Back in the spring, I attended the Christie’s Antique Show and had the pleasure of meeting Pamela; the owner and founder of Bluestone Cottage Inc.
Update – This paint is now labeled under Bluestone House ™.
Visiting her booth was the highlight of my day…
Even though Pamela had a ton going on at her busy vendor’s booth {Christie’s gets over 10K shoppers and set up usually starts at 4am that morning!} she surprised me when she gave me an enthusiastic warm welcome and said she was an SI Blog follower!
Now, I couldn’t tell you exactly how our conversation developed from there, but Maya Angelou’s saying is so true….
At the end of the day, you may not remember exactly what someone said, but you’ll always remember how they made you feel.
Before I left the Bluestone Cottage booth, Pamela was kind enough to give me a few samples of her Chalky Patina Paints. Yes, one of the perks of being a blogger… free stuff! It’s taken me a while to crack this baby open and give it a try, but I’m SO GLAD I DID. Take a look at this gorgeous color and chalky finish!
This vintage dresser and mirror is restyled in Bluestone Cottage “Vintage Velvet” Chalky Painta Paint, a dramatic rich blue-black; finished with Minwax Furniture Paste for a soft subtle sheen.
The top and drawers were dark stained with General Finishes Java Gel Stain and protected with 3 coats of General Finishes Satin Water Based Top Coat.
This Chalky Patina Paint is pretty amazing! The painted finish on this dresser was accomplished in one easy coat!
Bluestone Cottage Chalky Patina Pro’s
Excellent saturated color and coverage.
Super smooth silky application.
Beautiful matte chalky finish.
Perfect adhesion.
Distressed nicely (I didn’t try wet distressing but it sanded perfectly).
Simple to wax for a soft satin sheen.
Paint levels perfectly – no brush strokes.
Not a lot of product required. I sill have 1/2 the jar left to use on another project.
Bluestone Cottage Chalky Patina Con’s
Although I love the look of these ’boutique’ paint containers (Fusion also uses similar plastic jars) I find them a challenge to re-open once used.
Yes, I admit I can be messy when I paint. I like getting my hands right in there. Makes me feel like an artistic VanGogh short of eating the stuff. So I’m always getting paint in, on, and around the lip of the can or jar once opened.
With these screw-on tops, if you don’t take the time to wipe off the excess paint before sealing it shut, the paint dries along the inside lid and it’s not an easy task to re-open.
Stay tuned for a Random Quick Tip (one of the NEW changes I was talking about on my B-Day post) where I’ll show you a quick and easy way around this!
A big thank you to Pamela for supplying the paint. Along with the Chalky Patina, Bluestone House ™ also carries a Silky Patina and Milk Paint line too!
Let me know what you think of this restyled vintage dresser…and if you’d like to see the beat up grungy before, you can see it here… and how about my DIY tissue paper flowers!? Not bad for a first try right?!
Have yourself an amazing day!

Love your posts! Have learned so much! How did you repair the chewed up corner of the middle drawer? Did you find something that is stainable for repairs? Love your work!
Thanks Leah! If I’m recalling correctly, I believe I used tinted Elmers Carpenter Wood Filler. I’ve never found a wood filler that is perfectly stainable (they always seem to take the stain a little differently) but some you can manipulate the stain to blend in. 🙂
I know this is an old post, but I think the paint is Bluestone House. Not cottage? That link leads to a catering company. That said, you dresser is beautiful!
You’re absolutely right Karen! This post was created when the paint first came out and was under the Bluestone Cottage name. I appreciated the heads up and will change it asap. Thank you. 🙂
I love the color of the stain in the end not too dark and still nice brown color. you said you did 3 coats was that with the rub off method or just wiping it on and not wiping it off to get to that color!
Thanks
Hi June! I applied the stain and then wiped it off – 3 times. With each application, the stain gets a little richer in color. 🙂
Can the chalk paint be used on fake wood (press board)? I plan to use primer, but wondered if that bothered the chalk paint. Thanks!
It sure can Amy 🙂
Beautiful!! Do you paint the inside of your drawers? I usually do buy wondered how others do it.
