HERE’S HOW TO USE DIXIE SHINE METALLIC FOILS TO GLAM UP ANY FURNITURE MAKEOVER | YOUTUBE VIDEO
Hi creative SI family, thanks for joining me today. Sometimes I need a new product to get me out of a creative funk and that’s exactly what this Dixie Shine did for me! Dixie Shine is a metallic foil. When applied to a project it gives a very similar look to gold leaf! This was my first time using this product and I’m sharing my thoughts on how it applies and looks on this MCM furniture makeover.
It’s also Trash To Treasure Tuesday. I’m joining my T2T crew and sharing links to their projects down below. I can’t wait to see what they’ve done and I hope you join me on the tour as well!
Here’s the MCM Dresser I started with. If you’ve been following me for a few years you may remember this makeover back in 2018. I’ll share the first version of this dresser below so you can compare the two looks.
I loved this dresser so much, rather than list it for sale, I held onto it thinking I was going to use it. It was put in storage and unfortunately got a little beat up. Here’s a close-up. A few pieces of veneer had chipped off.
I originally painted in a few spots that were damaged… that’s how much I wanted to keep this piece!

DIXIE SHINE MCM DRESSER
CLEAN | FILL | SAND
I started by giving this dresser a cleaning and removing the hardware. Then I filled all the chipped veneer, scratches, and old hardware holes with Bondo. For the smaller nicks and scratches, I used this filler here because it’s super easy to sand.
After all the filler had dried, I sanded it down smoothly with my Bosch Orbital Sander and gave this dresser an overall good all-over scuff sanding.
PRIME
Once the dresser was sanded and all the dust was removed, I primed it with two coats of BIN Shellac Based Primer. If you’ve never used this stain-bonding primer, I have a full post + Youtube Video here.
PAINT
I wanted this dresser to be super feminine so the color I picked is one of my favorite pinks – this Conch Silk Mineral Paint. Conch is inspired by a Conch Shell and this pink pairs really well with green, white, tan, and grey. I sprayed two coats using my new spray gun which I absolutely LOVE! It sprays beautifully without a lot of overspray.
HOW TO APPLY DIXIE BELLE SHINE
Now for the FUN part!!! This was my first time using Dixie Shine yet it was really easy to apply. Using the existing detail on the top drawer I wanted to add some gold striping. I masked off my stripes using painter’s tape. Then using an artist’s brush I added a generous coat of this Stick With Me glue and then pulled off the painter’s tape. The instructions say to let it sit for 15 minutes until it turns tacky and translucent. I’m sharing exactly what the glue should look like in the Youtube video below.
Once the glue turned translucent, I cut off a piece of Gold Dixie Shine and laid it onto the drawer. Using this burnishing pad, I burnished the gold foil onto the dresser drawer and pulled the remaining strip up. This is a really fun process!
DIXIE SHINE ~ How-To in 5 Easy Steps
- Mask off the area you want the Dixie Shine (if needed)
- Apply a generous layer of this Stick With Me Glue and wait 15 minutes
- Lay the Dixie Shine shiny side up on the translucent tacky Glue and burnish it onto your project
- Pull the Dixie Shine Foil Up
- Repeat if necessary and ENJOY the metallic shine!
FINISHING TOUCHES
For the finishing touches, I added these new 6″ modern gold legs and this beautiful gold hardware! There is no need to topcoat the Dixie Shine OR this paint as the topcoat is already included.
And here’s the finished look. Check out this feminine and glam shiny finish!! What do you think?
I like the bit of ‘abstract’ gold detail the Dixie Shine is adding to this top dresser.
Here’s a closer look!
I will definitely be trying the silver and copper Dixie Shine as well!

Hi Denise! Conch is such a pretty color. So is this used like gold leaf or is it some kind of foil? It turned out pretty.
Hi Cheryl! 🤗 I love Conch too! And it’s a foil that is used like gold leaf. It also comes in copper and silver which I’d like to try as well.
