HOW I TRANSFORMED THIS SALVAGED VINTAGE RADIO CABINET WITH A BRIGHT AND BOLD COLOR COMBO!
Hi sweet #sifamily! It’s Furniture Fixer Upper day and I’m joining my FFU Crew for 5X the before and after FUN. If you’re new to the #siblog, I join these talented group of ladies on the 4th Thursday of the month. I’ll be sharing their makeovers and how-to-tutorials at the bottom of today’s post.
But first…
Check out this FREE curb-shopped Vintage Radio Cabinet. MMM found this piece in his parent’s neighborhood. I wish I knew the backstory. Someone had brushed it with white chalk paint and there was a little tag on the bottom leg. I’m guessing it was for sale at some point.
I LOVE working on curb-shopped salvaged finds. I feel I can indulge and try new colors, techniques or products — all without the worry of mucking it up. It’s fun to try things I might not otherwise try on pieces I’ve spent money on!
Like this bold pink and red combo! What do you think?

VINTAGE RADIO CABINET MAKEOVER
This old stereo cabinet required repair before painting. There were holes in the back, lifting veneer on the bottom and peeling paint all over.
Nick (aka MMM) did all the repairs on this one. He even helped shoot the DIY photography. I promised him photo credit like in the magazines. 😉
Nick cut a 1/4″ oak plywood to cover the back holes. When primed and painted, it blends in beautifully and you can’t even tell it’s there!
He also removed the veneer on the bottom of this cabinet and filled the holes/scratches to prep it for prime and paint.
Then it was my turn. I primed with my favorite B-I-N Shellac Based Primer.
Then I busted out my spray gun to make this cabinet bright and cheery. I sprayed 2 coats of this Peony Pink on the inside.
Then I sprayed 2 coats of this Honky Tonk Red on the outside.
I have to admit, with all that’s going on in the world, these colors managed to brightened my mood!
And I couldn’t help myself, friends. While I was styling — I had to add the toilet paper. 😊
And now for some FURNITURE FIXER UPPER FUN!
Our dear friend Marie has decided to step back from the tour but you can still visit her anytime at Interior Frugalista to keep up with her amazing DIY projects. 🙂 [Marie, if you’re reading this, I know RED is your fav… I thought of you during this makeover!]

Scrolling through some of your past posts and OMGOODNESS!!! That hot pink and red is PERFECT!!! Just says Happy and Fun!! Love this so much!!
Aw, thanks so much Karolyn! That’s exactly what I was going for. 🙂
Love, love, love the color combo!
Thanks Jolena! x
This is gorgeous. I love the Honky Tonk red. Where did you get it? Thanks.
Thanks Lori. I get my Honky Tonk Red here. 🙂
Beautiful, and the cheer we all can use! But, OMG, you got TOIlet paper!!! You hoarder, you!!! LOL. What a cheaky idea for staging! You are truly the Furniture Makeover Diva!!!!
LOL, believe me, Susan, if I hoarded as much toilet paper as I do old furniture… I’d be set!😁
Oh my goodness this is SO fun!!! Perfect to cheer up these doom and gloom days! Love the TO lol!! XOXO
Thanks, Christy! I hope you have a great weekend. Stay safe. XOXO
I gasped out loud when I saw this, Denise! Oh my word, it is stunning and yes, my absolute favorite color. The red and pink look so pretty together and of course your styling is gorgeous as always. Laughed out loud at the TP, good one! Miss you guys and thank you, sweet friend, for the shout out. xo
Thanks and miss you too! But no worries. I’ll be dropping by to see what you’re up to. You can’t get rid of me that easy…lol. 😉
Thanks for the laugh! First time TP has been used in staging a piece, I betcha! ❤️
LOL… maybe so! It might not get Pinned quite as much… but well worth it if it puts a smile everyone’s face. 😉
Denise that red is fabulous! Radio cabinets are hard to come by – I love working on them and I’m jelly that you got one from the curb! LOL. Beautiful work! xo
Thanks Jen, and ya, I don’t see too many of them in thrift stores or online. They’re super sweet to work on though! I’m going to drop by your site and search out the ones you’ve restyled. x
G/day Denise,My wife loved the wireless cabinet up grade, along with all the other projects we’ve marveled at since I joined your great site a while back.I’ probably have a slightly different background to most of your other readers,in so far as I’m a bricklayer by trade, and have spent my life doing that since the age of 14 (now almost 67) I always had a keen interest in creative outlets including artwork, woodwork ,mosaics, etc, etc,as well,,and love to pickup bits and pieces left over from our work sites, including rubbish timber, old tiles to recycle into something. useful.Anyway Denise,I look forward to seeing lots more of wonderful projects in the future..I find it quite inspiring to see your ongoing projects. Warm regards Terry.
