THIS THRIFT STORE KEY CABINET GETS A BRAND NEW LOOK WITH SOME PAINT AND FLORALS | YOUTUBE VIDEO
Hello creative SI family and welcome back to another Trashy Treasures Tuesday! My piece for today is this kind of sad yet cute-looking key cabinet I picked up from the thrift store. I know many of you are furniture painting pros and we also have a lot of creatives just starting on this furniture painting journey. This is an AMAZING build-your-confidence project because all the steps are the same as with a full-sized piece of furniture!
I can’t wait to see what my TTT crew has been up to. I’ll share links to their before and afters at the bottom of today’s post. I hope you join in too!

I found this Key Cabinet selling at the thrift store for 12.99 and it was 50% off.
It has cute hardware and has been well-loved.
It was a little beat up. But with an easy technique, we will make this beautiful again.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED
Key Cabinet – SALVAGED
White Lightning Cleaner
Paint Brushes
Cotton Chalk Mineral Paint
Florida Orange Chalk Mineral Paint
Ruby Rose Redesign By Prima Transfer
THRIFT KEY BOX MAKEOVER
Here’s how this key cabinet all came together…
DISASSEMBLING
I started by disassembling the door, glass, and all the hardware bits. Then I put them in a container so I didn’t lose anything.
CLEANING
I sprayed everything with White Lightning Cleaner and used a small sponge to wipe it down. Then I let it dry.
DESIGN
NOW for the FUN PART! I pulled some furniture transfer designs and different paint colors to see what look I wanted for this cabinet. I decided on this Ruby Rose Redesign With Prima Transfer paired with Florida Orange.
PAINTING
The base coat was painted in this pristine white called Cotton. I always have Cotton in my inventory because it’s a perfect white. It can also be used to cut into other colors to lighten and soften them up. This key box only required one coat because I planned on using the transfer over this base coat.
I also added a pop of color to the interior cabinet and the inside of the drawer in Florida Orange. Have you ever painted anything orange? This is the first time I’m using this color and it’s so cheery. I like testing new colors on smaller projects before painting a full piece of furniture.
ADDING THE FLORAL TRANSFER
Furniture transfers are another way to transform the look of your projects. I have a good stockpile of different designs. I keep all the leftover scraps so I can piece them together and make new designs.
Here are the steps …
- Pick a transfer design and cut it to size
- While the backing is still on – ‘play’ with the placement on your project
- Remove the backing
- Adhere it to your project
- Rub the transfer design with the applicator stick
- Remove the top plastic sheet once the design is adhered
- Topcoat with a water-based poly or wax if required
I have a full step-by-step tutorial on how to apply furniture transfers here.
ADDING BACK THE HARDWARE
After the florals were applied, I added back all the hardware. At this point, I could have waxed or used a water-based poly to topcoat, but I’ll be using this as a decorative piece so there is no need. If you were going to hang your keys on the pegs numerous times a day, I would recommend using a topcoat.
THE FINISHED LOOK
Here’s the finished look for this thrift store key cabinet!
I think it’s SUPER cute and I love how the florals play off the Florida Orange!
The pop of color in the drawer adds more fun.
And there is a little surprise in the drawer as well!
What do you think of these florals with the white and orange?
Super cute for keys and a hidy-spot drawer.

Thanks so much Cheri! So glad you love the look!
I love how the orange made the key decal on the glass stand out. I didn’t even notice in the before picture and had to scroll back up to check to see if it was there. I just love this vibrant transformation!
It wasn’t very visible against the white, but you’re so right, it really stands out against the orange! Thanks so much, I’m so happy you love it!
That is so pretty now, Denise! I always love when the flowers spill over the sides, love it! xo
Thanks so much Nancy!
Super, super cute!
Yay, thanks Ruth!!
I LOVE a pop of orange. It’s wonderful with blues, and green and yellow too. I’m not big on pinks…, but these shades are perfect together 🙂 I’m surprised you haven’t used it before. You always choose / create such happy colors.
I’m loving the color combos in this transfer. So glad you gave it a try.
I’ll admit I didn’t expect this darker orange shade to have turned out this fun.
Small cabinets are sooo adorable.
Thanks P!! Small cabinets are adorable and perfect for a build-your-confidence project for anyone just getting into furniture painting. And I LOVE the pop of orange too. I wasn’t sure I was going to but so happy I gave it a try!
This turned out so freaking cute! I LOVE how the pop of orange goes so well with the transfer! XOXO
Thanks my friend. I’m not sure why it took me so long to bust this color open!🤣
That is SOOO pretty! Pink and orange…one of my favorite combinations. 🙂
Thank you Cindi! I’ve never done pink and orange before but I’m loving it too!😃

I didn’t think I would like the orange either, but I do! It looks so cheery. Great job on this.
Same here Lizzy, lol!!! This Florida Orange has been sitting in my paint stash for probably over 6 months now…so happy I cracked it open!
I’m surprised I like the orange but I LOVE IT! This is gorgeous Denise! 🌸

Thank you Carla!
Love it, Denise!! I’m not usually a big fan of orange but the orange you used is gorgeous! Your transfer choice is wonderful, too. I especially love how you have the transfer wrap around and flow onto the clear door!!
I’m so happy you love it Robin! And ya, I’m surprised at how much I love this Florida Orange as well.😃
What a fun color revival! Great job, Denise.
Aw, thanks my friend. It was a fun project to work on! XOXO
Love it! Beautiful colors. The transfer is perfect with the orange!
Thanks so much Cheryl! 😊 I’m so happy I tried the orange.
What a gorgeous result! I would not have had the vision to use so many transfers, much less my Gator orange.
You balanced them perfectly.
I wasn’t sure about the orange either but I’m so happy I gave it a try. Thanks so much Janet!😊