Hi Jennifer… and thanks. I sometimes paint the drawers. I sometimes leave them be. I sometimes line the drawers with interest printed paper. It really depends on what shape the inside of the drawer is in and what I think will look aesthetically pleasing for the over piece.
Hi Denise,
Curious if the knobs came with the dresser, and if not, where did you get them?
Thx
Hi Andy. No these knobs are not originals. They’re from Hobby Lobby.
Where are the dresser knobs from?
Hobby Lobby
What are the name of the knobs?
Did the mirror come with it? If not where do you suggest I find one that would complement it?
Yes, the mirror did come with this dresser. You can sometimes find orphaned antique mirrors selling on Craigslist. 🙂
I get asked about these knobs a lot. 🙂 I don’t know if they have a specific name but I bought them from Hobby Lobby. I like them so much I used them on my restyled bathroom vanity.
Love your work!
Thank you Eliz!
Love the mix of the dark gray with the dark wood. Very classic
This is just beautiful! Love the color and hardware … everything about it! Great job!
What size container of paint did you use? You said that you only used half of it, but how many mls were in the container? I went to her website to check it out, but don’t know what size to order. Thanks for the information AND for the inspiration!
It’s the 250ml container. When I was searching through my paints to see what color(s) I wanted to use on this dresser, I nearly didn’t use this paint because I wasn’t sure if it was going to be enough. Glad I did. The coverage was excellent and half the container was all I needed. Have fun with your project Kathy!
What brand is the chalky patina paint, the dark blue color?
It use to be called Bluestone Cottage but it’s now branded under Bluestone House.
Breathtaking! Just breathtaking! The color is gorgeous and I looooove the hardware too! Well done!
Thank you for sharing at Making Broken Beautiful!
Smiles!
Terry
The dresser is gorgeous! The paint is the icing on the cake. And I can’t believe the difference in the wood finish. What stain product did you use to get such a great finish?
Thanks Patricia! I used a few coats of General Finishes Java Gel Stain… love the stuff! Easy to work with and beautiful results.
I love that Maya Angelou saying – it is so true that it is always so great talking to people or even reading blogs like yours that make you feel good – you remember them and keep coming back for more!
I’m sorry what was it you were saying about paint? I got too distracted by the bling on your double breasted jacket – I mean dresser – those knobs are attention grabbers! At first I almost thought if it were me that I would have added a subtle blue outline or embossing in the etching in the top drawer but with those knobs it is perfect without! A learning experience in itself as I tend to procrastinate on what to do all to often!
Random Quick Tips sound great and if you have a solution for jars that get painted shut this will be just like a Surprise Gift!
Those Tissue Flowers are like a trip down memory lane for me! As a craft crazy kid I got a Tissue Flower making kit one yr and would make those flowers for special occasions for yrs to come – in place of bows on gifts and even bouquets for tablescaping if you could call it that lol. I can’t remember how those were made but recall making 2 color ones too so you could have a dif center color for some of them. Of course I don’t not remember mine turning out as nice as yours – the close up of the white one in the last pic looks like a geranium!
This gave me a smile Kari because I WAS fiddling around with the middle detail on the top drawer! First it was painted in the Vintage Velvet. Then it was painted white and decoupaged with a bird/floral napkin. I didn’t get the right vibe from either so I sanded it all down and stained to match the other drawers. Lately it’s taking me 2-3 times to get things the way I like… but I get there eventually. I’ll be sure to post my tip (exclusively for us messy painters ;)) and YES, these tissue paper flowers are SO MUCH FUN! I really like the multi-color idea too!
What an amazing colour and finish!! Such a beautiful job you did!!
Thanks so much Maxine!
Thank you so much for the wonderful review !
Thank you so much for a wonderful product Pamela!
Beautiful as always Denise!
Thanks so much Lynda! Hope all is well with you and your family. x
I too prefer paint cans, lids are much easier to open. I do have a little suggestion for the screw on lids though…rub a little Vaseline around the rim of the plastic container and the lid.
I avoid the paints in plastic containers as much as possiblen however, sometimes there is a color or two that I just have to have:-)
