LOOKING FOR AN EASY WAY TO PAINT LAMINATE? THIS PRIMER IS ONE OF THE BEST WAYS I KNOW HOW TO DO IT!
Happy Tuesday friends! I hope your week is off to a great start. I’m SO excited to share this Laminate Dresser Before & After with you! It’s also my birthday in 6 days – the BIG five-oh! To help me celebrate I have a surprise for YOU at the end of this post… a generous G*I*V*E*A*W*A*Y sponsored by Dixie Belle Paint Company!
But first, here’s the before and after of today’s makeover. This dresser’s been sitting in my inventory for 6+ years because painting laminate is not one of my favorite things to do. I’m always worried the paint won’t stick even if I do a ton of prep work.
What do you think of this Fern Woods ‘after’… isn’t she stunning!?!

SOURCE LIST
-
- Laminate Dresser – SALVAGED

- Paint Sprayer

- Set of Bun Feet
- Slick Stick Primer
- Cotton Chalk Mineral Paint
- Fern Woods Furniture Transfer (similar)

STEPS
I started by giving this piece a really good cleaning and then priming with Slick Stick. For any shiny slick surfaces such as Formica, laminates, countertops, tiles or glass, this DB Primer saves me a ton of time prep work.
After mixing it well, I pour it onto a paper plate and use this high-density foam roller to apply the first coat. No sanding required… it just needs to be clean! I wait 2-3 hours and apply a second coat and let that dry overnight.
The next day, I do a scratch test with my nail to make sure it’s adhered 100%. Once it passes the scratch test, it’s ready for paint! If it doesn’t pass the scratch test, it requires more time to cure.
After this dresser was cleaned and primed, I sprayed two coats of cotton.
DB paint sprays beautifully but it does need thinning with about 10-15% water. I use my Husky + Compressor to spray however, I’ve heard this home sprayer is easy to use and cost-effective as well. If any of you have tried, I’d love to hear how you like it!
For the finishing touches, I added Fern Woods furniture transfer. Love this design because you can make it original to each piece by placing the design any which way you like!
These furniture transfers can be rubbed on and left as is, or what I like to do is give them a light sanding so some of the original paint finish shows through.
For the finishing touches on this dresser, I sprayed two coats of this clear finish in flat.
What do you think?

