I recently started a Painted End Tables Pinterest Board and I can’t wait to pin this Peacock Makeover on it! It started out as this sad three-legged end table I found curbside along with this vintage dresser I restyled a few weeks back.
And speaking of past posts, I want to thank each and every one of you who participated in last weeks [Re]Design With Prima Giveaway. I’m announcing the lucky winner today, so stay with me!
So back to the end table, MMM took one look at this roadside find and said: “only YOU would pick this one up… anyone else would leave that three-legged piece of junk out there!
He was joking of course. He’s a lover of all things wood and vintage just like me. And I will confess if I didn’t have his skills to replicate this back leg, I may have left this one RIP roadside. But luckily I am blessed with this wonderful and talented man who’s generous enough to indulge my odd obsessions!
Here’s what we started with and it makes for an amazing before and after… don’t you just LOVE this color!

PEACOCK END TABLE MAKEOVER::
As I mentioned, the back leg was MIA so MMM replicated it perfectly. After some heavy duty filling and sanding this is what I was working with.
After the repairs were made and all the flaws in the wood heavily sanded, I used a black spray paint over the entire table. My thoughts for the black was two-fold. To prime and seal the wood so I wouldn’t have any bleedthrough – and I also wanted a black base to show through this vibrant peacock.
The problem was some bleedthrough was still coming through after the first coat. Rather than spray another coat of smelly paint, I coated it with Dixie Belle’s BOSS.
Tip: Dixie Belle’s BOSS can be used OVER paint if you are still seeing bleedthrough! I used this exact technique on this stubborn teacart makeover and it works amazing! As an added bonus, BOSS comes in clear (looks milky when its first applied as you can see in the pic below but dries clear) so the color of your undercoat shows through beautifully… and it’s waterbased so NO smell!
No bleedthrough and the black base shows through nicely. I also top coated with Black Wax to add extra protection with contrast and texture. What do you think?
I’m loving this color! It a happy color that gives this vintage end table a modern look!
I’m excited this end table has a happy ending and thanks for sharing it with me today!
And now for the lucky winner of last weeks giveaway! A BIG thank you to [Re]Design With Prima for sponsoring the giveaway and again, thanks to everyone who participated!

Oh also is all of the dimension just from the wax or did you sand down to the black primer coat to distress? Thanks!
Dimension is from the dark wax. Heavier in some areas lighter in others. 🙂
Hi! Obsessed with this look I’ve been searching for inspo for weeks so I’m SO glad I came across your piece!! I’m going to get Dixie belle peacock. Just wondering what your method was for applying the wax? Also with Dixie belle chalk paint you don’t have to prime right? Did you do one coat or two? Thank you so much in advance for your advice here!!
Hi Laura and thanks. 🙂 Dixie Belle’s Peacock is GORG and is really pigmented with excellent coverage. That said, whether you require 1 or 2 coats will depend on the piece your painting – light/dark/wood type etc.
Hi.
This looks great. It gave me some ideas.
Thanks for posting.
Beautiful color! It really pops! I love the dresser make over too!
Thanks so much, Lorin! I’m really happy with both ‘rescues’ too. 😉
Absolutely fabulous color!! Your tips and techniques are truly appreciated .
Aw, thanks Sara… I appreciate it. Have yourself a beautiful day! x
Great color for such dreary weather. Great leg work too. Lucky the ornate piece on the bottom was still intact, adds so much. Wish Dixie Belle would ship to Canada, would like to try some of their products.
It is a pick-me-up-color, isn’t it! DB does have Canadian retailers now. 🙂
I’ve checked this same link before with 0 results for Canada, so I’ve emailed them to ask for list of online Canadian retailers. We shall see. Thanks!
Tracy, I know I know this, but right now I’m not recalling where you live (omgosh…embarrassing sorrrry). Yesssss, Montreal area… I knew that! 🙂 This is AMAZING Tracy! Thank YOU!! 🙂
What a beautiful color
Hi Colleen! I like it too! 🙂
It is amazing how you transformed the ugly duckling into a beautiful swan! (or peacock). This post caught my eye in a flash with I saw you had some advice on bleedthrough. I will be getting the Dixie Bell Boss for sure since I get anxious when painting anything wooden. Peacock is the bomb!! Love the way you let the dark show and aged it with the dark wax. Whenever I use dark wax, I cut it with white wax; however, I feel like it makes the piece look dirty instead of aged. You always seem to put wonderful finishing touches with your wax or distressing. Love your blog and the valuable information you share.
…transformed the ugly duckling into a beautiful swan! (or peacock)… lol…very cute! Thanks Cecilia. 🙂 And I know you’ll really appreciate DB BOSS. If you have a bleedthrough issue, it’s easy to use, no smell and easy cleanup.
Love the colour. I wish Dixie belle paints were available in BC.
They very well might be. I left a link under Tracy’s comment if you’d like to go take a peek. 🙂
Love me some BOSS! It worked wonders over paint on a chair I was working on that had paint resist. Love the peacock blue, especially paired with black wax, on this end table, Denise! Kudos to you for rescuing this three-legged relic, I would have kept driving. If only the previous owners could see their table now! Pinned 🙂
Love me some BOSS too! Thanks so much for the share/pin, my friend. XO
Beautiful color!
Thanks, Patricia! Have a beautiful day. xo
Love this and how you did not have a drawer and still found a perfect way to reuse it!!!! love the color too!!!! Thanks for all your work that you share!!! So happy I found your site!!!
I’m so happy you’ve found the SI Blog too Justina!!! I painted the inside ‘cubby’ white (should have taken a pic without the books so you could see) but it’s nice and clean looking so baskets or knick-knacks could be displayed beautifully. 🙂
Thanks so much for this Denise! I had the exact same thing happen with a good chalk paint I used on a hutch! I actually have some BOSS being shipped to me prior to reading this. Good to know that I don’t have to sand my piece back. Thanks again!
Feel free to let me know what you think of the BOSS once you get a chance to try it… I’m sure you’ll love it!
I am so glad I found your blog! I’ve just started chalk painting furniture and it’s a bigger challenge for me than I thought! Your results are beyond perfect! Can’t wait for your next post!
Hi Jane! I remember when I first started painting everything seemed to take me SO long and seemed quite challenging too. Very normal. You’ll get more comfortable with each piece you do and then techniques and creativity feel WAY easier. Enjoy the journey. 🙂
Hi Denise. Your MMM is right, most people would never think to rescue a 3 legged table. Luckily for us readers (and the little table) you did!!!!! What an amazing transformation and I LOVE the color you chose to paint it. SO CUTE 😀
Thanks Monique! MMM did a great job at replicating the back leg and ya, I love the color too!
