A DOG-BITTEN DRESSER GETS A GORGEOUS MAKEOVER USING DIXIE BELLE’S ENGLISH IVY COTTAGE PAINT **GIVEAWAY ALERT** | YOUTUBE VIDEO
Hi sweet friends and welcome back. Today I’m sharing a salvaged dresser makeover with a new to me English Ivy Cottage Paint Color. I’ve also found my new favorite tool to stencil with. Last week I mentioned I bought an airbrush to use on my wreath – but I didn’t end up trying it. Well, I had so much fun with it this week. Just wait until you see how amazing this airbrushed stencil looks!

Here’s the salvaged three-drawer dresser I started with. I found it selling at my local Restore. I paid $70 for this dresser thinking it was in pretty good shape. Wait until you see the doozie damage that I missed… I still can’t believe I didn’t see it.
The dresser is solid wood and very well built but had a few scratches that needed filling. But that was nothing in comparison to what I saw once I brought it home.
Check out these dog scratches or bites. How did I miss this????!!!! 🤦♀️ I can’t even say it was because I was lazy and didn’t pull it out from between two pieces of furniture before buying it. If you look at the before pic, this dresser was at the end of the row and this side was the one that was totally exposed. Please tell me I’m not the only one who’s ever missed something like this…lol.

Challenge on to fix this doggy-damaged dresser up and make her pretty again!
PREP
To prep this dresser for paint I started by removing the hardware. I used plyers to twist off these old square nuts. Then using a Pry Bar, I pried up the finishing nail holding the hardware plate on. These prybars are SUPER handy for so many applications when restoring furniture.
I cleaned the dresser with White Lightning. I made sure to use a brush to get the dirt out of the grooves and all those dog bites. Then I rinsed the sponge and gave the entire piece a wipe-down with clean water to remove any residue.
HOW TO REMOVE CASTOR WHEELS
There was one castor wheel missing on this dresser. I originally thought of replacing the wheel. I have some antique wheels in my inventory but then I reconsidered as I wanted a more modern look. To take all four castor wheels off, I used a pry bar and hammer. I’ll have the full how-to on the YouTube video below – but the basics are to pry the plate away from the bottom of the wood leg. Position the pry bar against the plate and then wack the pry bar with your hammer until it pops out. Depending on how rusted the castor wheels are will dictate how easy or challenging it will be to remove.
HOW TO FIX DOG-CHEWED FURNITURE
So as I mentioned, I have NO IDEA how I missed this in the store or loading it into my car. But it stuck out like a sore thumb when I brought it down to my studio! To fix these dog bites or scratches I used Bondo. It dries fast. It dries super hard and is durable.
Here are the steps to fix dog-damaged furniture –
- Flipping the dresser, I secured a board and created a ‘frame’ along the bottom of the damaged side. This allowed me to create a straight edge for the Bondo fix.
- I mixed up a good amount of Bondo and spread it onto the damaged wood making sure to cover and fill all the bite/scratch marks.
- When the Bondo was semi-dry (5-10 min) I removed the board.
- After it dried (about 20 min) I sanded it down smooth.
- There were still a few spots that needed building up, so I repeated steps 2 and 4 until it was perfect.
SAND & PRIME
After I was finished with the repair, I gave the entire piece a scuff sanding with my Bosch Sander which is 25% OFF as of writing this post! I gave the top of this desk some extra sanding to smooth out the large scratches and used Bondo to fill any other divots and imperfections. I primed with two coats of BIN Shellac Primer to cover all the bleed-through. I have a full tutorial on How To Use BIN Shellac Based Primer HERE.
PAINTING WITH ENGLISH IVY
Now for the fun part! I chose to paint this dresser in this English Ivy which is a beautiful earthy forest green with gray undertones.
I applied two coats using my two-inch flat brush.
Then I let it dry overnight.
HOW TO STENCIL WITH AN AIRBRUSH
Using an airbrush is all new to me but let me tell you, friends, this is FUUUUNNNN! It’s my new favorite ‘toy’ and I can’t wait to learn and create different finishes with it. I was surprised at how little paint it uses and how precise and thin coats of paint it applies. Perfect for stenciling as it dries really fast and is ready for another coat within minutes.
Here’s how I stenciled with the airbrush –
- I diluted a little Gold Metallic Paint with water and added it to the airbrush cup.
- I connected my airbrush to the compressor and turned it on.
- Then I positioned my Enchanted Garden Stencil in place using painter’s tape and airbrushed a thin coat onto the stencil.
- I dried the metallic paint for a few seconds with my heat gun.
- Then repeated airbrushing another coat… super fun and easy!
