As a little girl, my first ‘grown-up’ furniture was a pure white French Provincial set. I remember feeling like a princess when we brought it home! It was beautiful and of such good quality I held onto that set for 30+ years. I took it with me when I bought my first condo and set it up in my spare bedroom. Needless to say, I have a soft spot for this curvy feminine furniture style. So if you love French Provincial Furniture as much as I do, you’ll love today’s post. Today I’m sharing 21+ GORGEOUS PAINTED FRENCH PROVINCIAL MAKEOVERS to update your old furniture! 🌸

Hi there! How do you get such a smoot paint coat without brush strokes? I’ve tried all kinds of different techniques but I still get very noticeable brush strokes on my furniture projects. I recently tried a mixture of Floetrol, Minwax Polycrylic top coat, water with my paint suggested by a person I follow on Instagram, Flying Dutchman Furniture. It didn’t work. I have very noticeable brush strokes. I tried to sand them off but it’s not working. Ugh! I’m planning to sell this cabinet but I worry the brush strokes will be a deal killer.
Hi Jai! Uggh, I know all too well that brush strokes can be frustrating. Here’s a few things I do. Quality paint brush OR maybe try a combo of brush and roll like I did here. I also thin thick paints with water, great idea. Apply thinner coats of paint and sand in-between. Work in a temp regulated room – not too hot or humid. I also find it helpful to use self-leveling paints. I like this one here. Hope one of these or a combo of helps!
Thank you for all your helpful tips! I’ll try them. Full disclosure, I think I may be putting my coats of paint on too thick. I do two coats of primer and two coats of paint. I don’t always sand between. I start out very meticulous but then get anxious to finish and start cutting corners. I’ll let you know how it goes on my next project 🙂
BTW… I love receiving your daily emails and looking at all your painting projects. Such amazing work!
Thank you!💙 And yes, I’d love to hear how it all turns out for you. 🙂
I sanded the cabinet doors yesterday to smooth the paint lines and then did another coat of paint but thinned it way down with water. The brush lines were much softer. I think my paint was too thick. I’ll email you a picture of the cabinet when it’s finished. I’m hoping to be done this weekend. I’m an amateur but have learned so much from all the professional painters, like you, that I follow. Thanks so much xxox
Thanks for sharing, I love everything FP!
Meee toooo! Thanks Nicki! XOXO
A very timely article for me as I just finished painting a French Provincial bed side table with Dixie Belle silk mineral paint. It’s a vast improvement, but still needs a little something. Thank you for the ideas. Denise, do you also paint the inside of the drawers?
Fun! What color did you paint it? For the drawers it depends. If they are clean and in good shape, no I don’t paint. If they are stained and won’t sand clean, yes I do. 🙂
Thx Denise. I used the color Whitecap, so it’s very basic. Nothing artistic like you do! I am thinking of highlighting some of the grooves with rose metallic paint, but that may take a steadier hand than I have.
You could always use painters tape to mask off and then go in with the rose metallic – I’ve done this plenty of times. But it may not need it Ruth. White is classic, timeless and elegant. Just my 2¢ 😊
I need a couple of the French Provential – Kathy PCJ, the ones for the drawers. I am missing 2. Where did she find these? I have looked everywhere.
Hey Karen! I featured 2 of Kathy’s French Provincvial Dresser makeovers, the whitewashed blue and the light cream. Are you referring to the more ornate handles on the cream FB dresser? I’ll check my stash to see if I have any similar. Also, if you click the link above Kathy’s image, it will bring you to her blog post and you can ask her direct as well. 🙂
