! Te agradezco que hayas venido! π
Denise, I love everything about your style. you are awesome! I have a simple server/buffet I just picked up. (wish I could show you) I love what you have done here. I’d like to try it using Navy. Any sug. on a great combo?
Thanks very much
I’d like to see it too …and I think your awesome Roseann! π Navy and gold, navy and white, navy and orange, navy and cream… omgosh…so many combos. It really depends on how subtle or bold you want to go. π
Denise, I picked my colors. Nautical, Dusty Blue, Cobblestone, Beau Blue and Black walnut antiquing glaze. Wish me luck.. I’m trying to find your step by step for this. do you have one for Fall Style Buffet make over. would love to get it. π
That color combo sounds amazing! Good luck but I don’t think you’ll need it. If you take it step by step, it’s an easy process.
Your work is so inspiring, this is a beautiful finished piece.
Thanks so much, Christina! π
Hi, these colors are absolutely gorgeous!!! I just got an antique dresser with lots of detail and deceided to try blending but havenβt decided which colors. Well You picked the colors for me and shared how you did it….now I am more confident doing it!!!.. You are truly inspirational!!! When I do this piece I will send you a picture…
Thank you sooo much for sharing.ππ¦
Julie
I would LOVE to see your blended antique dresser Julie! I know you’ll be really pleased with these colors – they are so complimentary! Have fun! π
STUNNING!!!!
This is gorgeous!! You find the ptrettiest furniture pieces!! XO
Thanks Christy! I wish I could find MORE like this…so fun to work on with all that detail. π
Absolutely beautiful Denise – I love this latest piece and wish I had it in our house!!! It looks and sounds as if all these techniques should be achievable by most of us and certainly by sharing them step by step you are giving us all fantastic help and tuition – but you obviously have a great deal of artistic flair – wish you had classes I could attend …. well maybe it is a long way for me to travel from Scotland!!
Hi Irene, thank YOU! Just like with anything, a little practice doesn’t hurt, but if I can do YOU can do it! And Scotland is one of the places I SO WANT to visit – so maybe one day I’ll be in your neck of the woods Irene. π XO
Another beautiful blended piece you’ve painted Denise. I would never have thought of those colors together but they are so gorgeous! You are so talented. I’m trying to learn to blend and my first attempt didn’t turn out very well. You inspire me to try again.
Thank you Debra π … and the water mister really makes a HUGE different if you haven’t tried that out yet. π
Beautiful color combination Denise!
Thank you Linda! xo
OH. MY. GOODNESS! Absolutely beautiful! I donβt care for some of the blended pieces but this one is so soft and elegant. Iβm afraid mine would be a hot mess but Iβm going to get the mister and give it a try.. I also have trouble with brown wax. Any hints?
Thanks Susan! π For this piece, I applied my dark wax it with a 3″ hard brush using painterly back and forth strokes. I put very little on the bristles – rubbed off the excess and then ‘paint’ it on. Then wiped down the piece. π
Oh my gosh, this is stunning. You are one incredibly talented lady. I love seeing your pieces. You are truly inspirational. You are doing exactly what you are meant to do. What talent, Thanks so much for sharing with the rest of us.
Penny
You just put a huge smile on my face. Thank you Penny. x
Beautiful! I am not a fan of blended paint because as you know if done well it is amazing and if not i is a disaster.but this could convert me. You have inspired me to actually try some blending.
Thanks so much, Laura! It’s a fun process to try. π
Blended to perfection, you picked perfect colors to blend. too. Love the subtlety of it. .
Thanks my friend. XO π … and good luck with your piece. Once you work on it again I’d love to hear how it all works out for you.
It is just stunning! I had all the faith that you would choose the right colors and WOW – did you ever!! Beautiful!
Aw, thanks Christi!!!! π I’ll be using these colors again real soon I’m sure. π
Looks like it was meant to be this color all along.. Beautiful!
Thanks Valerie Lynn! π
I’m in love with this buffet Denise! The subtle pink hues are perfectly executed to enhance all that detail! And I’m with Monique. I really enjoy and look forward to your creations every Monday. Thank you!
Thank YOU Nicki! And ya, I’m kind of in love with this color combo too. π
Hi Denise!
This has got to be one of the best projects yet! You did a beautiful job on this buffet, it is so soft and elegant. I just cant say enough! Keeping my fingers crossed that I will run across a piece with this much
character. Beautifully done!
Thanks Carli!!! It helps when a piece has so much character to work with, doesn’t it! It’s always a treat to find these types of pieces.
Denise, this is so, so beautiful! Your color combination is just perfect. You took a piece that most people would pass by and created a show stopper. Typically I am not a fan of the blended look, but your blend is just amazing. Have you made a video on this project or any other blending paint? Iβd love to review your method. Thanks for the inspiration.
Huge compliment…thanks Laura! π
Dried sage and tea rose look gorgeous together! Another beautiful makeover. I recently painted an old kitchen cupboard burgundy and black and spray painted the hardware with gilded brass. Not sure if it is such a winning combination! Thankyou for inspiring me.
Thanks Sue! π It sounds like a beautiful combination but isn’t it funny how you may ‘think’ it’s going to work – and then it doesn’t OR vice versa… that’s happened to me more than once.
The use of the hair spray mister is ingenious…can you post a tutorial on how u used it
Fantastic!
Dee
Hi Dee! Yes, the mister makes a HUGE difference. You might find this or this helpful. π
Hi Denise……OMG….its absolutely beautiful…I love it. You sure do find good stuff at the Thrift or Resale stores…I never see anything nearly that nice in my area but then I’m not out there looking very often. Good job and thanks for sharing all your wonderful tips with the “Denise Faithful Followers” out here in LaLa land. Lol
