10 INSPIRING BONE INLAY FURNITURE MAKEOVERS DIY STYLE!
Are you a fan of bone inlay furniture? I just LOVE inlay pieces. Unfortunately, my thriftista-self doesn’t love the price. This Anthropologie dresser is upward of $2700!
Today I’m sharing 10 of my favorite bone inlay furniture makeovers — DIY style!
Using Indian Stencils to create this looks is inexpensive and creates super attractive ‘imitation’ look-alikes. You’re going to be shocked and amazed at how authentic and beautiful these are!
I’m pretty sure I have a small Indian Stencil floating around somewhere but buying a larger one is on my to-do-list. I’m itching to try this on a dresser or buffet. Reading through these artists blog posts was truly inspiring. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did! 🙂
1:: Bone Inlay Side Board
My friend Jen at Girl In The Garage did an amazing job of transforming this Craigslist sideboard. I like that only the wood top has been stenciled. I think it gives this sideboard a clean modern inlay look. Oh, and did you know my girl Jen is a published author? If you haven’t checked out her book “Amazing Furniture Makeovers” you can find it here.
2:: Pink & White Inlay Coffee Table
Isn’t this coffee table amazing? The entire room caught my attention with the mixed patterns and colors. Eye candy! Ariel of PMQ For Two did a beautiful job at inspiring me with this pink and white inlay. Very feminine and fun!
3:: Indian Stenciled Dresser + Mirror
Here’s a classic in black and white by Tori at Wear Wag Repeat. And I love that the attached mirror has the matching stencil to tie the entire piece together.
4:: Bone Inlay Wood Chair
Steph at Casa Watkins Living stenciled this retro wood chair. Just goes to show bone inlay works amazingly on smaller projects too.
5:: Gray And White Bone Inlay Dresser
This white and grey stenciled and painted dresser from Mary at Orphans With Makeup is beautiful. Mary even took the time to paint and stencil the knobs to blend in perfectly.
6:: Wood Indian Stenciled Dresser
What can I say, simply stunning! This Cutting Edge Indian Inlay Stencil over the stained wood is gorgeous.
7:: Tribal Inlay Buffet
The tribal inlay is created by Kristine at The Painted Hive. It’s a true “sow’s ear to silk purse” makeover. You won’t believe the before!
8:: Blue and White ‘Modern’ Inlay
Blue and white anyone? I think this is the stencil I have! This smaller bone inlay inspired pattern looks stunning on this smaller nightstands. Kate from Centsations Girl created this modern take on the inlay and scored a feature in the HGTV magazine! Definitely magazine worthy!
9:: Nesting Tables
I’m a huge fan of Lauren at Blesser House and she didn’t disappoint with these Trash To Treasure faux painted nesting tables. The black and white works perfectly. P.S… I’m thinking yours truly would LOVE to be part of that “Trash To Treasure Crew”… I haven’t been invited but I’m just putting it out there. 😉
10:: Ikea Hack
Check out this brilliant tallboy dresser from Tereza at Cityscape Bliss. Everything is spot on including her styling… and especially her black and white fur baby!
Bonus:: Empire Dresser
I know I said ten (10) but here’s a bonus for you. I already finished this roundup when my friend and neighbor Ildiko at Restored 4 U (she lives a short 15 minutes away) posted her newly painted Bone Inlay Empire. It was a sign I HAD to include her gorgeous work in this roundup. If you’re not familiar with her work go check her out. She has a real knack for color combining!
I HOPE YOU ENJOYED THIS BONE INLAY FURNITURE ROUNDUP! FEEL FREE TO CHIME IN OR SHARE LINKS TO YOUR FAVORITES… I ALWAYS LOVE HEARING FROM YOU.
Thanks for reading. 🙂
Wishing you a beautiful day filled with inspiration and Happy Painting friends!

Every one of these examples is absolutely gorgeous! Goodness, now I want to get an Indian stencil and try this. My daughter wants a short dresser in her living room and this style would fit her style perfectly. Going to show her these and come up with a plan. Thanks for the inspiration!
I want to try this too!! And your daughter is super lucky she has such a talented Mum who can make custom pieces! Although I’m guessing she’s pretty creative too! π
Thank you for featuring my dresser! Since I did that I also stenciled a matching sidetable for next to my bed. And seeing this post now makes me want to pull out my stencil and re-do and old jewelry box I’ve been meaning to paint. I love how the white paint looks onn natural wood. I’m going to give it a shot!

They’re all gorgeous, right!?! I’m with you… now I want to bone in-lay all things too! π
Hi Denise. I am in love with bone inlay furniture, but like you hate the high price. Stenciling faux bone inlay is brilliant. Beautiful round-up. Love all the eye candy.
Ya, they can be SUPER costly but I guess with all the work that goes into authentic bone in-lay furniture it makes sense. I’m all over these faux versions though… I agree, real eye candy!
Thanks for this beautiful post Denise. All of these makeovers are inspiring! – Nicki

Yes! These details are drool-worthy for sure! π I’m guessing stenciling a larger in-layed piece would be time-consuming but I can’t wait to try! π