Hello . There is nothing but beauty in this work..
Wow. What a transformation! Amazing!!! Hope I win some Dixie paint so I can make my projects look that good! 😁
This is the most incredible transformation I’ve ever seen. Gorgeous. Picked me up on a cold and dreary November day.
Aw, thanks, Nadine! XOXO
That is an amazing transformation on such an unattractive piece. Love it.!!!!
What a amazing transformation! I do have and use a Wagner home decor sprayer. You van spray a piece in 15 minutes. No more painting spindles on chairs with a brush, just spray them..onlyndraw back is itnises a lot more paintnyhan brushing or rolling. It’s a trade off save time use more paint, r brush and roll taking way more time but using less paint.
Happy 5-0!
Spraying is faster for sure and thanks for chiming in on the Wagner Jody! And for the bday wishes! XO Good luck to you.
WOW! What a transformation! She sure is ‘purty’ now!! Have an awesome birthday! Cheers to the next half a century 🥳
Thanks, Susan! XOXO
Thanks, Susan! XO
Happy early birthday 🎂!! I have used a home sprayer and liked it but you gotta keep your arm in motion while spraying! Those transfers are perfect on the white. I’m entering the giveaway again! Hope you don’t think I’m greedy! XOXO
Thanks Cecilia and thanks for participating and the bday wishes! XO Good luck to you! 🙂
Love the ferns!
I have been searching for a good way to get to paint coverage on laminated pieces. I’m going to check this out myself.
I have the Slick Stick and am planning to use it to paint marble top to a Bombay chest that was damaged, then repaired with Bondo filler. Will let you know how it comes out.
I’d love to hear how it works on the marble Verda!
Another great post! I always love your work
Love the ferns and greenery! Beautiful for any time of the year.
This is awesome! I love receiving emails from you! I have learned so much in the short time I’ve become such a fan of your work! Today’s project about how to paint laminate, was great! I’m in the process of fixing to redo laminate bedroom furniture! The pieces are very outdated, but they can be beautiful, providing they are painted the right way!! I have been so reluctant to start this project until Salvage Inspirations came into my life!! Thank you for walking us through the steps that it requires to redo furniture. Especially with all the right ingredients for all the different kinds of wood & paint! Now I’m ready to get my materials and turn these eyesores into a masterpiece!!! You’re so awesome!!
You’re awesome April! Have fun with your laminate bedroom set and I’d love to hear how it turns out for you! 🙂
Thanks for sharing!!
Thank you for the giveaway! Happy birthday too!!
You are one of my favorite painters! I’ve tried many of your paint techniques.
This is a beautiful piece!
Wow! This dresser is GORGEOUS! I always enjoy your makeovers. They never fail to be inspirational and informative. Thank you!!
LInda
I love this! The ferns are awesome. Happy early birthday
Thanks Lori! XOX
Looks great! Slick stick is definitely awesome for those slick surfaces! I used it on a formica top and bam! Beautiful!
You did a beautiful job on that ugly piece of furniture.
I need to get some slick stick. I painted a laminate piece and the paint came off!😩
Fabulous…I love your style!!
Very pretty, the legs go well as do the pulls.
Thanks, my friend! Good luck to you! XO
I do have and use Slick Stick and it makes wonders!
Oh my goodness – this is a great post for me! It is truly winter here now so I won’t be doing painting for many months… but we have my husband’s chest and dresser from the 1960’s that is all laminate. They are well made, dovetail drawers and in good condition. Just ugly!! I hope I can do this technique on them!
This is why Tuesdays are my favorite day. New blog post, new ideas, new INSPIRATION! Don’t normally love white painted furniture because typically it’s the same “shabby chic” look but this is fantastic! Fingers crossed for a chance to win the DB giveaway 🤞🤞🤞 That would be like a dream come true to an aspiring furniture artist like myself. One question…can you Gator Hide over Black Wax? I know typically “wax is last” but it just didn’t work out that way! Thank you again for all you share with us!
That’s so sweet of you Lindsay, thank you! And yes. Typically wax is last but with DB products they are interchangeable because they are both waterbased. 🙂 Good luck in the giveaway!
Hi there
How many sheets of Furn wood transfer did you need for this piece. I have a similar size piece and would love to do something similar
Hi Cleo! I used almost 5 sheets so I needed 2 tubes of this transfer. This dresser is 5 feet long though… really large!
I can’t wait to try Slick Stick. I’ve heard so many great things about it. Wonderful transformation!!!
Love the fact that you chose white and the transfer is very pretty.. When I saw the dresser my first reaction was this is not going to be worth any effort; it has ugly written all over it. Glad I was way off; it is actually pretty. You did good.
LOL… thanks Shirley. I wasn’t aware of just HOW UGLY this dresser was until you all started pointing it out on FB…lol
This has to be one of the most AMAZING transformations I have ever seen. I would never have believed that dresser could look so beautiful. Fantastic job!!
Thanks so much Gail! XOXO
Denise, First of all Happy Birthday! Five-0 is a good # and year!! I love this piece. I don’t think I have seen many projects you have “sprayed”. I’ve been thinking of trying it but haven’t gotten the nerve up!! The bun feet you added made a world of difference to the look;; so modern! Does Dixie Belle’s clest coat keep white paint from yellowing? I keep looking to you for inspiration!
Hi Jackie! Thank YOU!! And no yellowing for the topcoat. 🙂 Good luck to you! XOXO
Great tip for laminate surfaces! Thx!
