This salvaged side table gets a Wedgewood-Inspired Makeover using A Custom Mixed Paint Color | How To Mix A Custom Paint PERFECTLY Every Time! | YouTube Video

Hi, sweet friends, I hope you’re having a great week. This past Monday was a Civic Holiday here in Canada so it was nice to celebrate a long weekend. A few friends of mine visited the Painted Lady houses in Grimsby Ontario. Ohmygosh they are adorable. It was a TON of color inspiration. I’ll share a few pics at the end of the post so you can see how lovely they are.
The painted homes inspired me to restyle a side table I painted for my sister in 2017. Andrea wanted it to be changed to a Wedgewood Blue paint color. This requires some color mixing to get an exact match so today I’m sharing how to mix a custom paint color with NO mess, NO fussing with numerous paint colors, and NO guesswork. This shortcut will save you time and money and you’ll have a PERFECT match every time.

Here’s the original roadside wood side table. This is how it looked before its 2017 DIY Chalk Painted Makeover.
And here’s what the table looks like now. It was painted and restyled in a paint color called “Dijon”.
After so many years of use, it could use a refresh yet overall the DIY Homemade Chalk Paint Recipe held up really well!

WEDGEWOOD INSPIRED SIDE TABLE
Here’s how it all came together…
REMOVE HARDWARE
There were two ornate hardware knobs that I removed from this side table. I had purchased them years ago from Hobby Lobby for 50% off. Even though they are older, I still love them.
CLEAN/PREP
The inside and outside of this side table were cleaned with this White Lightning. I wiped it down a few times and then used clean water to remove any residue.
SANDING
The original finish held up AWESOME! Seeing as I was giving it another coat of paint, I gave it a quick scuff sanding using 100-grit sandpaper and my Bosch Sander. This gave the surface a little tooth for good paint adhesion. Then using a tack-cloth, I removed all the sanding dust before priming.
HOW TO MIX A CUSTOM PAINT COLOR
Now for the FUN part! My secret to mixing the perfect custom paint color is using an online tool. Rather than gathering numerous paint jars and pretending I’m a color mixologist, I’d rather let a free program do the dirty work. Here’s a FREE online Color Lab you can use. I took a screenshot of a Wedgewood Vase and input it into the program.
The program calculates the colors and exact recipe you need to create the match. No second guessing or making a mess with mixing paint and trying to get it right. I find this so easy to use. I chose to use SILK All-In-One Mineral paint so I wouldn’t have to prime and topcoat. A 50/50 recipe of Salt Water and Cape Current gave me perfect results.

MIXING PAINT RECIPE
The next morning I grabbed the two paints I needed to create my custom Wedgewood-Blue. The paint-recipe was 50% Salt Water + 50% Cape Current.
Quick Tip – A quick and dirty way to measure paint without pouring it out of the jar is to use a stir stick. Holding the stir stick perfectly straight and stick it in the paint touching the bottom of the jar. Then ull it out making sure it’s perfectly straight. In the image below, I have more Cape Current than Salt Water. I added a little more Salt Water to even it out and make it a 50/50 mix.
Once I had my paint measured, I poured the Salt Water into the Cape Current and gave it a mixing. It looks like Wedgewood Blue!!
I painted two coats of this custom color onto the side table. Once the first coat dried, I saw it was a touch darker then I anticipated.
For the second coat, I added a tiny bit more Salt Water to the mix to slightly lighten it up. I also used this slap-it-on technique to get a flawless and brush free finish on the curved legs.
Here’s what the first coat looked like as it was drying.
ADDING WEDGEWOOD DETAILS
For the gorgeous Wedgewood-Inspired details, I grabbed my ‘scrap mold box’ and hunted for suitable molds.
I found some resin molds I had cast years ago. They were dusty and the excess resin hadn’t even been cut away but they were PERFECT for what I had in mind. I cleaned them up with soap and water. The color was so perfect against the blue they didn’t need to be painted.
Doesn’t this white resin look great against the blue!?
Because of the holiday, I was unable to get a few things I needed to finish this little side table up. I ran out of contact glue and used wood glue instead. It’s not holding properly (especially around the edges!) so I will be fixing this up later this week. I also ordered this magnetic door latch system. It will give this side table a clean look on the outside and open and close nicely.
THE FINISHED LOOK
Here’s the finished look.
And what do you think of the door fronts? … and the color?!
The wood glue isn’t doing a good job of holding those edges down but once I buy and use this Contact Cement, it will do the trick.
Here’s a close-up look.
Mixing custom paint colors is fun and gratifying so I hope you give it a try!

The table looks good but I really liked the original color. Those houses look so happy! You just have to smile a ton if you lived in that neighborhood!
The original color was nice too. I think Andrea was ready for change. 😉 And yes, those houses just put a HUGE smile on my face! I don’t think I’d like to live in that neighbourhood tho… I’m a private person and having everyone walk by and take pics in front of my house would stress me.😂
Gorgeous color, Denise. I’ll give those color matching suggetions a try. Thanks!
Thanks Caye! With the online tools we have today color matching is toooo easy…lol. 😉
Love that color, great job on this refresh. Those homes are adorable to.
Thanks Tracy and aren’t they?! It was such a nice afternoon out!
I think the color is spot on – I had a few blue porcelain Wedgewood pieces as a new bride 58 years ago. Good job! And I think the success of the embellishments lies with your sister – it will be hers. Hope she loves it.
Thanks, and so nice you had a few Wedgewood piece, they are so beautiful! I hope she loves it too!💙
It’s a cutie and the color is a great match! Thanks for sharing the tool Denise!
Thanks Nicki! I’m really happy with the color match as well.💙
I have a gateleg table that was painted black when I purchased it 7 years ago. The top has gotten scratched and I
wish to paint it and leave the rest of it black as it looks fine.
I was thinking Gulf but now I see this lovely wedgewood color I may just change my mind. It looks so good and the color is spot on. Can’t wait to see the you tube about mixing to get the color you want.
Gulf is vibrant and beautiful as well! This custom Wedgewood mix is a more muted than Gulf so I guess it depends on the look you’re after. I’ll have the video on how to use the colormixer this weekend. It’s super easy! 🙂
Hi Denise. You mixed the perfect Wedgewood blue. This little table is adorable. Thanks for the paint mixing tips.
Thanks so much Monique! So glad you like it!
