If you LOVE pattern and design, today’s round-up of inspiring furniture stencil ideas will get your creative juices flowing! Visiting each of these talented artists is a great reminder that stenciling pattern and design can be done in unique and unconventional ways. I hope you enjoy these makeovers as much as I do.
DRILLED OUT STENCIL PATTERN::
This dresser makeover from Kristine at the Painted Hive is amazing! You wouldn’t believe the ‘before’ was very plain. Kristine added new feet and then transferred a pattern onto 3mm plywood which was cut to the exact size of the original drawers. Then she created this gorgeous two-dimensional stencil design by drilling holes into the transferred design, staining the plywood and voila… I’m in love with this makeover!

SILHOUETTE CAMEO STENCIL::
Now here’s a fun furniture makeover from my friend Christy at Confessions of a Serial DIY’er. She teamed up with her 14-year-old son Jack to restyle a Salvation Army find. Together, they turned a plain dresser into this fun nautical-beach piece using paint and a Silhouette Cameo. I need to get me one of these! It allows you create any typography, font or image and it cuts out a perfect stencil for you.
PAINTERS TAPE STENCIL::
Now here is something we ALL have on hand. Tape! Yup, Mallory and Savannah at Classy Clutter created an original stencil design using ScotchBlue painters tape and some imagination. I love the way this Tribal Dresser Makeover uses a simple geometric pattern to draw focus to this otherwise plain looking piece. Just think how creative you can get with a roll of tape… the sky’s the limit!
PLASTIC OVERLAY STENCIL::
My creative gal pal and friend Marie at InteriorFugalista recently restyled this cute table {again} using plastic overlays. I’ve seen similar overlay designs at my local dollar store. They’re sometimes advertised as room dividers because they have little holes to attach each square together with metal loops, then hang, but I like Marie’s creative furniture stencil idea much better!
PYROGRAPHY (WOOD BURNING) STENCIL DESIGN::
A wood burning pen can create stunning designs. Just check out this intricately detailed tabletop from Matt and Mix at Port Rhombus Design! All this gorgeous eclectic bohemian goodness enhances the warmth of the walnut beautifully. A few months ago I bought my own wood burner pen but haven’t found the right wood project to use it on yet. I’ll be sure to share my first attempt when I do though. 🙂
PATTERNED PAINT ROLLER::
How beautiful is this? These patterned paint rollers come in all sorts of designs and would be fun to try on a furniture restyle! I love this dresser makeover over at Clare’s at The Painted House. These patterned paint rollers can be used on furniture, fabric, paper, walls… omgosh, almost anything you can think of really!
CUT YOUR OWN STENCIL::
A few years back, I transformed the back of this curb-shopped china cabinet with a DIY Stencil. I created a pattern on Photoshop (free photo editors will also work) and then transposed it onto a sheet of mylar. Using a dollar store craft knife, I cut out the design and started stenciling! You can see the full tutorial and makeover here… and after all these years, I still have that DIY stencil that I can reuse today. 🙂
I’m so glad you stopped by and I hope you enjoyed this roundup of inspiring furniture stencil ideas. It’s inspired ME to take a second look at some plain looking pieces and shower them with some stencil love.

What a great post! You learn something new everyday….know what I mean? Each one of these examples of stenciling is gorgeous. I fee like my brain is going to explode wondering which one to read about and then what to do; what to do! !
Thanks for bringing this post to my attention. So many ideas, so brain power! HA….xo
I know right! I want to try them all!!! ๐ ๐ ๐
Thanks so much for sharing my dresser with the drilled pattern ๐
Thanks so much for this amazing piece… LOVE it! ๐
Hi Denise ..Oh boy do I ever like the stencil that you show with the light beige paint and I think it is a brownish coloured stencil. I have never stenciled before but I have two four drawer dressers, one in the hallway and one the dining area (it is an open concept livingmdining and kitchen). They are painted a light muslin colour and I wondered what colour the light coloured drawers with the lovely pulls is. How do I get a pattern like that. Lots of questions I know but I am really anxious to do this. Can I buy a stencil like that???? Help Betty from Ontario Canada
I know, isn’t it gorgeous?! Clare at The Painted House has an Etsy Shop where she sells these stencil paint rollers. You can click here to link. She’s located in the UK so I’m not sure if she ships to Ontario and/or how much it would cost… but it may be worth reaching out to her see if she does! ๐
It was the China cabinet stencil that I was talking about. Stupid me I did not read it properly. You are so smart making your own stencil. I was a medical secretary and did not have to do anything like that. LOL. I will look up that link you mentionrf. Thanks a lot. …..Betty.
Oh, that’s MY stencil… I’m super flattered! ๐
Love what youโve done with stencils! I am so confused…lol! I have too many projects going to choose what I want to complete next but I know one of them will have a nice stencil. Thanks for the visions! You do lovely work!
Hi Shirley! Yes, I’m about to start my next piece and I’m confused too…lol. So much inspiration from all these talented furniture artists gets the creative wheels turning… but what a great ‘problem’ have, right?! Enjoy your projects and I’d love to hear back if you try one of these stencil ideas. ๐
Thank you so much, Denise, for including my Black Bird Stencil Table in your round-up ๐ Wow, such beautiful stenciled pieces and creative stencil alternatives. I’m in awe of the intricate wood burning on Port Rhombus Design’s table. I’ve also taken notes from your idea of making your own stencils. Like you, this gal needs a die cutting machine too!
Thanks for the inspirations and great idea Marie. ๐ ๐ ๐ I’m in awe of that Port Rhombus Design too. So intricate and gorgeous! And ya, I’d love one of those cutting machines. I think Cricut is another really good brand but I’m not sure if there are differences between the two.
,l THOUGHT l had finished a small dresser l was working on but now l realize it needs a stencil. Thanks for solving my problem with it looking a bit boring.Perfect timing,
Oh, I’m so glad this sparked an idea, Christine. Have fun with your dresser. ๐
Wow! These are so cool and inspiring!
