TODAY I’M SHARING A METALLIC LAYERED DRESSER MAKEOVER ALONG WITH MY FAV RESOURCE TO THOUSANDS OF PAINTED FURNITURE IDEAS!
Hi, sweet #sifamily. I hope your week is off to a great start! Today I’m sharing a holiday-inspired metallic gold layered dresser before and after. I’m also including my favorite resource to thousands of Painted Furniture Ideas – aside from the #siblog of course! 😉
If you’re new to the #siblog, I’d like to personally invite you to join my Pinterest board with over 43K painted furniture ideas. It’s a group board with the most talented furniture artists in the industry pinning their creations. They generously share their before and afters, DIY ideas, and step by step tutorials. I’ll include the link at the bottom of this post so you can hop on over and take a peek at all the amazing artistry and DIY eye candy!
But first, I can’t wait to share today’s makeover with you.
I found this vintage dresser on Facebook Marketplace which has become my go-to for finding furniture — other than my curb-finds of course. hehe. It’s part of a vintage bedroom set. A vanity and bed are also included but they’re located at a separate pick up location about an hour and a half away. I’m hoping I’ll be able to grab the other two pieces this weekend so I can share them with you soon.
Don’t you love all this detail! Well worth the drive to get the other two pieces, don’t you think!
And here’s the after. I used a layered paint technique with red, black and gold metallic. Holiday inspired! What do you think?

METALLIC LAYERED DRESSER
I started by giving this piece a super good cleaning and then a light sanding. I didn’t use any primer or stain blocker because, with these dark colors, I wasn’t worried about bleedthrough. If you are working furniture that will bleedthrough, here’s a great resource.
Here’s what this dresser looked like in progress.
In the last pic, you may notice the hardware handles are MIA. Even though I used the original hardware and painted them while still on the piece, I removed them before I spray top coated. This ensures there are no drips or mess around the hardware and it’s a perfectly smooth topcoat finish.
I also tried something new with my painting technique. Rather than add the dark around the sides and outer drawers like you usually see, I darkened the middle of the drawers. I used Coffee Bean and this rich dark red. It reminds me of something I saw when touring Dundurn Castle years ago. It looks regal and old world. What do you think?
And these details. I just can’t get enough of them! This Metallic Gold really brought them to life while adding to this old world finish!
And check out these scrumptious layers!
Honestly, I just feel like putting a huge red bow around it because this dresser looks like an elegant gift!
A quick note on last week’s Dixie Belle Giveaway Winners. The $100 has been claimed but the two $50 packages were not. 🙁 This means TWO NEW WINNERS will be randomly picked so be sure to check your email and here on the #siblog!
LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK OF THIS HOLIDAY INSPIRED PAINTED DRESSER … OR FEEL FREE TO ASK ANY QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE… I ALWAYS LOVE HEARING FROM YOU.
Thanks for reading. 🙂
Wishing you a beautiful day filled with inspiration and Happy Painting friends!

When you spray on the sealer, do you just pour the sealer into a spray bottle and spray it on? Do you use a brush to even it out? Do you use any water in the spray bottle? I’ve never tried this method, but it sounds easier than sponging it on. Could you please tell me your way of doing this procedure. I just love the way you re-do furniture. You are an inspiration. Thank you
Denise says
Thank you, Amy! When I refer to spraying on my finishes, I use an actual spray gun/compressor. I received this Husky Paint Gun way back in 2013, and it still works amazing and gives a flawless finish.

I don’t know how I missed this hottie! I’m strolling around blog land looking for ideas to use on a chest and caught this one. It is so rich! You told about using the gold but I didn’t see at what point you applied it. Is is under a layer of paint or rubbed on?
Denise says
Hi Cecilia! The Gold Digger was dry brushed over the layered paint to make all those gorgeous details pop! 🙂
Katty Balle says

Thanks Lindsay! xo
Joanne H says
This dresser turned out beautiful.
How do you decide when to use metallic paint vs gilding wax?
Denise says
Thanks Joanne! With the metallic paint, I can actually layer it and include some color/paint over top. With the gilding wax, it’s always put on last. 🙂 Great question btw!! 🙂

Hi Denise. Although this dresser was pretty to begin with, you did it justice by richening the color and bringing out the intricacies with the gold highlights. Beautiful!!!! I can’t wait to see what you do with the matching vanity and bed:)
Denise says
Aw thanks, my friend! And I can’t wait to pick up the vanity and bed. Hopefully this weekend. x
Gloria says

Denise says
Hi Gloria! Yes, the layering technique is posted here. I also created a short video but haven’t had a chance to edit and upload it yet.

I have an old sticky type table from the 40s. My niece painted it. Now that I have i want to strip it n put back to its original beauty. The two strippers I’ve used aren’t working. Any suggestions for stripper products.
Denise says
Have you tried CitriStrip, Fran? I’ve also used Heirloom Heavy Duty Stripper. Super smelly but it’s strong and powerful. Also, a heat gun works to strip furniture too. All of them require safety measures though. Mask and good ventilation!!
SUE says
That’s beautiful! You did a great job Denise.
Denise says
Thanks you Sue!

AW, Barb thank YOU! XO
Kathy says
I love what you did to this dresser. The details are spectacular and the gold definitely brings them to life. I am amazed at how you painted this piece with the hardware on. That is a different technique to me. You always impress me with your creativity and ability to bring the beauty back in a piece.
Denise says
Thanks, Kathy! And I RARELY paint pieces with the hardware attached. I wanted to keep these original handles and have some gold peeking underneath so I figured that was the way to go. 🙂
Marie says
I noticed the darkened paint finish in the middle of the drawers rather than the edges right away! You know how much I love the layers of red and gold metallic. This dresser would look gorgeous in my home. 😢I wish we lived within driving distance.
Denise says
I wish we lived within driving distance too Marie!! For different reasons other than this dresser though…lol 😉 You’d be my partner in crime for furniture hunting, and Tim Horton coffee and donuts.🤣
Charlotte says
I love the dresser. It’s beautiful and I would love to have it in my house. Happy Thanksgiving.
Denise says
Happy Thanksgiving Charlotte! I forgot to wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving because we already had ours! Wishing you a beautiful day and week! XO
Shirley says
Oh My Goodness! Just one word for that dresser, GORGEOUS! The dresser itself is beautiful but the finish you chose changed it from beautiful to gorgeous. You came up with a winner, my friend.
Denise says
Thanks so much, Shirley! 🙂
Marcia says
What a knockout! Such a pretty piece of furniture to begin with, but I love the finish you did. You’re right – it looks like an elegant gift! Love it, Denise.
Denise says
Thanks, Marcia! If I had a bow big enough, I would have staged it with one! 😉
Laura B. says
Utterly and completely gorgeous Denise! This piece would look fabulous in anyone’s home
Denise says
Thank you, Laura! XO
