Hi guys! You all asked me to keep you updated on any home projects I do, so today I’m sharing this super cute DIY Wood Tray Makeover. This is just in time to style it for Christmas and give you a sneak peek at my living room makeover in progress!!! The best part is today’s makeover didn’t cost a thing so I’m feeling generous! Be sure to stick with me *** GIVEAWAY ALERT ***… woohoo!
This DIY wood tray makeover is SO quick and easy… and stink’n cute, I hope it inspires you to take a second look at what YOU have around your home. Sometimes, all that old boring piece needs is a ridiculously simple tweak to make it fun again!
Here’s what I started with. A white painted HomeSense tray that I bought 10+ years ago. There was nothing wrong with it other than it was collecting dust in my basement because I was tired of looking at it.
I did a little sanding and added an old chair spindle to the mix and WOW… look at her now!

DIY WOOD TRAY MAKEOVER::
Do you remember the Indian Mirror I bought from HomeSense and used in my bathroom makeover? That mirror was my inspiration for this tray. And it’s funny. I’m usually all about painting to create a new look, but in the case of this wood tray makeover, it was taking OFF some of the paint that created this amazing look!
Step #1:: Clean
I gave it a good wipe down with a sponge and warm water.
Step #2:: Sand
I used this Dewalt sander which makes it effortless to sand. It took me all of 3 minutes [maybe not even] to sand the high spots off this tray. Here you can see the left side is sanded and the right is not. Look at the difference in all that detail!
Step #3:: Cut Spindles into Bunt Feet
I already had the little bunt feet prepared for this tray because I cut up this entire chair spindle when making these wood tray risers.
Step #4:: Paint Feet
I painted the feet in this clean white to match the existing white paint on the tray.
Step #5:: Glue Feet On
After I added 3 coats of white paint and let the feet dry, and then glued them onto the bottom corners of the tray with this wood glue. What do you think?
The feet really add a nice touch, don’t they!? And check out my new carpet and coffee table!!!!
I’m so excited to finally be redecorating my living room because it’s long overdue. I still need to prime, paint and add some finishing touches, but it’s well on its way! I’ll be sure to share any painted furniture projects I add to the room. I have a couple of pieces in mind already! 🙂
And now for a fun *****G*I*V*E*A*W*A*Y*****!

I love the new carpet. What is the brand and where can I get it?
Thanks Christy! It’s a Sydney Brand – 7×10 Gray and White and I bought it at End of The Roll. I tried looking for it online so I could provide you with a link but I can’t seem to find it. If I come across an online link in the furniture, I’ll come back and add it in.
The bunt feet are so perfect, I love this idea! I’d like to do it if I ever find a cute tray like that.

I love your up-cycles and your furniture makeovers. I get inspired every time I read your posts. Happy Holidays to you and your family!
Hi Kelly!!! Thank you, and happy holidays to you and your family as well. xo
Love the upcycled tray. Its great to be able to “shop” one’s own collection instead of buying something new – and remaking an old item that we were tired of looking at. Again, love the tray along with everything you do.
Wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas and all the best in the New Year.
That’s all for now, Nancy
Hi Nancy! 🙂 Ya, it’s great to breath new life into older items laying around, isn’t it! Merry Christmas and happy holidays to you too! xo

Isn’t it amazing!…have you tried the teal!?! I love their gilding wax too! Good luck to you Cheryl. 🙂
What a gorgeous little iced oatmeal lace cookie! Makes me want to get in the kitchen and bake 🙂
Hi Jenna! Confession – I bought these shortbread cookies. I’m more of an eater than a baker and believe me, if these were home-baked, they would look nooooothing like this! lol
Hi Denise:
Your blog always gives me a smile…and inspiration!
I have an old, very tarnished (beyond repair) silver plated serving tray I “saved” from a trash bin…your tray inspires me to give it some love.
That and the chairs, side board, coffee table…
One thing – and one day – at a time. All the great tips and advice from your blog will help me get there!
YOU just put a big smile on my face! Thank you, Tracy. And my sister has a collection of tarnished silver plated serving trays. She’s kept many as is but she’s also painted a few… they look gorgeous painted! Best of luck to you Tracy! x
Thank you for the giveaway! I like the holiday decorations in your post. very cute!
Thanks Kayley! Good luck to you!
I love, love, love the new look of your tray! It is so amazing that something so ‘simple’ can make such a difference! Today I am going to look around to see what i can put legs on!
PS. do you mind sharing where you bought the rug and is it a comfy thick one!!
Hi CC and thank you! 🙂 I bought my carpet at End of The Roll and I’m extremely happy with how comfy/thick it is. I’ve also heard stories of shedding, smelling or wrinkled carpets but this one was perfect from the get-go!
What a lovely idea for an old tray. I especially appreciate your easier projects Many thanks and Merry Christmas!
Thanks Sharon! And Merry Christmas to you too! Good luck in the giveaway. 🙂
LOL I have the same tray thanks for the idea!
You’re welcome! 😉 Best of luck in the giveaway Laura! x
The little feet add so much to your tray, love it!
Thanks Linda! I have a Folgers coffee container full of them – all different shapes and sizes from the old spindles. I’m sure I’ll come across another use for them at some point. 🙂
So pretty! I love redoing things I already own. Such a win!
Thanks Valerie and me tooooo! 🙂
The little feet are genius! But your staging and photography are the best parts! I love updating trays, they can be used in so many ways.
Thanks so much, Laura – huge compliment! Glad you like the ‘feet’ idea. 🙂

Wayfair! They are on sale for a great deal! 🙂
I love the tray with less paint to bring out the details! Simple makeovers are the best! Love to read your blog!

Hi Denise. I love how you updated your cute little tray. The sanding really shows off the details and the little feet are sweet. I have to admit, I’m a bit jealous. Your home looks GORGEOUS! I’ve been trying to update my home for a while now but it’s a loooong process. Thanks for sharing. And I hope I win the mug so we can have virtual coffee together.;)
I’d looove to have a ‘virtual’ coffee with you! 😉 And I so get it! I’m envious of the people who can knock off a room makeover in a week or two! Don’t know how they do it because I (like you) find it’s a long process. But I guess so long as we have fun with the process – that’s what counts, right?! 🙂 Good luck in the giveaway! x
Love your little tray!!!! Thank you for this chance to win a gift card!!!!
Thank you and good luck to you, Teresa! 🙂