Hi Terry! First, let me start by saying if you’ve spent 50+ years in that trade you’re being modest. You’re not just a bricklayer, you’re a MASTER Mason/Bricklayer!!! MMM is a contractor and always used his Polish Bricklayer (Roman) because his work is so impeccably gorgeous. That’s a real skill. Anyway, sounds like you and your wife are super creative and resourceful. I hope you drop in again and warm regards from Toronto. Stay safe.
I love the cabinet! I actually liked the white! 😬 However, the bright colors are very cheerful. I think it’s the perfect place to store/display folded up quilts! I think they would look so pretty in there.
PS: RE: the toilet paper – at least you got some, lol! 😂
lol… yes, so far we’re doing okay with our TP supply. 😉
Hi Susan! I agree. Quilts would look amazing displayed in here. x
SO FUN! Brightened a dreary day – it’s cloudy outside!! Didn’t notice a sealer; did you topcoat or wax?
Stay well!!
Hi Jackie! It’s a cloudy dreary day here too. I didn’t list a sealer because I haven’t sealed it yet. I’ve been spraying poly on most of my makeovers lately so that’s probably the finish it will get. 🙂
Oh, this really pops! I love the contrast with your milk glass pieces. Thank you for brightening my day with your creativity.
Thanks Carla! My sister has a HUGE milk glass collection that I dip into for some of my furniture stylings. Gorgeous pieces! Truth the told, some of her milk glass lives here now…lol. 😉
I love it Denise! IT is so Bright and Happy! Thank you for the smile. Can you send me some of your TP? I cant seem to find any anywhere. 🙂 Take care!
So glad it gave you a smile Cheryl. And if I had the TP to share, I’d send you all some. I’d be like Oprah — and YOU get some TP! — and YOU get some TP!…🤣
An amazing transformation! The color choice was so bold and it is awesome! Great job!!!
Thanks Maryellen! And yes, very bold. I must have needed some cheering up!😉
I love the bright and cheery new look. And the toilet paper made me laugh. 😂😂
Thanks, Kandice! Super bright and cheery, right!? I’m a little more adventurous with these curb shopped pieces.😄
i love the two subtle pops of different colors Denise! i’ve got to dig out my old radio cabinet and see what it looks like! thanks for the inspiration – always!
Thanks Gwen! And have fun with your radio cabinet… they’re a fun project! 🙂
That COLOR pops! I knew this would be an amazing makeover. Well done my friend. xo
It really POPS, doesn’t it? I’ve used Honky Tonk Red before but I’ve always dark waxed, glazed or washed… never au natural. It’s so cheery!
Hi Denise. This cabinet turned out bold and cheery. I NEVER would have thought to put pink and red together, and yet it works! Your styling (with the toilet rolls) made me smile. Thank you for the much needed lift.
I’m SO glad this makeover made you smile! Thanks Monique XOXO
Denise,
This Radio Cabinet transformation turned out so cute! The color combo’s were just darling.
Yes, in this bleak time in our countries history, it was a nice bright change & fun too!
Just love your website❣️
I’m so glad it brought a little cheer, Carli! We could all use some extra smiles. I hope you and yours are staying safe and healthy. XOXO
Denise, I giggled when I read about the TP! This cabinet would be great in my work/play house! I usually do everything in aqua but this mind be a game changer! Mr. MMM is a keeper!
Glad it gave you a giggle my friend. We could all use extra smiles these days. 🙂 And yes, MMM IS A KEEPER. I love him with all my heart. XOXO
That’s the cheeriest piece of furniture I’ve ever seen! It’s beautiful – I love the color combination, though I’m usually into more muted, earthy tones. But that is really cute – and the TP – inspired! 😀 Take care.
Aw, thanks Marcia and hope you’re taking good care too!!! It cheered my up while I was painting so I was hoping it would do the same for others. 🙂 The funny thing is I’m like you. I’m into muted beiges, whites and neutrals… that’s what my entire home is styled in. But for some reason when I paint furniture, my alter ego or ‘wild’ side comes out. LOL 😉
OMG! IT”S AWESOME!!!!!!!
Thanks so much Cheryl! x
