LOOKING FOR AN EASY WAY TO PAINT LAMINATE? THIS PRIMER IS ONE OF THE BEST WAYS I KNOW HOW TO DO IT!
Happy Tuesday friends! I hope your week is off to a great start. I’m SO excited to share this Laminate Dresser Before & After with you! It’s also my birthday in 6 days – the BIG five-oh! To help me celebrate I have a surprise for YOU at the end of this post… a generous G*I*V*E*A*W*A*Y sponsored by Dixie Belle Paint Company!
But first, here’s the before and after of today’s makeover. This dresser’s been sitting in my inventory for 6+ years because painting laminate is not one of my favorite things to do. I’m always worried the paint won’t stick even if I do a ton of prep work.
What do you think of this Fern Woods ‘after’… isn’t she stunning!?!

SOURCE LIST
-
- Laminate Dresser – SALVAGED

- Paint Sprayer

- Set of Bun Feet
- Slick Stick Primer
- Cotton Chalk Mineral Paint
- Fern Woods Furniture Transfer (similar)

STEPS
I started by giving this piece a really good cleaning and then priming with Slick Stick. For any shiny slick surfaces such as Formica, laminates, countertops, tiles or glass, this DB Primer saves me a ton of time prep work.
After mixing it well, I pour it onto a paper plate and use this high-density foam roller to apply the first coat. No sanding required… it just needs to be clean! I wait 2-3 hours and apply a second coat and let that dry overnight.
The next day, I do a scratch test with my nail to make sure it’s adhered 100%. Once it passes the scratch test, it’s ready for paint! If it doesn’t pass the scratch test, it requires more time to cure.
After this dresser was cleaned and primed, I sprayed two coats of cotton.
DB paint sprays beautifully but it does need thinning with about 10-15% water. I use my Husky + Compressor to spray however, I’ve heard this home sprayer is easy to use and cost-effective as well. If any of you have tried, I’d love to hear how you like it!
For the finishing touches, I added Fern Woods furniture transfer. Love this design because you can make it original to each piece by placing the design any which way you like!
These furniture transfers can be rubbed on and left as is, or what I like to do is give them a light sanding so some of the original paint finish shows through.
For the finishing touches on this dresser, I sprayed two coats of this clear finish in flat.
What do you think?

Hi Denise,
This looks beautiful! It would look so awesome in a sunroom with lots of plants!! I hadn’t seen this one before. I’m curious if you’ve used Fusion paints- Ultra grip product. It’s sounds like Dixie Bells- Slick stick is a comparable product. Have you had a chance to use and compare the two? I’d be interested to know what you thought of Ultra grip and if it’s better/same/worse than DB’s slick stick. Thanks!
Neetu
I have used Fusion and love their paint. But I have never tried Fusion’s Ultra Grip product so unfortunately, I can’t compare. That said, Fusion has amazing products with an amazing reputation as does DB so I’d guess they are pretty comparable. 🙂 If anyone reading this has used the Ultra Grip, feel free to chime in!
Oh! Woooowwww. I just love how crisp this looks…
I really want to try Dixie bell soon.
I’m doing laminate end table now hope it looks this good.
Beautiful transformation! Thank you for the great tips!
Lovely, just like you. Happy Birthday my friend, looks like it’s 50 for bit of us this year wow 💕🎂🍷
Yesssss can you believe it!?! It wasn’t that long ago we were dancing and partying till the wee hours.;) I couldn’t do that anymore even if I tried LOL. Wishing you a very happy 50th next month and thanks so much, Teresa. Miss you. XOXO
Much better. Amazing what paint can do.
This is an amazing before and after! By far one of my favorites! I too, like several other followers have a laminate bedroom set (headboard & two nightstands) that are waiting for a magical transformation and this has inspired me. I also love the knobs and pulls you put on the dresser.
Happy birthday! Life is always challenging and the experience and wisdom of age often makes it better as time goes on! Enjoy!
Beautiful as always!
Thanks so much Lynda! And good luck to you!! xo

I have really enjoyed reading about and seeing all the pieces you refinish, you have been blessed with talent for making the ugly look beautiful!
I love the tip about sanding the transfers.
Happy Birthday! Isn’t it rewarding to save a piece that no one else can see the potential in? Beautiful job, as always!
It sure is and thanks so much for the bday wishes Monique! x

The dresser is stunning! I just got a set of laminate furniture so this is so timely for me, thank you.
When I saw the “before”, I thought “Heck, no. I’d never buy that.” Followed by jaw drop when I saw your “after”. Stunning transformation!
Beautiful transformation. When something turns out so amazing don’t you sometimes wonder why it took so long to make the jump into the project. The fern transfers are perfect for that piece and I really like that you added the feet.
Awesome makeover! Thanks for your blog, as always inspirational! And I love Dixie Belle products!
WoW! That is so light and airy..I love it. I am a fern lover too

Love your blog! Would love to win!!
Thanks Sian and best of luck to you! xo
I thank you for your answer to my last question. It saves me a lot of guess work on the piece I am trying to finish up. But I do have another question! And without the help of a pro like you, I would almost certainly do it wrong… Slick Stick and Boss…. Would there ever be a need for both on the same piece? Or would the Slick Stick serve as the primer if it is being used? Thank you again for all of your help and well wishes, and thank you to the amazing #dixiebellepaintcompany for giving us chances to win their one of a kind products. Here’s hoping!
You really have a talent for envisioning something beautiful in something so horrid, LOL. Incredible makeover! Love the feet & pulls..
Thanks, Tracy! I must have seen something in this one that no one else did because I was seriously surprised at how many “UGLY” comments there were…LOL
Love this!!! It is beautiful and thank you for sharing.
Your before and after is one of my top 5 picks ever. Amazing job well done!
