THIS TRASH-BOUND TV TABLE GETS A BRAND NEW LIFE WITH TROPICAL PARADISE | YOUTUBE VIDEO
Hello sweet friends! I’m back today with this trashed tv table makeover. Be sure to stay to the end of today’s post to see my inspiration for this makeover!
It’s also the fourth Thursday of the month and this means it’s Furniture Fixer Upper Day. I’m sharing my blogging besties’ FFU makeovers below. Like you, I only get to see the ‘before’ images prior to publishing. So I can’t wait to head on over and see what they’ve done!
Here’s the curb-shopped TV Table I started with. You might remember the tray as well. It’s been sitting outdoors and has taken a beating so I think it’s time to put it to good use.
The tv table top wasn’t in the best shape either.
And it needed a good cleaning. Challenge on! Let’s see if we can bring this back to life.

TV TABLE MAKEOVER
Here’s how I salvaged this TV Table and tray into a tropical paradise!
CLEANING
Both of these pieces needed a good cleaning! The tv table was found curbside and has been sitting in my inventory for years. The tray has been left out in the elements for months. I used this White Lightening Cleaner mixed with some water in a spray bottle and a large sponge.
SLICK STICK PRIMER
Once the table and tray were clean and dry, I primed them with Slick Stick so I wouldn’t have to sand them. This primer is awesome when your having a lazy day and don’t want to bust out the sander.
THICK COTTON PAINT
As chalk paint ages, it’s normal for it to thicken up. When I opened my jar of Cotton Chalk Mineral Paint, it was too thick to paint with so I thinned it out with a little water.
Pro Tip – Rather than adding water into the original paint container, I always pour some paint into a bowl and mix in a little water there. If you add water directly into the original container, you take the chance of contaminating your leftover paint if it sits for a long time.
PAINTING
Once my paint was thinned I used my oval brush to paint two coats of Cotton Chalk Mineral Paint for total coverage.
TRANSFER
Now for the fun part! I found this vibrant green jungle transfer and used it for the top of the tray. I tried finding the exact transfer to link but they were all sold out so here’s a similar one for you.
To adhere the transfer, I removed the design from the sheet, placed it exactly where I wanted it, and then rubbed it on with the tool provided. I have a full tutorial on How To Rub On Transfers here.
As seen below I used a craft knife to cut the transfer to size and matched up the pattern in the middle of the tray.
TOP COAT
For a topcoat and protection, I used this water-based clear wax which works really well over transfers. I also LOVE this large wax brush which makes waxing so much faster!
And here’s how this trash-bound TV table all came together.
What do you think? I’m in love with this tropical green vibe against the clean white!
I didn’t attach the tray to the top but now that I see it was moving around while I was staging/styling, I’m going to add a few screws to the bottom to hold it in place.
I can’t wait to hear what you think!

Fantastic. Just made two TV tables from waste wood. This is the way I shall finish them. Thanks
That’s amazing Harjith! Have fun.🤗
Looks awesome. Thanks for all the how to’s!
Thanks so much! 🙂
Love the green and white…and of course the tropical feel! Glad you got to enjoy some for yourself 🌴🍹😎
Do you advise letting the slick stick or boss sit overnight? Hate having to wait until the next day or later when I realize I need to use it….I have no patience 😁😁
Thanks so much Susan! And yes, I hear you because I feel the same way!😆 Yes, the Slick Stick and BOSS require 24hour wait period to work optimally. So when I’m on a time crunch (which is often!) I use BIN Shellac Based Primer which is a bonding primer AND a stain blocker.
OMGOSH I LOVE IT!!!! Now I’m goi g to have to add this TV tray to my ‘on the hunt for’ list.
So glad you love it Meg! Have fun!!
Denise, I love your TV tray makeover! It’s so bright and cheerful now!!
You share the best tips for us to make our projects successful, thank you for that!

Aw, thank so much Gail! And thanks for pinning! XOXO
I love Fixer Up Friday! You gals are so inspiring and fun! The TV tray turned out great and a set of 4 would be even better! I have been in a slump lately so seeing these makeovers have given me a surge of inspiration! Glad you’re taking a break and enjoying the sun! Did Andrea go? XOXO
I love FFU day as well. I only get to see the “befores” until we all publish so I’m always curious about what the ladies have done as well! And no…booooo… Andrea didn’t come with us but hopefully next time. She could really use a vacation as well. Have a super day my friend… and I’m so glad the tour sparked a few ideas/inspo!!! Hugs XOXO
Hi Denise,
I love it, I love it, I love it! I am now on the hunt for an old TV tray. Thank you so much for this great idea.
Thanks Marian! XOXO
I love the idea of using the old tray as the tabletop! And I’m loving the tropical vibe, Denise! Thanks for sharing!👍
My pleasure, so happy you like it! Have a great day my friend! XOXO
Such a great idea! From old and dated TV table to chic side table.
Yay, thanks my friend! XOXO
Tropical is not something I would gravitate to, but your rendering of it has changed my mind. Thank you, Denise.
I love this tray because it is so refreshing. I can see it on the patio with friends gathered and cool drinks on the menu.
I can SO see this on a patio, I love this idea! Thanks Caye! XOXO
Oh my gosh, I could not love this more, Denise! I knew you were going to do something fabulous with it! Are you keeping it? It looks so good in your space! And y’all are too cute…looks like a fun trip!! XOXO
So easy with this pretty transfer, right?! Do you have Tropical Paradise transfer stocked in your Etsy Shop?… or do you know if it’s discontinued? Everywhere I looked to link it up it was sold out. And thanks my friend… super fun and MUCH NEEDED! XOXO
I don’t carry this one, but Redesign has put a hold on selling all of their large transfers while they deal with a patent issue. They are working quickly to resolve the issue and hopefully you’ll see your favorites back in stores soon! ❤️
ahhh, I see! I was wondering why a lot of the transfers I was looking for were all sold out.
Very nice! Basically turned junk into something attractive and useful.
Exactly! Thanks so much Ruth!🤗
Clap! Clap! Clap! Bravo! That was a really good idea! I may do that one myself. Enjoy your day!
Thanks so much, Michael!😃 Wishing you a super day as well!
Super cute table. Do you sand between coats?
Christy James #ConfessionsOfaSerialDiyer sells transfers in her Etsy shop. Unless you make a commission, I’d rather buy from her. She has the one you suggested also.
haha, I just asked her and left a link in the comment!🙌🤗
Love it! I just started using transfers on my pieces and they are so fun. Usually put them in a drawer on nightstands for a pop of surprise. Thank you for sharing your ideas!
A pop of surprise always adds a nice touch with custom furniture! And they’re so easy to use with such gorgeous designs, right?! Thanks Geri!
Hi Denise. What a cute little project. I’m loving the tropical vibe. It looks like you and Mara had a wonderful time on your vacation.
I’m loving the tropical vibe as well!🏝 Thanks so much my friend!💙