TOPCOAT AND PROTECT
The next morning after everything was dry, I spray-top-coated this desk with Gator Hide.
NEW HARDWARE
I bought these brass knobs off Amazon and they worked perfectly with the metallic stencil design.
FINISHED ENGLISH IVY DRESSER
Here’s the finished look.
And here’s a closer look at the airbrushed gold metallic stencil design against the English Ivy.

Thank you karen!
The photo in the upper left corner of your photo collage showing the doggo damage is cracking me up. I can only see your feet but I can just imagine the expression on your face! 🤣 The combination of green and gold is very striking. Thank you for the chance to win some DB supplies. 🤞🏻
I’m sure the expression you’re imagining on my face is the exact one…lol. Good luck to you Honore!
I appreciate getting a good look at English Ivy. The repair you made on this piece encourages me do the same when I find an item I normally would pass on. Thank you
Thanks Sharon! Usually damaged pieces you can pick up for a fraction of the cost too… so worth it if you have the time to repair.
Just amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Josee!!!
Love the gold. Also inspired to fix my weather-damaged garage door using Bondo.
YAY! I hope the repair goes well for you Cyndel!
One of your prettiest pieces! Love this. I have an old dress of my father’s that I would like to refinish and out to good use. This has my imagination going. You never disappoint!
I’m so glad you love it! Your father’s dresser project sounds lovely. xo Good luck in the giveaway!
Cant wait to try an air brush stencil. It looks so good!!
You’re going to have so much fun with it Karen. I’d love for you to tag me so I can see what you do!!
Genius way of fixing the damage with a board, you are so inspiring. Perfect hardware to complement the print too. I’m seeing it near a windowed wall overlooking the ocean! Beautiful job, D, with the air brush work.
I think the brass knobs were a great match to the gold stencil too and this airbrush… super fun!! Thanks so much and best of luck in the giveaway! XOXO
This is stunning, just gorgeous! Love that color paint also.
It’s a beautiful shade, isn’t it!?! Thanks Debra!
Wowzer! This turned out beautifully, Denise. Now I want an airbrush. 😊 And I have to admit, I too have missed doggie chews but Bondo always fixes them right up. Little rascals.
Thank for sharing and this is a beautiful round up of talented creative bloggers. Well done everyone. xo 😘
Isn’t Bondo the best…lol, and you’d have so much fun with the airbrushing. I can’t wait to try it again! XOXO
Green is usually not for me, but that is STUNNING!
YAY! I’m so glad you like it and thank you Deb! xo
So pretty! Love the green and gold combination.
Thank you Fiona!
This dresser is stunning! Nice job
Thanks Deb!! 🙂
At first I thought the color was a bit boring, but the gold really made an impact! Turned out lovely.
Thanks so much Lynne!
I always look forward to your projects. You inspire me and I love the dresser. Thanks
Aw, thank you so much Diane! Good luck in the giveaway!
Beautiful! Could you post a pic of the repaired damaged side? I’m curious about how the finished repair looks. 🙂
Yes, I can do that for you! I thought of that as well when I posting… I should have taken a pic of that side!
You are the boss of beautiful modern-looking furniture! I don’t comment often, but this: is one might just be your GOAT!
I’m so happy you love it and thanks for taking the time to comment Marietta! Good luck in the giveaway!
Nice job. I can’t wait to airbrush on furniture.
I also bought DB’s Silk Paint and am looking forward to using it.
Keep up the good work. You’ve inspired me.
You’re going to LOVE SILK All In ONe paint… it’s one of my faves as it’s a time saver. And if you try an airbrush – have fun Jeanne! XOXO
That dresser makeover is stunning! I love what you did. Thanks for sharing your talent.
Thank you Linda! So happy you like it!
Wow! Stunning, love this more modern look. I love these new cottage colors!
Thanks Vicki and I love them too! My painter friends did an awesome job at showing them all off!!! Good luck!
Wow!!! What a transformation. You always seem to see the diamond in the rough.
This time I totally missed the rough 😂… thanks so much Cindy!
Wow! This is a drop-dead gorgeous dresser now!! You took an ordinary house frock and turned it into a cocktail dress! You are a furniture fairy godmother.
Furniture Fairy Godmother… I LOVE IT Linda…lol. Thank so much and good luck to you!
Awesome flip!! So cool! Love the green and love their cucumber color also
Thanks Sue! I love this green as well! I wasn’t sure what I thought about the cucumber until I saw Kathy’s desk makeover (Petticoat Junktion link above!)… it’s a gorgeous color too!
Wow! What a transformation. Clearly whoever priced this piece probably didn’t see the damage either. 🤪 Thankfully you brought her home and fixed her up.
I think you’re right😂… they must not have seen it! Good luck Angelia!
I love the metallic gold subtlety. I’ve always wanted to try using an air brush but am a little intimidated. I usually have a heavy hand when it comes to paint so I believe it would take a lot of practice. This dresser’s make over is so wonderful though, especially after having to do such extensive repair on the dog “chewing”. The green is awesome and would go anywhere. Thanks again for sharing your talent.
Love this so much! I’ve always been a fan of gold on furniture.
I’ve dealt with many pieces that have been chewed on by teething puppies- it’s an experience!
Wow great save on the dog damage!! Love the green and gold combo.
The green and gold colors together look amazing…and I’m not typically drawn to green furniture. The airbrush idea for stenciling is brilliant. My husband gifted me an airbrush last Christmas and I was flabbergasted (I requested one 30 years ago). I already have an idea to transform my grandkids toy box . Thank you so much!!!
Outstanding job!
Thank you Ellen!
Love this color combination! Great way to save and upgrade this dresser.
Thank you Char!
I enjoy seeing all the makeovers! I’ve been hesitate about doing some of my own but you give me inspiration. Am learning a lot about the process. I do a lot of crafting but not furniture redos. Thank you!
Wow, beautiful job! I airbrush cookies but never thought to airbrush a stencil! Will give it a try!
This dresser is absolutely stunning, Denise! You are the best at fixing those destroyed pieces lol. XOXO
I can’t believe I missed that damage…lol. I wouldn’t have paid $70 for it…thats for sure!😂 Thanks my friend. XOXO
Not usually a fan of greens, but I love this dresser! Beautiful work!
Thanks so much Jan, huge compliment!💜
Oh my gosh! You are so talented. An inspiration to me!
Thank you Tracey! I had soooo much fun with my new paint color and airbrush! 🙂
Bravo, well done!
Thanks Jody! xo
This is a truly beautiful makeover. I love the gold accents on the drawers. Wow!
I had so much fun airbrushing them on! Thank you!
What a gorgeous piece now! I once painted a horse eaten chest, lol.
A horse eaten chest…lol…was there anything left to work on?!😂🤣🐴
What a great repair job and color choice. The knobs are perfect, too.
Thank you Jacy!
The dresser turned out so pretty! Love the English Ivy color…..
I’m a huge ‘green’ fan and I love this English Ivy too. Thanks Dotte!!
It turned out beautifully!
Thank you Marty!
Nice job. Hope to win the Paint!Thank you!
Thank you Joy… and good luck to you! Be sure to check back next Tuesday 🙂
Beautiful! And no you’re not the only one that misses stuff like that! I think I just get so excited about finding a great piece LOL! 😁
Right?!? Omgosh, I couldn’t believe it…lol. Glad I’m not the ONLY ONE!!!😂
I’m not normally a fan of green, but you’ve made me one with this makeover! I love it!
Awww, super sweet thanks so much Kathy! Good luck to you!
I really like the gold with the green. Great color choices!
Thank you Jenny! It’s always fun laying down a little ‘shine’. 😉
I love this!!! the print is perfect!
Fun, right?!? It was my first time using this stencil and i LOVE it!
Hi Denise. This dresser looks amazing. Looks brand new and so updated. I hear ya about missing seeing the dog bitten bottom. I once bought a dresser I THOUGHT was pristine, only to realize the drawers ins ALL had black mold!!!! Yuck,
Ohhh noooo! Been there done that too! Thanks so much Monique and good luck to you!
This turned out better than I thought as I read through the steps! It would be perfect in a sunroom with lots of plants!
Thanks Sherry… and YESSSS! This would look awesome in a sun/plant room!!!
I love that dresser! I never thought of using an air brush for stencils. You are so creative and talented.
Thanks Kellie! I’ve always wanted to try one and it was super fun! I can’t wait to try different colors and shading with it.
Great work on fixing the doggie damage ! I enjoy your blog, and you do amazing work!
Thank you Darlene! Good luck to you!
Not my thing but very nicely done!
Thank you Nathalie! 🙂
That is GORGEOUS!
YAY! Thank you Cyndi! xo
Love the way the dresser turned out and can’t wait to see your next project using the airbrush.
I’m not much for green but what you have done to this project is stunning.
Aw, thanks so much Colleen! I know green is kind of a love it or hate it color but I’m so happy you appreciate the work! Have a super day and good luck to you!
I can’t beleive you fixed the dog shews with bond, Brillant! It is so pretty now! I love the green mixed with the gold, tuned out amazing!
